In the past fortnight I've been to the Tilly twice - one meal was superb but the other, I'm sorry to say, was disappointingly mediocre. On the first occasion, I had a sit-down meal in the restaurant. The staff were friendly and efficient without being fawning and irritating (a pet hate). The tandoori starter was among the best I've had anywhere. Delicious, succulent chicken and tangy lamb served with lovely chilli sauce. Mouthwatering. My main course, chicken tikka achari, was nice and tangy, although it was a shade too hot. This was my fault as I had ordered it spicy out of habit. This was rounded off by a lovely fresh naan and vegetable pilau. Both flawless. As a result of this good experience I went to the Tilly for a takeaway last night. Oh dear, big disappointment. Slow service. Bland, oily chicken rogan josh, rubbery naan and overcooked rice. Only the tandoori starter came close to the original meal.
I've given a four-star review on the strength of one good experience. I'll visit again to see if the Tilly deserves the benefit of the doubt. I can only hope my insipid takeaway was the exeception.
