i got married here on the 3rd of May, it was perfect. We had the bridal suite which i used to get ready in, it was lovely, and great for pre wedding photos in the bay window seats. The wedding was planned and organised by the master of ceremonies which gave structure to the day. The ceremony room was beautiful, i didn't even need flowers as the room had so much character. Afterwards, the bar area was a lovely place to have drinks, and the grounds are a beautiful setting for photos. We had a sit down meal for 50 and the food was delicious, the table linens and cutlery were gleaming, and the staff had lit all of the candles in my centre pieces before we all went in. The evening buffet food was fresh, plentiful and displayed nicely. The resident D.J provided a great atmosphere and the dancing continued until midnight. Those who wanted to chat took advantage of the comfy leather sofa area in the bar. Yes this hotel is old and shabby in places, but that is why i chose it, my Irish visitors were thrilled with this old English hotel. I know this hotel hosts many weddings, but i can honestly say we were made to feel special, i will certainly return for our anniversary.

On Saturday 5th may we attended an evening wedding reception. on arrival we were allocated our room in the mews, this was shabby and dated looking but the bedding was clean, was very put off by the hair in the bath, and the last guests rubbish in the peddle bin [ a lack of good house keeping ] i later found the pillows so very hard that i was unable to sleep on them. we joined the other guest in the main building only to find that the bride had been in tears over the lack of organization by the staff and management. the, OH WELL WE CANT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT NOW, attitude from the staff was outrages. As the evening went on i became more disappointed, the staff which were very few, looked like they just didn't care, as tomorrow they will be doing this all over again. the following morning at breakfast after waiting 20 Min's and having to asked twice for some toast ,it arrived. it was not worth the wait !
I believe a vast lack of investment, lack of good leadership skills, poor housekeeping ,and a dont give a dam attitude from staff is this hotels downfall.
On leaving the hotel the next day the next wedding party was arriving, my heart went out to them.
This is not the hotel that gives quality service and high standards.

We booked our table for 12.30 on 29th April 2012 for a family do to celebrate my parents Ruby Wedding Anniversary (they had their reception at this hotel 40 years ago).

We were kept waiting for 30 minutes while they got the table ready. The table did not have enough chairs and the floor was dirty. The waiting staff did not seem like they knew what they were doing and looked utterly miserable.

Our orders were taken but we had to wait ages for it to come. By 14.00 my 2 year old daughter and her 18 month old cousin were staving. I complained to the staff and asked if they could provide some crisps or something for the children while we waited but was told I would have to buy it from the bar. I said there was no way I was paying extra money for food when we should have had our meal by that time.

The food finally came at 14.10 and was virtually inedible. The vegetables were hard and tasteless, all the meat was overcooked and chewy, the chips had black flakes on them indicating that old oil was used to cook them (at least 2-3 days old oil) and the camembert was obviously microwaved rather than baked.

We were all looking forward to having a pudding but we gave up that idea due to the ridiculously slow service. Also I noticed that during our wait 2 other couples upped and left as they were sick of waiting. So they missed out on some trade.

This was supposed to be a lovely relaxed celebration meal. Instead we had a stressful, disappointing and upsetting time. We had booked the table at 12.30 for a reason (i.e. 2 children under 3) and therefore 90 minutes is too long to have to wait for food.

If there were timing issues then they could have suggested for us to have ordered our food in the bar as we waited to be seated. Also it might have been nice for the staff to have brought some bread or something for the children. We tried complaining but got ignored and fobbed off.

The outside of the building and the grounds are lovely. The inside could do with a lot of TLC, the food needs to be improved and the staff need to be helpful and friendly.

I certainly would not recommend this place to anyone. Avoid!!!!

On Sunday 29th April we celebrated our Silver Wedding in the Chapel at Rothley Court.
We actually had our Wedding Reception here in the Wilberforce room 25 years ago! That event was highly successful and in so many ways so was this one. There are now obvious problems at the hotel mainly ones of lack of investment in the fabric of the hotel - heating not working etc.,. BUT the venue is still fabulous. The Chapel though freezing (the brought in heaters failed as the hotel circuitary is pretty kaput) is an outstanding room - totally authentic and full atmosphere. The original panelled rooms and bedrooms in the main building are so romantic and incredibly comfortable.
The food and the service was fanatstic and the on-site staff throughout the weekend were so kind, warm and helpful.
The prices are very competitive - I would say great location for a wedding but check every detail over and over. What the staff lack in training and professionalsim is made up for by a can-do attitude and helpfulness. Plea to English Inns please don't let this venue run down, its amazing and much loved - spend the money and recoup by increasing prices.

Room Tip: Beg for an original room in main house

Stayed here in the New Year for a friend's celebratory event. We booked 3 months in advance and despite 5 (yes, 5) phone calls and 2 emails requesting confirmation, it was never received. We arrived and, needless to say, there was no record of our booking!

We were put in one of the annex rooms which smelt damp and had significant black mould growing round the shower. After complaining, we were moved to the main house. The room was marginally better although there was a wet rag and dirty towel on the carpet by the doorway and we had to ask for the stained sheets to be changed. Lovely! The room was very dusty and felt pretty unclean all round.

Breakfast was pretty average and swimming in grease with the cheapest bacon you can imagine.

Had we not been here to attend a celebration we would have definitely found alternative accommodations. The whole place was just tired looking and in need of a decor and management make over. Sad really as the building itself it pretty and does have a lot of promise.

We shan't stay again and I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your stay in January. During the last 2 months we have decorated several areas of the hotel including the coffee lounge and restaurant to improve the standards. This is of course a work in progress with the next area being the hotel bar. We will also raise your comments on housekeeping and breakfast with the Head Chef and Housekeepers.

I stayed in this beautiful old hotel for a friends wedding. The grounds and atmosphere of the hotel are simply stunning and offer a picturesque setting for a wedding. I enjoyed the day and found the meal and buffet to be of good quality and the staff attentive. However, I didnt enjoy the experience of the room quite so much. I fully appreciate that the building is old, and that the upkeep of such a building is an ongoing project, I stayed in the court mews, the room itself was spacious, warm and clean but had a strange smell and a tired appearance. It was the second room we had been offered as the first on the ground floor of the mews was damp. The corridors to these rooms are dreadful, dull chipped paint, cobwebs and dead insects around the ceilings light fittings and staircase, unfortunately this was also observed in the wedding ceremony room, along with the odd missing lightbulb. This has nothing to do with the age of the building, just poor housekeeping, and it is such a shame. It didnt ruin my visit as I was there for a special occasion, but I would have been disappointed if I had booked here for a weekend away.

Room Tip: avoid the Court Mews, expect beautiful main building to be like the historic house that it is!
