“Just lovely”
Reviewed June 21, 2013

We stayed in lodge 47 and thought it was just lovely. The 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (1with a sauna) are downstairs and the conservatory, living area and kitchen diner are upstairs ( with a separate wc). Very well equipped and furnished, definitely a wow factor when we walked into the upstairs area with the view of the loch at the far end. Very comfortable beds too ! We love this place for its tranquility, amazing views of the loch and mountains. Definitely will come back again.

Another wonderful week at the Loch Rannoch Highland Club. The Lodge was, as usual, well equipped and maintained... spotlessly clean. Waking up to the view of Loch Rannoch and the mountain, Schiehallion, every morning never ceases to be exciting. The walking in the surrounding hills is fantastic with a number of well defined paths for walkers of all abilities and full local information is supplied by the club. The local towns of Pitlochry and Aberfeldy are both small but have a wealth of good shops. Pitlochry has a great theatre and the Aberfeldy cinema has just been refurbished. The club staff are unfailingly helpful and the grocery delivery service from the local shop is a great help, especially when arriving fairly late. I'd recommend the club to anyone (and have!)

We have had three wonderful weeks here in Red Squirrel. We love the peace and quiet. The units are very well equipped and all staff are friendly and helpful. Aberfeldy and Pitlochry are the nearest large towns, about 20 miles away. However the village shop is very well stocked with most food items you will need. We would also like to recommend the Bridge of Gaur Guest House for an evening meal. Excellent food, good value, lovely surroundings and Heather and Eddie are wonderful hosts. Sue Mildon is a local therapist and I can highly recommend her for massage, Reiki and reflexology. Being a massage therapist myself it is a real bonus to find someone locally to give me some tlc when I am on holiday.

We've just returned from a wonderful week staying at the Loch Rannoch Highland club, which has to be said has the most stunning views over the Loch of anywhere we have stayed in Scotland. We stayed in an apartment type lodge which is fine for couples. The accommodation is clean and comfortable but the decor is just a little bit "1980's" style and could do with a tad of updating.
The location is definitely off the beaten track but ideal for walking and touring the highland lochs.
We got up to Loch Ness (by car) and Malliag (via the train from Rannoch Station) as well as Pitlochry and Blair Caslte.

Room Tip: Any apartment or Lodge gives you the stunning view, but if you can get a higher room your bound to g...

We have been going here for several years now and so look forward to it every year. Views are to die for and the lodges are great with everything you need. Don't expect all round entertainment on site, this is a remote beautiful area with gorgeous scenery and walks. There is so much to see and do though and even after many years, we still find new things to see.
You must go to Rannoch Station & get the train for a day out, or explore the local climbs to Scheihallion or Ben Lawers.
It is not far to Tummel Valley where there is swimming for the kids & daily /evening entertainment. They also have great take away fish & chips!

Having recently returned from Loch Rannoch following our first every visit to Scotland, we have to say the location of Loch Rannoch is stunning and very relaxing location. It is ideal place to stay if you want to get away from it all and enjoy peace and quiet in a remote location. We stayed in Red Squirrel 3 and found the lodge to be very well equiped and comfortable, infact we could not have asked for more and found it to be a very pleasant surprise. We were able to take our two labs along with us who throughly enjoyed their week. A word of caution, if you are taking dogs along you will need to consider which areas you wish to explore for walking as there are a few surprises with the types of terrain you may come across which can be a bit of a headache for trying to walk dogs. It would be nice to be given a suggested dog walk map of the Loch with in the arrival pack especially as there is no dedicated dog exercise area on the complex or in the immedate area. We did fell that unless you were familar with the area information was sometimes hard to come by. When you are trying to get away and have a peaceful holiday you don't always want to keep phoning up the estate office to ask directions etc. This is not meant to be a negative remark against the club and we must say all the staff were wonderful, very helpful and friendly at all times. It is just our observation and opinion and we appreciate how hard they all work at Higlands Club to make everyone's enjoyable. You can purchase a certain amount information from the village shop. The local store is very well stocked and reasonable in price again with very friendly staff. With regards to the facilties outside the lodges, the scenery is stunning no matter what the weather. Because of the location is would be wise to consider an online order to be home delivered from either Tesco or Asda for your main buck supplies if you are not stopping on routine to stock up.

Down points: The area is very remote and it would appear many of the local businesses have closed which is sad for the local people as well as the visitors. If takes away the chance to enjoy the real character of the area and if you are travelling alone there is not any facility within the complex to meet your fellow neighbours and socialise. There was no local pub in the village at the time we were there as it is currently up for sale. This was a shame as we enjoy an evening stroll with our dogs to a local pub for a drink and the chance to get to meet the locals and enjoy a chat about the area when we are away. This also applies to eating out you had to be prepared to drive a 12 plus mile distance if you wanted to eat out and enjoy the local produce. You can of course use the bar and restaurant at the MacDonald hotel which is located between the lodges but they do not allow dogs and as dogs are not allowed to be left allow in the lodges it makes life a bit difficult if you did fancy an evening out and forced you to have to shut the dogs in your car to comply with the club rules. Also after now having a grown up famly, we did not feel it was an area best suited to families with young children, as there was nothing close by for them to go to do. There was no where on the complex you could let children out to run around, ride a bike or play ball. You are very much reliant on travelling out and about for this type of facilites or walking the 1/2 mile to the village park.
There is no immediate footpath around the Loch, the only footpath is from the start of the complex back to the village which is very good but very limiting.
Plus side again:
We did do varies trips out and about including the train ride to Malaig which were all very enjoyable and there is plenty of information in the lodges regarding places to visit if you did want to shop or visit the attractions.
In conclusion Loch Rannoch Highland Club is a lovely place to visit and stay and in time hopefully the village will redevelop to support it's local community and tourist trade. You do need to research the area before going but don't let this put you off as the lodges are wonderful as it the stunning location just remember it is very remote and plan accordinly and you to will have a wonderful time.

Room Tip: Red Squirrel 3 is located towards the far end of the of the complex and over looks the Loch. The vi...

We had a wedding to attend some 20 miles away in Blair Athol and were looking for accommodation for myself, my wife and my elderly mother for the bank holiday weekend. This was proving hard and then we saw this resort via Dial an Exchange. The staff we came into contact with were very friendly and the ladies in reception were fantastic in trying to ensure that the apartment was suitable for us and re-allocated us to a more suitable apartment....my wife being unable to manage more than a very few steps.
We stayed in Red Squirrel 5, a 2 bed/2 bath apartment with the expected views over the loch from the "conservatory. It was clean and very comfortable and fully equipped. We were out during the day and were happy to relax in the apartment in the evenings so the lack of a bar etc was of no real concern.....the multitude of birds, sheep, and the resident pheasant were an added bonus.
We felt that the apartment, whilst clean and comfortable, was in need of refurbishment and possibly the electric panel heaters upgrading with timer controls fitting.
My mother was forever leaving lights on and the heaters in her bedroom and the lounge and bathrooms were on more or less constantly so we were pleasantly surprised that the electricity charge was under £40. The cost of the apartment and electricity totalled about £290 for the week which is an absolute bargain for the spacious well equipped apartment.
If you want a lovely quiet comfortable break then this is the place. If you want the nightly bingo etc then you are better going elsewhere.
Our thanks to the staff for a most enjoyable break.
