“Wedding at GHM”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

We had a fantastic wedding at GHM (ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening reception). From start to finish (planning to execution) the staff (particularly Rose and Jill) were helpful, experienced, professional, efficient, responsive, accommodating and a real pleasure to deal with. The entire day ran smoothly and Jill was on hand to support us, co-ordinate and supervise every step of the way. Ash, the resident DJ, was superb. The Bridal Suite is fantastic (large, modern and comfortable). Thanks GHM.

We had our wedding at Great Hallingbury on 13th October. The venue itself was absolutely stunning and the staff were wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble for them; they went out of their way to make things easier for my Dad (who is severely disabled) and they were extremely friendly and helpful to all our guests.

The food for the reception was spot on - everybody loved the buffet and the hog roast went down a treat. The inclusive breakfast is well worth it - service is fantastic and the choice is just right.

The rooms themselves were brilliant - the Bridal Suite was simply breathtaking. We hope to return on our anniversary to that very suite to enjoy the glorious setting without the hectic backdrop of a wedding going on!

Highly recommended - a real gem of a hotel in an unlikely location.

We got married here early September and everything was perfect. We had our ceremony in the Oak room and our wedding breakfast in the Riverside restaurant. Both rooms are lovely. All of the staff worked really hard on the day to make sure everything ran smoothly and they did such a fantastic job of setting everything up for us. The manager also introduced himself on the Sunday morning after our wedding to check that everything was ok, this was very nice. All of our guests said on the day that the venue was beautiful and the food was delicious, our guests are still commenting on how nice the whole day/venue was.
The Bridal Suite which we stayed in was absolutely stunning!!!

We would love to go back for our anniversary!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: If you're going to moan about plane noise then book somewhere that is not near an airport!

Recently returned from this outstanding Hotel. (weekend 12-14 Oct) My wife and I decided for our wedding anniversary to try the wine, dine and stay offer for 2 nights in a superior room. What a bargain !! Lets start by saying what many others in the reviews have said.....Yes it is near to the airport BONUS..thats why we chose it!! Yes you can hear airplanes sometimes but they honestly do not disturb you.
Now to the important stuff.
We flew in to Stansted late at night, so we missed the first evenings dinner. On arrival the receptionist explained that they had arranged a free Lunch the following day as a replacement for the missed Dinner. (we were not expecting that) Hotels which are this flexible and generous are few and far between. The room (Room number 12) was just perfect. My wife loved the decor and historical feel. It was huge and the walk in shower was a dream. Full English Breakfast served to order in The Lakeside Restaurant was 10 out of 10. The surprise Lunch which was served in the stylish and comfortable Garden Bar was delicious,(just check out the menu online) We did not spend our full allocated amount of 25 pounds each on the lunch which replaced our missed first nights Dinner so guess what ??? Yes, unbelievably they deducted the remainder from our bill. This is one serious customer care and service nominee for best Hotel ever. A wedding was taking place on Saturday but we never felt neglected and ALL the staff made us feel very special. Dinner was served in the Oak Room due to the Wedding, which i preferred as it was more intimate and romantic. We decided not to take the 3 course set Menu due to FULL tummies so we opted for various dishes from the A La Carte menu. ( check the menu online ) And yes once again we were refunded the difference..Just AMAZING. Our Deep and heartfelt thanks for the most memorable Hotel stay ever must go to, - Jonathan, Hotel manager - Lee, Maitre D' - Ana, Dining Room - and last but not least Codi, the Hotels very own Cultural Attache who gave us bread from the kitchen on 2 occasions to feed the Carp in the Lake, they take food from your hand !! Overall 12 out of 10 for this Jewel of tranquility.

Room Tip: Room 12 Superior room, Huge with Great views over the gardens.

We got married here on the 6th of october and everything was amazing, the staff could not have done enough for us and our guests. Rose was our wedding co-ordinator on the day and she was more than amazing, everything was in its place and she worked so hard all day ensuring everything ran smoothly. On the run up to our day i had bombarded both Rose and Jill with questions and they were always wonderful and helpful, our rooms were all amazing and all our guests were more than happy with there rooms, as for people who have complained about the noise of the planes, i cant understand why you would complain when you know how close it is to an airport and thats not the hotels fault. Our room was stunning both the night before and the bridal suite on the night of our wedding and we hardly herd the plans at all. The food was lovely and at breakfast we had so much to choose from, throughout our stay all the staff were so lovely and could not do enough for you and the manager also introduced himself to us which was really nice. I would reccommend this hotel to everyone especially as a wedding venue, me and my husband will def be returning to celebrate our anniversary in a years time and i cant wait to go back.

