“A Great Way to Spend a Relaxing Weekend”
Reviewed March 23, 2012

I went the The Vale Resort on a Golfbreaks.com stay as part of a golf society of around 30. When we arrived we were immediately surprised to see a lot of the Welsh Rugby squad milling about after their Grand Slam success the day before. Many looked like they hadn't been to bed, which was probably understandable! The location of the hotel is pretty good around 5mins off J34 of the M4, however be warned the nearest town/shop is a fair walk.

We played the Lakes course on the Sunday and thought the course was in good condition considering it is out of season. There are some really challenging holes and a good amount of water to deal with which makes you think alot about your game. The only thing that did let it down was certain parts were very wet underfoot which was unexpected considering the good weather we had.
We then played the Welsh National on the Monday and whilst there is a lot less water in play than the Lakes, the water is more in play off the tee, so it is definitley a challenge for a high handicapper like myself. The par 5 second is a challenge (apparently the longest par 5 in Wales!) and the stretch of 13, 14 and 15 is definitely very tricky.

The rooms were spacious and had a particulary large bathroom. The beds were comfy and the room bright and airy. (We stayed in 002) The only downside was the batteries in the TV remote did not work and a lightbulb needing changing (very minor things)

The bar area was bright and drinks were not too pricey considering where we were. Pint of Carling £3.50 and Vodka and Coke £2.90. The biggest disappointment of the wekeend was the service and portions for the evening meal. For the eveing meal we had budget of £29 to spend off their normal menu on what we wanted. I went for the Sweet Potato and Onion Soup and the Pan Fried Monkfish. Both were very tasty and well cooked, however the portions could have been a lot more substanial. For example no breadroll was served with the soup and a limited amount vegetables was served with the monkfish. Which considering the monkfish would have been £16.95 to order on its own seemed a bit excessive. Most of the group had the steak and be warned whilst it was cooked well, it was served with 6 chips, some tomatoes on the vine and a handful of salad garnish. Considering many had not had any lunch this was not welcomed and did not go down great with the group. The other downside was it took around 1 and a half hours to serve of group which seemed very excessive, especially considering the restaurant was very quiet. Personally a set menu with 3 choice of starters, mains and desserts would have made sense and probably meant a quicker, mor emanagble service for their staff to deal with. Having been on similar breaks to the St.Pierre, The Belfry and The Forest of Arden, this was definitely the most disappointing in terms of the food on offer for the evening meal.
However when we came down to breakfast in the morning the choice was varied, (English or Continental choices) and the buffet style service meant there was no long wait. In particular the sausages and mushrooms were delicious. Also a great view over the 9th and 10th on the Lakes course.

I also used the extensive Gym facilities and the Swimming Pool, Sauna, Steam Room and Jacuzzi. All were a great way to relax and unwind. The gym was very impressive and you can definitely see why the Welsh rugby team use the hotel as a base for when they play at home. The Jacuzzi and Sauna were a delight, however I would say the swimming pool was a little cold and we did feel something might have be wrong with the temperature/heating.

Overall great value for money at £99 for the stay, however a few very minor things which meant it did not quite get the 5* rating.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the golf course

!2 old golfers spent two nights at the hotel . It's better than heaven. The service is impecable the staff friendly and the golf courses a real challenge . I put in a request for good weather and they even organised sunshine every day and that takes some doing in March in Wales.

The food from breakfast snacks and evening meals was superb . As organiser I had a room with a balcony overlooking the golf courses . My friends were vey envious and volunteered to organise next years trip back to the Vale No chance.

The facilities at the hotel are 5 star

however can't complain about the price we paid, at only £29 each for a room and breakfast on a special February deal.

The Vale Resort is situated just 5 mins. off Junction 34 of M4 so great if your staying around the Cardiff area.Having a car is a must if you stay here as it isn't situated in a village although there's plenty of lovely scenery and country lanes around for walking.

Staff overall were polite and friendly. The room was fine - clean and tidy with a great bathroom which had a separate shower too. There could be some improvements though, such as bathrobes in the rooms, there was no facecloth/flannel provided, there was only one very small bottle of bath gel and shampoo (no hair conditioner either).

The other thing we noticed was that there was just a fitted sheet over the matress, most hotels today also have an undersheet/matress protector on the bed.

There was no mini-bar in the room. The TV had the basic terrestrial channels only.

I used the health club - the pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi which was enjoyable, there's also a well-equipped gym. It was quiet when I was there but I would imagine it gets busy on weekends etc, as it attracts a lot of local membership. The beauty treatments are quite expensive and the Spa charges hotel guests to use its Relaxation Lounge about £20-30(i.e. if you're not having any treatments). As I was a hotel guest, the health club receptionist gave me a towel and the lockers take £1 coin.

We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant as the reviews weren't particularly good, so we drove about 2 miles the small village of Pendoylan to a newly renovated pub called The Red Lion for dinner.

Service at breakfast was a bit slow although the restaurant wasn't particularly busy - self-service style full welsh breakfast with eggs cooked to order - no complaints. The fruit on offer was a bit disappointing - tinned oranges and grapefruit and empty bowls on display which should have been replenished.

Highlight of the morning was seing the Welsh rugby team in reception before we left - they were on their way up to Twickenham to beat the English!! No problem as it turned out!!

Spent the weekend here as a birthday treat from my partner. We stayed in a lovely room overlooking the golf course; the room was a good size with a very comfortable bed and a spacious bathroom with a wonderful shower. We used the spa in the afternoon and the staff were very friendly and polite; we enjoyed a full body swedish massage in one of their double treatment rooms which was heavenly and reasonably priced. We were then able to spend the next hour relaxing in the various chill-out rooms which were exactly that - chilled out, quiet and perfect for relaxing with non-intrusive staff.

We ate in the Grill restaurant both evenings and the food was superb - well presented and absolutely delicious. I can certainly recommend the twice cooked chips! There was a good choice on the menu to suit all tastes and the service was excellent. The restaurant itself could do with a little more ambience as it is a very open space and some of the tables for two are very close together, not particularly conducive for a cosy dinner for two; however, the benefit of such a large space is that the kitchen is open to the restaurant so you can see the staff preparing your food, which I think is always a positive thing. The Salamanza bar was nice to sit in for an after-dinner drink, but again, it could do with a little more ambience and less harsh spotlights!
Breakfast both mornings was plentiful and very tasty and service for any extras (poached eggs etc) was very prompt.
All in all, a lovely place to go for a couples weekend, a ladies weekend in the spa, or even a family weekend as the resort was laid back and appeared very family friendly.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a balcony overlooking the golf course - beautiful views to appreciate with a...

We stayed the first week of February for one night. The room was clean, with a very comfy bed and a nice bathroom. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food in the Grill was delicious, the service was quick and easy. The bar prices are a bit steep, over £4 for a pint of lager but you'd expect this with no other pubs nearby. Would stay again, maybe with a round of golf next time!
