The cottage was fantastic. Exceptionally clean and lovely decor. On 3 levels and extremely spacious. There were 8 of us in our party and plenty of room and seating for everyone to sit in the lounge and at the big table in the kitchen. Beds were made up and towels were provided. Had everything you could need including a dishwasher, washing machine and microwave. The back garden was beautifully kept and there was garden furniture for sitting outside. It was a very peaceful location and wonderful on a sunny day. The front door was on the 2nd level and just a few seconds walk to the left was the local shop and a chip shop with restaurant. There was also a couple of pubs with restaurants a minutes walk to the right. Everything was on hand. It was in an ideal location and Helmsdale is a beautiful place. There was parking at the back of the cottage which would probably be enough for 2 cars and there was also a car park located very near the rear of the cottage. There were also streets that you could park on at the front of the cottage which were a little busier.
There are only two things that we would recommend for improvement and that is to have WIFI and also install an electric shower in the main bathroom or improve the tank capacity and system for heating the water. We followed the instructions given to heat the water but there was barely enough for 2 short showers despite having it set to timer and boosting and we had to keep putting it on boost and waiting for the water to heat up for 40 minutes. With 8 of us it took forever to heat for all of us to have showers and some of us ended up with the shower turning cold. The current system would probably be enough for the en suite but is not enough for the main bathroom as well when there is a large party.
Nevertheless, we had a great stay and would highly recommend the cottage.
The hosts were very approachable and quick to reply to any inquiries and made sure we had all directions and info well before our travels. The house is clean, on three levels. The beds comfy. The kitchen is well equiped. Plenty of parking around on the street (or a single vehicle in backyard). The patio and backyard very nice on a sunny day. The dishwasher in the kitchen was very useful. An extra toilet/powder room would be much appreciated, especially if the party staying are all strangers, not a family. Otherwise place has one shared bathroom and ensuite with shower in one bedroom. The welcome cake and tea left in the kitchen by the hosts, were very much appreciated by our group. Thank you Susan and Martin!
It is a verry good place stay.
From this place we visited the northern region and coast. We went to Fornisard and Dunnet Head to do some birding.
We had the best stay at Birch Cottage. Susan has thought of everything and has created a cosy and inviting space. I feel the photos don't do it justice as there is so much quirkiness and character about the house. We were delighted to see how spacious it was as we were a party of 8. If you are planning a trip to Helmsdale, this is the place to stay. We hope to return one day.
Really lovely place to stay. From the main street ( Dunrobin Street ) the cottage looks small, but don't be deceived. It is large, beautifully decorated, comfy and full of character. Everything has been thought of to make sure that your stay is enjoyable - fresh milk waiting in the fridge to logs for the fire. Wish our stay there had been longer. We'll definitely return.
We had 3 adults, 1 teenager and 3 young children in our party and the accommodation was brilliant. Lots of extras, that you sometimes have to go out and buy. Helmsdale is a pretty village with a station, which is handy for Dunrobin castle etc. Beachcombing was a great adventure for the family. I would recommend this lovely cottage.
My husband and I arrived with my 3 children aged 12, 10 and 8 to find cake and tea left for us and ice lollies for the kids. The house itself I was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Lovely clean sheets and fluffy towels. Both bathrooms had a generous supply of toilet rolls and hand soap. The kitchen supplied with cloths, washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets. The garden was in full bloom when we arrived and a lovely place to sit out on the decking. The garden was completely enclosed and perfect for the kids to kick about in. We were even able to park our car (carefully) in the garden which made unpacking very easy. The road in front of the house is difficult to park on and has a fair amount of traffic on it but not enough that you are disturbed by it. Susan left the shed unlocked for us so that we could store our outdoor equipment and we purchased a padlock from the hardware shop opposite the front door.
The only slight issue we had was no wifi as we have become so accustomed to looking everything up on the Internet. However 'Timespan' and 'Thyme & Plaice' both have provide free wifi for their customers.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Birch Cottage and would happily return.