When i first found out where we were going on our business trip, i was a little dubious knowing that this particular hotel is at the end of the Standard Airport runway, but noise is scarce. I had an amazing time. My room was just perfect, everything that i needed was there (except for an iron). However, when i asked for an iron to be provided it was bought to my room for me, with an ironing board. The food was just gorgeous, never had meals like these before EVER! Now to save the best part tuntil the end, the staff, WOW!!! They were just fantastic, feeled our every need, Thank you so much for a fantastic time and I will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: The rooms that are seperated and out of the main building, room numbers 105, 106, etc. are definitel...

We booked this hotel on a whim at the very last minute without doing our usual trawl through the reviews. The website looked promising so we went ahead and booked (what we thought)was one of the better rooms for a Saturday night. Unfortunately It appears that this promising country hotel does not 'multi-task' very effectively!

We arrived to find a wedding party occupying the whole hotel frontage for their photographs necessitating a trek through a back door/fire escape past a mop and bucket and a pile of laundry bags to find the reception desk. Check in was fine, but we were informed that we would not be able to use either the bar or the restaurant that evening. Not great considering the hotel happily charged me full price for my room whilst not offering us use of all the facilities. We were offered a table in another dining room opposite reception for an evening meal. As the bar was out of bounds to us, we ordered a bottle of wine for our room only to witness a small break-down on the part of the two reception staff.....firstly we were informed that we would have to wait because it seemed they too were unable to access the bar! Then, when our perflexed expressions sank in, there was a very panicked search for a wine list. We eventually had a bottle of wine delivered to our room.

The room itself was nicely appointed, but nothing outstanding. The flushing function on the toilet was literally hanging off the wall and the on/off tap in the shower consisted of a piece of wood held in place with a (not quite) counter sunk rusty screw. Not really appropriate for a hotel of this supposed calibre. I would like to say that the supply of ear plugs is a nice touch considering the proximity to Stansted airport however, these were essential given the wedding disco, screaming wedding guests, slamming doors and children running around the corridors until the early hours. We were prepared for the aircraft noise incidentally.

I am prepared to be corrected, but on the website we booked our stay, this hotel claims to have an 'award-winning' restaurant. Exactly which award is a bit of a mystery. The whole experience was quite odd and Fawlty-esque. On arrival we were offered the centre table in the dining room; when my wife requested an alternative we were informed that all the other tables were reserved. (We insisted on moving when we found the table too wobbly for it's function). I can only assume that this was some affectation on the part of the management as it soon became apparent that this was not the case: all diners were firstly offered that table before rejecting it for an alternative! Our waiter was fawning and ineffectual and we have never eaten in a place where the staff 'hard sell' the bottled water whilst the wine list is not even offered! The food we ordered was frankly bizarre. I am at a loss to imagine how it is possible to serve guinea fowl with mushroom stuffing or Halibut with braised fennel with neither dish actually tasting of any of the component parts or anything else for that matter! In fact everything we sampled with the exception of a passable cheese board arrived at our table, tastless, bland and lacking any seasoning at all. Had I been deluded enough to order the £24.00 steak I might have caused a scene! We requested our cheese board when ordering our meal so we might receive it at room temperature; Our waiter, in what might have been a moment of inspiration offered to have this sent up to our room whilst we ate our meals. Unfortunately this small service failed to materialise and we had to wait in our room for our 'straight-from-the-fridge' cheese to arrive. Very poor show.

We did not take breakfast despite having already paid for it. On check out we were not even asked if we had enjoyed our stay; perhaps our expressions and the dark circles around our eyes said it all!

This stay caught me in an uncharacteristically forgiving mood when it comes to poor service, standards and value for money otherwise I would have given this review face to face to the manager and really put a dampener on his quiet Sunday morning.

I am quite sure marketing this hotel as a wedding venue is extremely lucrative, but to fleece unsuspecting, full price paying guests is, at best a very cynical move on the part of management. Shame on you.
