The location of this hotel is ideal if you don't like staying in the center of a busy place like Middlesborough. There is a lovely walk around a stream with wild ducks and pretty houses. We also found a couple of nice pub-restaurants nearby which served better fod than the hotel restaurant. Athough the hotel restaurant food was nothing special and a bit overpriced, the breakfast was excellent. Staff was always around to take an order or look after the guests.
The rooms are a little bit plain and needs upgrading maybe to a more modern decor, but the beds were comfortable and very clean. The toiletries are a good brand and I didn't mind using them for a change. The kettle and TV needs upgrading as well. The hotel offers broadband connection for the rooms and a password is available for wifi at the bar-restaurant. Overall, this is a comfortable hotel which is good value for money and I wouldn't mind staying here again.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on an upper floor, otherwise you will hear the noise from the room above you.

This was a welcome stop as part of a cross country bike ride. The reception was very helpful booking in our our party and sorting out secure storage for our bikes. The rooms were clean and spacious if not a little tired (the battrooms had been refurbed). The facilities were not great though - poor TV etc.
The food was good however - evening meal in the bar enjoyed by everyone and breakfast was excellent.
Overall this is an ok hotel that is in need of a facelift but not a bad place to rest your aching bones.

We a comfortable stay had the Wainstones. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was good. The rooms were a little dated and more attention could have been made to the plumbing maintenance in the rooms. The shower in our room was no more than a weak spray. Another couple in our party said they had to remove the top off the toilet cistern to allow them to flush it.

As part of my Coast to Coast walk booked by Macs Adventure, the internet photo of this hotel looked lovely and so I was very much looking forward to this place. It is several miles from the Walk but hotel offer to fetch C2C walkers from Clay Bank and return them in the morning. This they did most efficiently. Not so efficient was the check in. It is carpetted from the front door and I had to take my boots off outside. There was nobody in Reception and I had to go looking for someone. When I found someone they told me to wait a few minutes, which ended up being ten, just hanging about in the Reception like a spare part, wet and cold from a rainy days' walking. Once allocated a room it was left to me to find it, through a series of rather dreary corridors and fire doors. The room itself was large but very bland and unappealling, and the ensuite looking rather dated. After I'd settled in I attempted to retrace my steps through the corridors to Reception but somehow took a wrong turning and found myself in an empty function room, where I was spoken to with curt dismissiveness by a member of staff when I asked for directions to the bar. A friend also booked in to walk with me the next day, and we ate in the hotel. The bar/restaurant felt way too brightly lit. The food was overpriced and unexceptional. In summary, whilst this hotel is useful in being one of the few places to stay on this part of the C2C, and whilst the owners kindly provide transportation to and from, it was for me rather disappointing, and the hotel itself is not geared up for wet hikers arriving, or for helping them dry out boots and clothes.

Turned up here tired, covered in mud and dripping wet after a day's walking and were made to feel very welcome. Hadn't booked so were relieved they had one room left. We had planned to camp so in some ways any room would have been good, however the staff were really helpful and friendly, the bathroom was huge, there was loads of hot water and towels, the room was clean, tea and coffee were available, and the food in the restaurant was excellent. We particularly appreciated the newspaper with which to stuff our boots, the free wifi service, the phone numbers of possible places to stay on the next stage of our walk and the lift to our starting point the next morning.

We stayed at Wainstones Hotel recently when walking the C2C. After walking 14miles we opted for the hotels pickup service from the track to the hotel to save us walking 2-3 miles off track. Within minutes of contacting them someone arrive to collect us and deliver us to the hotel for our overnight stay. Our room was comfortable and clean and having a bath was a real bonus. The hotel's earlybird menu was a real bonus with a good menu at a very cheap price. The staff at the hotel were very helpful and went our of their way to make a stay a comfortable one. After a peaceful night sleep and a hearty breakfast we were back in the car with a great packed lunch (organised by the hotel) and driven back to the track where we were collected the previous day to continue our walk. Couldn't have been happier with our stay and the service we received from the staff at the Wainstones Hotel. 10 out of 10 guys!

The staff were very nice, but everything else about this hotel was average - nothing special, just average. They coordinated pick-up and drop-off for walkers very well, but didn't offer any drying services, and the rooms were marginal at best. The bathroom was very cheaply decorated, and while the lino was clean, the walls were plastic bowing at the screwed-in seams, and the shower head was black with grime. Beds were average, and the kettle looked really disgusting inside, so we didn't use it to even boil water.

The restaurant, however, was very nice and they plugged in a laptop with internet service in the corner of it for us to connect. The food was delicious and reasonably priced, and the breakfast the next morning was served by very lovely people (as was dinner the night before). David, the manager, is very accommodating, but the hotel itself is in dire need of updating. They really do try to please, however, customer service-wise, which is much appreciated. With some updating, this hotel could be a star.
