“Loved its quirkiness.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2013

Just got home after a two night stay and have to say loved the place, the décor is quirky and really works. Everyone was really friendly and welcoming and the room (I had one with a four poster bed) was great. I would definitely stay here again.

Stayed over August 25th bank holiday weekend 2013 and can honestly say how me and my partner enjoyed our stay. The friendly and accommodating landlady and landlord were brilliant. Rooms are kept to a high standard and breakfast was top notch. Definitely going back next time I'm up that way.

We stayed here for one night last week and we couldn't have been more pleased. Jude is a very welcoming and friendly host and we were made to feel right at home as soon as we arrived. The family room was very comfortable and extremely clean and the bathroom was gorgeous! Unfortunately the bar and restaurant were closed when we stayed there, but Jude was very accommodating and gave us directions to several places to eat in the local area. As we had a cranky 4 year old with us we asked if we could eat some snacks in the room - Jude even gave us plates, cutlery, wine glasses and napkins! The breakfast was lovely and the amazing array of ornaments, mirrors and decorative features (including a suit of armour!) displayed around the whole building added a sense of adventure for our children and added immeasurably to the joy of our Scottish travels. The next day we realised our son had lost his Edinburgh castle 'squashed penny' but to our delight, Jude had found this whilst cleaning the room and it arrived in the post a few days later. Above and beyond the call of duty - a perfect example of why this place was such a find. We would return anytime we were in the area :)

Tucked away in a resedential area, The Retreat Castle is a little surprise and a lot of fun. There are bits and bobs everywhere you look; nostalgic, olde-wolde and quirky. The rooms were huge and despite the age of the place, have been kept very well. The hostess, Jude, was incredibly welcoming, helpful, hospitable and very down-to-earth. There was a bus stop about a minute's walk away where the 31 into the heart of Edinburgh stops by a few times every hour. Great little stay.

We loved our stay at the Retreat, it was by far the best of our B&B's that we stayed at for our Scotland trip. Our room was HUGE, with a lovely 4-poster bed. The value for money was excellent, as was the breakfast :) Jude was lovely, made us feel very welcome and showed a genuine interest in our daily activities. Lovely place, will definitely be there again on our next Scotland trip.
P.S. - loved being greeted everyday by Scruff the Westie!!!

Room Tip: Room 6 is excellent!!

We recently stayed at the Retreat when attending the Open. The stay could have not been better. Jude was very welcoming and helpful. The room one of the smallest they have was comfortable with a nice bathroom. The Scottish breakfast was good and wholesome. We will stay again when in the area and recommend to our friends.

We went there with my parents and our room was upgraded to a four-poster bed room. We felt a little bit bad because our room was amazing and my parents' room was very small and average. I would definitely suggest going for one of the big ones (I know rooms 6 and 7 are big). Like others said, the hosts and great and the place is really something special. The breakfast was lovely and we had a relaxing time there. We were fairly near to Glenkinchie Distillery and Rosslyn Chapel, which we were visiting that day.
