“Good location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2013

We were attending a wedding at Haileybury College so booked the Feathers for the convenient location.
On arrival we were delighted with the ample parking space close to the entrance. At reception at first we thought there was no-one there but, on leaning over the counter, there was in fact a young man lounging in a very low chair! A welcome to the Feathers was not forthcoming.
Our double room was fine though the furniture is a bit dated. The bed was huge and very comfortable and we had a great night's sleep. However there was only one bedside table and lamp due to the wardrobe being at the other side of the bed and the other bedside table was in the opposite corner with tea/coffee making things on it. A re-arrangement of furniture is called for.
The bed and linen was immaculate however the dust on the lower parts of the pine console table was thick and white and had not been cleaned for days possibly weeks. The windows were also grimy and had not been cleaned for some while. The bathroom was dated but clean.
We had breakfast and were not disappointed, there was plenty of choice of hot dishes and the waitresses were quick to bring extra tea and coffee and were polite and eager to help.

Overall the hotel suited us on price and location (and breakfast).

Thank you for taking the time to review us on trip advisor. I am sorry you were not completely satisfied with your bedroom, the issues you raised have been passed onto the housekeeping team and they have been re-trained to keep attention to detail. Thank you for your kind comments regarding breakfast.

The stay started well - on arrival we were up-graded to a larger double as we were staying two nights (see room comments below). On entering the breakfast room on the first day we were shown to a table and asked for our tea/coffee requirements, together with our toast requirements - both arrived promptly. Our full English breakfast arrived in impossibly quick time - being kept warm somewhere maybe???
That's the end of the good unfortunately.
The room had a comfortable bed, pine furniture from the 70's, draughty windows and a wardrobe with the door hanging off. The bathroom had seen better days - the shower surround was broken and hanging off, the shaving light was the same. The most disgusting thing about the room was that the toilet leaked FOUL water over the bathroom floor - a stain showed that this was not a new issue!!
The breakfast on the Sunday morning was a very different experience to the previous day - a surly, miserable waitress in her early twenties told us to sit wherever we wanted. We asked for a Tea and a Coffee but only got a Tea. We reminded her we still wanted a Coffee so she went away and came back and served Coffee to the adjacent table but forgot ours again - waiting for another few minutes I eventually lost patience and went to find her standing around - so asked for the Coffee please - the Coffee arrived, but still no Milk - off I went again and lo and behold she was standing around in exactly the same spot as previously.
The breakfast again arrived extremely promptly but the food wasn't that hot and the bacon was like shoe leather it was so dried out - the toast is fab though. So it would appear that my suspicions about the food not being freshly cooked on the Saturday were confirmed by the state of the lousy breakfast on the Sunday - my partner had an omelette on the sunday - they are plain omelettes with a garnish of your choice - i.e. cold plastic ham and the like - YUK!!
NEVER AGAIN!!!

Room Tip: We were upgraded - so don't bother.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on trip advisor. We are sorry that you felt the service you received during your stay was not up to the usual high standards we set ourselves. Your point will be raised at the next team meeting and full re-training will be giving to make sure this does not happen again. Once again thank you

Had lunch today and it was horrid. My husband had a prawn cocktail that consisted of frozen prawns, limp lettuce laid on a plate that any school child could have put there. His shank of lamb was out of a microwave, rock hard roast potatoes and non discript vegetable. I and my uncle had the roast pork that along with the shank of lamb was squeezed onto a side plate, the pork, potatoes and veg had absolutely no taste, the stuffing was a joke, like eating sawdust, and the so called "Homemade Yorkshire Pudding" was like a giant crisp. All this held together with horrible, thin watery gravy. We should have sent it back, but picked at it and said nothing and paid for it, but we will never go there again, and will tell everyone we know not to either. I would have been embarrassed to serve that meal up. In todays day and age why are we still served this rubbish. they used to have such a fantastic name and thats the only reason we stopped there, more fool us.

We have stayed here a few times, so knew what it was like. Room was clean and comfortable, although at 08.00 the shower was a little on the cool side. Word of warning, if your arachnophobic like me, get someone to check the bath in the mornings. My husband saved me from an encounter with the biggest spider HE had ever seen. (He said it was washing itself with a loofah-but I suspect he was telling porkies!) this is not the fault of the cleaning staff, (although there were a little too many cobwebs for my liking!) they are situated in a small village with lots of trees about, so it can only be expected that the spiders like to check out the accommodation. There is a fairly good choice of pub grub, if you want to eat there in the evening. The breakfast was delicious. For a change you might like to try the egg ham and cheese toast. It was scrumptious, and very filling, so if you're going to opt for that at breakfast, you would be better not to eat too much cereal beforehand. There was a fairly good choice of cereal, and some nice pastries too. Overall The Feathers is good value for money.

Recent new management seems keen to change where needed. Some staff(housekeeping side) gone, others still there.Current staff very pleasant, efficient and helpful,(as most were in the past),and very keen to make our stay a good one. Some recent changes evident ie new bed! and tidied back of parking area,as well as possibly improved food (although never bad in the past).

Room Tip: Ask the very helpful Mary(booking secretary) at the hotel for her advice,to match your specific requ...

My husband and I stayed for one night for a friends wedding reception nearby.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely look at returning in the future. We had a room on the ground floor, it was very quiet and in a separate building from the pub. The bed was really comfortable and the biggest we have ever slept in. Breakfast in the pub was fantastic, a huge choice and suitable for all.
We ate a meal in the restaurant when we arrived and this was very reasonable with a good choice too.
