“The best MacDonald Hotel we've stayed in”
Reviewed July 31, 2009

We stayed for one night, while en route to Harrogate. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, from check-in onwards. We had a room in the more modern Woodlands Suite, but it was ideal. Great bathroom, with a seperate shower and double washbasins. A nice touch was the illuminated magnifying mirror - despite the scary view - very handy for contact lenses, make up etc.!
We can't wait to go back again.
It was the total opposite experience from our visit to the MacDonald Marine Hotel at North Berwick, where the staff were indifferent and unwelcoming.

we stayed here for two nights B&B, having booked using our tesco club card vouchers.therefore it cost us nothing! great value. stayed inthe now famous room 230, which whilst tired was homely and welcoming with a large and comfortable bed.
did not eat in the main restarount for dinner, but the menu in thelibrary bar suited us.
staff the most genuinley welcoming we have known & the hotel is well placed for whitby and the moors, would happily return.

Stayed for weekend on DB&B basis and excellent value. Large room in annex although a room in the original hotel would be interesting. Staff really good and could not have been more helpful - especially Rory in restaurant. Dinner was 3 courses off the mun menu - no restricted menu because of special rate and quality of food as good as I have tasted in many many restaurants.
Wine and drinks cost a little more than expected but quality of hotel an food far outweighs this.
Will certainly return - good location with plenty of places to visit

I don't usually stay in this sort of hotel, so the five night 'walkers'package was a real treat.
The Woodland wing was quiet and staff were British, well trained and pleasant. What a change! There was a delicious breakfast array - best meal of the day. Drinks in the bar and bottle of wine atrociously expensive. Lots of things going on apart from weddings, such as High School Prom nights, but well organised and didn't disturb at all.
I liked the fact that the hotel provided few services such as saunas/pool etc. The countryside is so beautiful in this part of the world. All it takes is a gentle stroll. We will be back.

We have stayed at this hotel about 5/6 times now since it opened about 7 years ago. We celebrated our Ruby Wedding there 2 years ago and my 60th birthday last year.
This is a wonderful old building with the feel of a large Country House, lots of large squashy sofas and chairs and an open fire in winter. There`s a lovely library too if you want more peace and quiet. Outside is a large, stone flagged terrace which is great to have a pre-dinner drink on as we did, as the weather was wonderful. There are beautiful spacious gardens with a fountain and views over the hills where sheep graze.
We always ask for a room in the main house although a friend has stayed in the annexe and says the rooms there are good too. All the rooms have a name written on the door and are individually designed and furnished. This last time we stayed in 224. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable with high quality furnishings, lovely bathroom, tea tray with mineral water etc.

The staff are all excellent and have been each time we`ve stayed. They call you by name and when my friend stayed and mentioned it was her husband`s birthday, they produced a birthday cake at dinner!

The receptionists are friendly and welcoming and the dining room staff are spot on.

Dinner is very good with lots of choice as is breakfast, wonderful selection and plenty of hot dishes too including Whitby kippers!

This is definitely a haven amongst hotels. The surrounding area is beautiful too. We usually call at Stokesley, a small market town, on the way there and it is only about 20 miles to Whitby which is a great day out. This time we also visited Staithes and Goathland (where Hearbeat is filmed) as we are great Heartbeat fans!

Guisborough itself is a lovely little town and only about 15 mins walk from Gisborough Hall.

I could definitely recommend staying at Gisborough Hall. I can`t wait for our next visit!

During the peak wedding season, with weddings taking place in the newer wing of the hotel on both days of our visit, we were glad our room was in the old part of the hotel, therefore well away from the party. Room was fabulous, dinner truly superb, staff throughout the hotel were pleasant, friendly, efficient, and helpful. We have stayed in many hotels in the UK and overseas, and Guisborough Hall is high on the list of memorable hotel experiences. We would certainly stay there again.

Room we were allocated was well appointed but had a view only of the air-conditioning unit in the middle of the hotel, and it made noise all night - which meant we had to keep the windows closed even though it was hot. (avoid Madeline's room!) Couldn't change room as hotel was full with a wedding. (lots of weddings at this place - luckily it's all kept away in an annex so it doesn't tend to annoy too much)

Hotel was nice though and staff friendly and helpful (all locals or Brits, unusual these days, in MacDonald hotels anyway!).
Dinner in Tocketts restaurant was mediocre for the price. Had some food in the library bar next day, much better value.
Not much in the way of facilities - Their 'Spa' is basically just a pay for a beauty treatment in a room type of job - no sauna or steam room or the like....
