“Excellent pub grub!”
Reviewed September 15, 2013 via mobile

This is a great local pub with a really welcoming atmosphere! I ordered the mixed grill which was excellent - with real chips, not reheated from a packet! The sausages in the mixed grill were obviously high quality from a local butchers, and the other meats were all cooked to perfection. One friend had fish and chips - a huge portion of fresh fish in a proper home made lager batter - and another had the sirloin steak, which was cooked to perfection. All in all an excellent evening! Highly recommended!!

“Probably the best pub in the Howden area - by some way”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

Being President of the Proper Chip Society, I eagerly arrived at Whelans last Friday (7th June) as I had heard that the pub were serving proper chips (i.e. not frozen or pre-packed). The pub has been completely over-hauled since my last visit 2 or 3 years ago, and it was good to see the place more than half full. There were four hand-pulled beers on offer, I tried three of them and all were well served, the right temperature etc. The food was very good - nice range of starters and main courses, including a selection of filled Yorkshire Puddings. The chips were not a disappointment - nicely cooked with skins on. Might have been better in beef dripping but hard for any pub to do given that vegetarians can arrive any minute. The pub was presented with a certificate from the Society as a Purveyor of the Proper Chip. Nice friendly staff, very pleasant proprietor of the Irish variety.
It appears there is regular entertainment that may be worth a look at - we shall certainly return. Well done!

“A great meal at Whelans”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

This pub has a great atmosphere. We received a warm welcome from the Landlady and bar staff. The seating was very comfortable The Menu was limited but what we had was beautifully cooked and tasted wonderful. Some really good traditional irish cuisine. Looking forward to our next visit

“Fantastic evening and wonderful food!”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

Me and my girlfriend wanted a nice tea one evening on the way out of hull going to West Yorkshire after browsing trip advisor we picked Whelans, we'd never been before. We will definitely go again, it's a little gem in the small village of asselby. Food was piping hot, filling and very tasty. quiet atmosphere but nice music playing and the service was great! And after 4 diet cokes, 2 starters and 2 mains 31 pounds was a great price too.

“Proper Irish cooking”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

Whelans is proper Irish cooking - with Irish ingredients (and a Yorkshire twist).
It was the second time we had eaten there - I had soup of the day then liver and onions in a yorkshire pud. Excellent value - we will be back.
Good selection of local real ales, regularly changing.
Occasional live music nights.
