I had qualms about reserving the Hotel for our joint Birthday celebration (five old schoolfriends, plus partners, plus some teens) but was extremely pleasantly surprised by absolutely everything we encountered in using the Hotel.

RESTAURANT:
The restaurant had good service, the food was really fantastic value - superbly cooked, excellent portions, with a menu which showed they understand flavours and was not overfussy or complicated. The menu choices were diverse enough for Vegetarians and non-Vegetarians, and they honoured a request for a more simple dish for one of our children, and adapted the menu for another. At £15 for three courses it was absolutely brilliant value!! - I highly commend them on this, plus for serving us all at the same time, and the food being hot and of a very fresh quality, and high standard.

STAFF HELPFULNESS
We had brought our own celebratory cake, and the bar staff sliced it and provided plates, for us, which was helpful and very attentive considering they were not going to make a profit on this.

BREAKFAST
The breakfast was pretty good, excellent quality, very tasty, and the coffee was some of the best I've ever come across in a Hotel.

BAR
Their only problem was a plague of wasps, which prevented us from enjoying the upstairs outdoor bar extension during the afternoon, but to be fair they did warn us and had done their best to attract the wasps to a sweet diversion, which kept their numbers down somewhat.

QUALITY OF ACCOMMODATION
The rooms were light and spacious, clean, nice bathrooms, good products, and had plenty of storage, and the flatscreen wall-mounted TVs had plenty of channels and were of the best quality I've EVER encountered in any rating of Hotel!! What a treat!!

SPA
The spa facilities were excellent, according to my teens - lovely pool, hot jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, spacious changing facilities, and large floats for children/teens to play with, which they loved.

OBSERVATIONS ON THE GOLF COURSE
The golf course didn't have a footpath for walkers, unfortunately, but was very well-kept and busy while we were there. It was nice to see the golf course from the bar and restaurant, and access everywhere was excellent.

SUMMARY
I would say that this Hotel is often underrated, given what I've read on this Website, but they really did us proud with our celebrations and I would like to rectify the balance more in their favour.

I can see how it might attract criticism for noisy rooms (as golfers can walk past the rooms easily enough, as can other residents, though rooms have a blind which prevents anyone seeing in) but at the price we paid for our rooms - doubles, twins all £49 each - and the price of the meals at £15 per head - we felt we had really done well and obtained excellent value for money.

It would be fair to say that our party are considering meeting up here again in the future because everything combined to make our stay such a success, and it was such excellent value that I think what a few people find to be annoyances and foibles can be overlooked because it makes up for this in many other ways.

EVENTS/FUNCTIONS
There were a few large parties that night, and we could have had access to their private room if we had liked, which we might take up on another occasion, and all this at no extra cost to ourselves. This is pretty amazing, as we were being quoted £80 for function rooms elsewhere, only a few miles down the road, and therefore this is also worth bearing in mind if you are thinking of booking an event there.

RATING
I would highly recommend the Hotel overall. They were extremely helpful, the service was good, and the facilities excellent. But if I were to save the praise for one element, it would be the value for money - I think it's fair to say you can't beat these prices, you don't feel overcharged but rather spoilt, and that's what it's all about when selecting somewhere to stay and spend down-time.

The term 'country club' conjures up an idea of some rural idyll but nothing could be further from the truth!
When we checked in I asked if the room was quiet and was assured it was. However when we arrived at room 3 it was on the ground floor and looked straight onto the car park outside the window. We could also hear children crying in the room next door as the walls are paper thin. The bedroom and bathroom were clean enough but it was one of the hottest days of the year and there was no form of air conditioning. We couldn't leave the windows open either as they would have been so easy for someone to climb through!
The food in the restaurant was very average albeit reasonably priced. The floor was dirty though and remnants of other people's meals were strewn over the carpet. Not very pleasant.
The only saving grace was that the hotel does not overcharge for drinks - 2 bottles of Coca Cola were £2.60. House wine 13.50 per bottle.
There was a wedding reception at the hotel the day we were there and when we got back to our room we walked in and the air was stifling and the child next door was still bawling. There were also a couple of young lads having an altercation in the entrance to the Lodge(where the bedrooms are) so enough was enough and we went home!
Very, very poor - avoid if you can.

We were on a tight budget but desperately wanted a bit of time to ourselves without our 2 babies to put to bed and waking us early in the morning. We wanted a pool and a jacuzzi and a full english with the option of dinner in our room or in a no frills restaurant. This hotel fitted the bill perfectly. The reception staff were so polite and professional, bar staff pleasant, and the person who took our telephone booking offered us a suite as a website only offered us a twin room. The room was huge! The bathroom was clean and modern with a good shower and the bed was comfy. Breakfast was lovely and you could return if you didn't fill your plate enough the 1st time.
It's very geared towards club members so food is served in a lounge but was enough for us. The only thing I would mention is that the rooms (in the lodge) are a short walk "outside" from the club which houses the fitness suite and food lounge so if you plan to swim I would recommend taking a set of casual clothes/shoes to dress into for walking back and forth.

In the most part this was a nice Hotel, food was excellent but there is a door into the Lodge rooms via the open veranda from the function room. From 1.30-02.15 on our first night we had drunken men running up & down the corridor banging on doors & shouting rather threatening! Complaints were made by myself & other guests. No response from Management until I emailed on my return then apologies and I was told that a night watchman did attend but why did it take so long !

What a little gem !

We booked to stay here having got a good deal through a hotel broker on the web.. and what a great find it turn out to be !

We were visiting friends in the area, so were staying with our kids ,and though i should stress, kids are welcomed & catered for, it is a predominately adult orientated establishment.... as its name might suggest.
The hotel is attached to a popular golf club and sports/ spa / fitness center.

