We stayed for one night while walking the Cumberland Way. The furniture in the bar & lounge is tired & needs replacement. The staff were pleasant enough, but not very welcoming - they seemed to have a lot to do. Our twin room was not prepared and we were shown a double, however it was zip/link beds and they were soon separated while we waited downstairs. The bedrooms were clean, modern & well equiped. The food was good, but there was no option of reasonably priced bar meals. We all enjoyed the food, but eating expensive meals in the tatty bar was not ideal. It was a cold damp evening and no fires were lit. We had to wear fleeces all evening, and the couple next to us were wearing their outdoor coats. Rubbish in the bins next to the fireplaces looked as if it had been accumulating all summer and was most unpleasant to see. We asked for an early breakfast which was served very promptly and was freshly cooked, however we felt that for the price we paid there should have been more available including fresh fruit and yoghurts.

We were in a holiday cottage nearby and called in at the Royal at Docray this week and decided to order food as there seemed to be some interesting items on the menu.
Although the prices were very high we were happy to pay if the quality was there.
Unfortunately, the food that was served was nothing more than pub grub.

Just had lunch at The Royal Hotel, Dockray near Ullswater. Chicken BLT and chips; delicious! We wanted to see if the food was as good as it was when we visited some years ago. We were not disappointed.
The evening menu sounds good, too. And the sun is shining; always a bonus!
The interior and toilets require some modernisation now though. Otherwise a good place to eat.

We stopped by at the pub for a drink, saw the menu and thought the food sounded nice so popped back for dinner. The pub looks a little tired to be honest but the food sounded modern. My cajun salmon salad was very nice. The rest of the family were unimpressed by their choices. Food was bland in their view.

The Room was tiny, the shower trickled water and the Hotel seems to be run by very little staff.
The food was overpriced and pretty basic. Breakfast took 80minutes, was the waitress cooking
it and serving it? The hotel is in a super location but needs upgrading particularly in the bar and
"lounge" areas. All in all a disappointment at almost £ 90 for B & B. or is this the going rate for the " Lakes"
