“Outstanding for business or leisure: much more than the wonderful views!”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

We stayed for 7 nights at The Cottage and were not disappointed in any way. The warmth of the welcome from Mrs Pattin (the owner) was great, and we were helpfully escorted to our room in the Pinnacles, the modern annexe to the hotel which is about 100 yards from the main building. Our labrador was made specially welcome with her own doggy-paws rug, bonios and bowl (and most thoughtfully poo-bags provided!). The room was large (room 23) with what proved to be a marvellous view when the mists/snow cleared by day 5!!! The ground floor rooms in the Pinnacles all have small patios with table and chairs which would be lovely when the weather is good. The Vi-Spring 6 foot bed was superbly comfortable, the shower was really powerful and the bath large enough for a good long soak. The rooms are all individually designed, no "one size fits all" here. The little touches that make this hotel special were the provision of binoculars in each front-facing room, and an "emergency kit" of all the things one might have forgotten or suddenly need. Brilliant!

Food was excellent - prepared by the Pattin's son, who is a master chef in his own right - modern British with a twist, plenty of it and always very freshly cooked, served on very hot plates! We particularly loved the seafood which is fresh daily and brought up from Brixham I believe. The wine list is quite amazing, I have never seen such an extensive one (more than 500 wines) and it made a really informative read. John (Pattin) is a real connoisseur and his love of the subject as well as joie de vivre really comes through.

All members of the team, whether family or not, were very motivated, seemed to be very happy in their work, and nothing was too much trouble for anyone so it made it a real pleasure to stay there for a prolonged stay.

We will certainly return to this gem, and when the weather lifted the views were indeed utterly magnificent!

Room Tip: It's well worth having a room with the view - and as large a room as you can afford if staying f...

Thank you for your detailed review. It's very helpful to me to have a report on a 7 night stay as the consistency of the operation is well and truly tested. I'm glad Sue made you welcome - she loves that side of the business - which leaves Dominic to do the cooking and me to look after the wine list. It is a bit of a passion. We are so lucky in this country to have such a vast selection of wines from all round the world to choose from. It's great to experiment and try things new. I'm sorry to read the early days of the week were misty/snowy but at least it did clear. Beds are as you say, Vi-Spring and they really are good. Not cheap but really good. Hope you will return one day. John

We arrived at reception to be greeted by a very pleasant and efficient young man who showed us to our room after a speedy check in. I had requested a room with a view as it was our wedding anniversary and we got our wish, the view from the first floor room ( room 7) was stunning as was the room itself. The furniture was old fashioned but in keeping with the style of the room, everything you could possibly need was provided for us, including an emerging box of sewing bits and ladies essentials, bottled water and ample tea/coffee/hot chocolate. It really felt like a home from home. The bathroom was lovely with a huge bath and power shower, and gorgeous toiletries provided.everything was spotlessly clean. We ate at the hotel restaurant on the first night and very much enjoyed our meal, I had the hake with curried mussels - yum! And the hubby had the venison which went down very well, but the highlight of the meal was the soup starter OMG who knew that beet root soup could taste so good. Hubby followed with the large cheese board which he thought was a little overpriced at £11.95. Breakfast was ample, my only gripe would be that it would be nice to have the option of vegetarian sausage. The service by the restaurant staff was faultless. It's a shame the weather turned and we never saw the view after our initial glimpse, but the gesture was appreciated and we still enjoyed a fabulous weekend at cottage in the woods. We hope to return sometime.

The weather is the only thing that I can't be held responsible for but I do feel apologetic if it doesn't behave as the views are spectacular as other guest have commented. Happy anniversary by the way - albeit a bit late. Delighted you enjoyed dinner. Dominic comes up with some very interesting soups and I'm glad the beetroot was enjoyed. Many thanks for taking the trouble to post a review. John

We stayed at the Cottage in the wood on Saturday the 9th of February, unfortunately the weather was dreadful, rain and mist all the time. The best views in England were not to be seen. The hotel however was great. lovely room, excellent food and pleasant staff. I would recommend it to anyone. We will be going back in the summer and hope for some better weather. Only one fault I could find was the dining room decor and furnishings, great for breakfast but not formal enough for dinner and it would be nice to have table cloths.

Oh dear, the view is beyond my control and about the only thing I can't be blamed for! You'll have to return. I can be blamed for no table cloths. We did this several years ago now as the trend is towards less formal eating. It suits some and not others. A vexed issue. Very glad that other aspects gave you a good stay. Many thanks for the feedback. We'll be waiting for your return with sunshine pre-ordered!

Beautifully situated on the edge of the Malvern Hills with fantastic views across the Severn Valley.
A friendly welcome from reception, excellent service and a relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant food is excellent. Well worth a visit just for the fabulous view.

I'm relieved you saw the view unlike the review above your! Not much I can do about the weather except apologise and issue picture of what it is usually like! Pleased to read you enjoyed the food too as I always think we have to offer very much more than just a view. Thank you for taking the time to post a review. John

We stayed here over night as we were booked in for a Range Rover experience nearby early the next day. We were warmly greeted by reception, and given a lovely room in the annex, a short walk from the main building. Everything was clean and tidy. Service was excellent, they couldn't do enough for you. We ate at the restaurant, which had a good choice of menu. Due to the prediction of heavy snow there were few people staying that night, but the owners had reduced the size of the restaurant so we didn't feel too lonely! The next morning they opened breakfast 15mins early for us as we needed to get away and the breakfast was superb, with both continental and full English. As a passing comment on our arrival at breakfast we mentioned how icy it was, and before the end of breakfast someone had been out and gritted the entire pathway! The views are brilliant and I only wish we had booked for more than one night to fully appreciate them. If we ever visit that part of the country again we wound certainly stay there again without any hesitation.

As it was a bit tricky with the ice in the morning I hope your Range Rover Experience was not too hairy! Clearing the drive is usually my task but Maria, my daughter was on hand for you. Delighted you enjoyed the food and service. Hope you will return if you are ever this way again. There's more to the area than Eastnor and the Range Rover course, however good that is. Many thanks for your review. John

Stunning views for thirty miles and large picture windows make this an unforgettable experience.

Very warm personal service and good food. Sunday lunch lacked the wow factor, not as great as other meals I have had there previously, which was a bit disappointing, but overall would go again for the pudding which was delicious!

2 of us and our dog had a lovely 2 night last minute break at this hotel. If you like walking it is in the perfect location, on the hillside of the Malverns. Staff were very friendly there and it is a very relaxed atmosphere. Our room was lovely - very big and comfortable with a little patio area - the view was outstanding - overlooking the plain below. The footpaths of the Malvern Hills are footsteps away so really great for walks. We went into Malvern one evening and had a great night out there - it is about a 5mins drive. All in all a fantastic little hotel that we would love to return to (and have recommended to our friends!).

Thank you for recommending us to friends and for the review. It's a great location for views and walks on the Hills. Each season is different and the light reflects of different aspects of the valley below. Even now, after 25 years my eye can be caught by something I hadn't noticed before. Good for woodland bird species too. John