Rooms are smart and contemporary....think 5*+ Travelodge !! Beautifuly kept, smart decor and well equipped. Flat screen TV, tea/coffee making, controllable heating, smart modern bathroom and many rooms over look the golf course, making for a pleasant view.
Having two children in tow, we had perfectly adequate Z beds supplied to our room. We were allocated room 31 which overlooks the carpark, and which is quite a bit bigger than the average room (without paying for a suite).
I have seen reviews elsewhere that mention that the rooms on the carpark side are noisy - but our room, due I suspect being on the first, rather than ground floor, did not suffer unduely from this.
The breakfast was included in the price of our stay, and is to be commended ! Serve yourself buffet of thick bacon, quality sausage, hash brownies, beans, scrambled eggs.
Also available; greek yoghurt ,fresh fruit, cereal, fresh toast, fresh quality coffee & tea, and fresh orange. Excellent quality and all our requested drinks / fresh toast came served with a pleasant chat & a smile - I must say those staff serving breakfast were truly a credit to this hotel !
We also had a number of bar snacks during our stay, and the food was equally good - fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced. Full marks to the chef !!
There is a kids' menu - but we did not find this till our last day (see end of review - re :lack of information).

The numerous facilities in this hotel were also very good;
Though fairly small and often busy, the swimming pool was clean & contemporary, and equipped with jacuzzi, sauna & steam room - a great way to relax after a busy day. Be warned that the swimming pool is generally frequented by the serious length swimmer types, and therefore not entirely suited to kids larking around - but all fine & good if your kids can be relied on to behave appropriately. Infact kids are only allowed to use the pool between the hours of 10am to 7pm, and those under 14 must be supervised, which is fair enough , but even during these times they are unlikely to have sole use of the pool.
We are not golfers or tennis players (there are several indoor courts) so could not comment on these facilities, nor the gym...only to say they looked really good.We did not get to use the spa either for that matter.
There was, we noticed some kind of a kids club located at the hotel/fitness center, but it seemed to be used almost exclusively by local people.
There was also wifi available at the hotel, but this is payable.

I only have a couple of small gripes about the place; firstly there's no floor plan or coherent list of whats on offer at the hotel to the hotel visitor - The place is complex in its layout, and there is alot on offer... but oh so difficult to get any information ! Even getting to the breakfast in the morning is not straightforward.

The facilities seem very much orientated towards the local club members and not the hotel visitor, which is a shame because I'm sure I would have liked to join in with a fitness class, and /or try the spa, and possibly sent let the kids go to the kids club, but really the hotel does not seem to be fully integrated into the scheme of things on the leisure & other general facilites offered at the place.
I think that they were really missing a trick with this - even bigger shame they did not run health/fitness offers/kids club, or promotions, to their guests ...or even just give out some basic information in the hotel rooms (other the accommodation information) !!
There was also no mention of the extensive bar menu in the hotel rooms - only the more expensive dinner menu.....which could put some people off (a shame, because the bar food was great value and some great cuisine). We never even knew there was a kids menu until our last day ...and came across this quite by chance (they were hidden on a table in the corner of the bar).

The sign posting from the main road, and even on the access road to the place, could be better (we nearly ended up on the airfield next door !)....it is really quite tricky, and more so in the dark !! The subtle signage in pale beige & brown does not help !

The other gripe is internet access - would be nice if there was a comunal access terminal and/or free wifi. Since it was evident alot o their clientelle were business people, you would have thought this aspect would have been given greater priority ?

Overall this place is excellent value for money and I would be very happy to recomend it to families (with well behaved children), the business traveller, and sports enthusiast alike !

I booked this accomodation for 2 couples as we had a wedding in Colchester. I worried, given the reviews, but no need to. Disconcerting arrival experience (through a business park), but away from road noise, and restful. Excellent value for money, B&B for less than £30pppn with activehotels website. First floor rooms were spacious enough with pleasant views down onto the golf course trees and ponds. (Rooms on ground floor may be noisier due to the passing golf buggies.) Key card was tempermental and needed several swipes to work. Lunches and dinners in the bistro above the golf shop suited our widely varying tastes very well indeed; house wine reasonably priced. Sunny veranda looking down onto the first tee was ideal for morning coffee or afternoon chilled white wine. Golf course (I'm told) was enjoyable enough, clubs can be hired, and watch out for the family of geese on every fairway. Pool, sauna etc had good long opening hours. The one thing that I hated was the taste of the tap water, which I found it very unpleasant indeed. If I was going to suggest an improvement, it would be some complementary bottled water in the bedrooms, or one of the cold water dispensers that most offices have, up in the bistro (but there was a vending machine in the lobby).

I booked a group of guests into the Lodge for our wedding. It was a mistake.
There were some domestic problems, including the key-card system breaking down (meaning that my bride couldn't get into her room before the wedding!) and the sink of the "bridal suite" being cracked and 'fixed' with mastik.
The service was pretty poor too - their response to our problems was slow and uncooperative. A manager was called but never visited the site. Their attitude was pretty lax. The catering staff also lacked training and customer service skills.
Catering arrangements are haphazard - your hotel guide offers room service, but it is denied when you telephone reception. The arrangement for breakfast is poorly thought-out and results in large queues for lacklustre food, in s small bar-area.

The Essex is primarily a golf & country club, so one might forgive them for being less-than-perfect. However, the experience we had shows deficiencies which are far beyond this, and caused us some major irritation and disappointment.
The hotel side of the operation is in dire need of a management shake-up. The buildings and room facilities are in dire need of investment. The staff are in dire need of training to improve service levels.
