Owner description: Timespan is a cultural centre that contains a museum telling a story from the harbour to the hills. It has the only contemporary art gallery in the county which has six exhibitions a year which follow the organisations annual themes. The archive contains more than eleven thousand items donated by the local community and contains genealogy information of many of the local families. The River Cafe offers home baking and light lunches with some outdoor seating by the river enabling you to watch the wildlife close up. The gift shop has a wide variety from childrens' toys to local pottery.

We stopped off here on our way back to Dornoch from John O' Groats. It was an interesting museum about the Highland Clearances. The light was flickering, which we were told was a temporary fault, but I notice someone mentioned this fault back in June, so maybe it needs fixing.

The cafe had home made cakes and a pleasant outside area next to the river.

Good venue for researching local Scottish ancestry. Our interest was in The Clearances. We found staff friendly and helpful. We were loaned a cell phone containing an app for a self-guided tour through the former farming settlement. During our visit they were involved in an archaeological exploration of an over-200-year-old long house. There is a small but growing museum that offers additional information on the history of the area. Pleasant on-site cafeteria. Small open area gift shop.

Thank you for sharing your experience of visiting Timespan. We're very glad that you enjoyed the time you spent here. The Clearances are an interesting part of Scottish history and hopefully our Clearances Trail App gave you a greater insight into their effect on the Strath of Kildonan. The excavation of the Clearances era longhouse that was happening while you were visiting is now finished and we're working on archiving the finds and putting them on display in the museum and on our website.

Small museum with interactive displays. Summary information that really sketches over so many aspects - social, geology, history etc. Faulty lighting means you can hardly see many of the displays. Not really worth the entrance money. Small garden

Popped in for a coffee and cake stop on the way to Thurso on a cycling trip. Didn't have time for the museum which is a shame but the coffee shop was great - a recommended stop off for cyclists. The staff were caring and attentive and the choice was good. The cake was fabulous plus we received some free biscuits for energy. Must go back and do the museum one day with the family.
