“Charming B&B Experience”
Reviewed June 7, 2014

My husband and I stayed here over the late August bank holiday weekend in 2013. The property is beautiful and our room had all the comforts we're used to with the charms we hoped for from a Scottish B&B. The owners could not have been nicer. The breakfast was selection was impressive. I still haven't found a better bowl of porridge. As we were checking out the owners gave us a quick tour of the other rooms in the house as we were the last guests leaving. It was a treat to see all the work they've done on the property and hear how they'd collected everything to decorate the home. Loved the Caramel bars left in the room too!

Thank you so much for your kind and generous Review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us at Durn House. We have tried to achieve a "homely" feel to the refurbishment of our lovely Georgian Mansion as well as maintaining a Scottish feel to the furnishings and decor. We do hope that you will visit again soon.

We stayed for a short weekend break with our young children (8&6) and were treated like royalty. The house is fantastically renovated, with tasteful period furnishings and a super-comfy 4poster bed...... the en-suite bathroom was bigger than your average bungalow!!

Dinner and breakfast were both faultless. Would highly recommend.

Three days at Durn House were most enjoyable. It's a beautifully furnished and decorated house with lots of artefacts of interest.

The hosts, John and Sandra, were welcoming and friendly but unobtrusive.

The room we were in was in the attic but was huge, and had a lovely en suite. Only slight issue was the lack of full sized windows which meant there was no outlook other than the sky.

Breakfasts were well cooked and served with style.

We didn't have dinner although menus looked delicious.

There were lovely little touches which made the experience more interesting than any hotel chain.

Overall, excellent and we would definitely recommend to others.

We had 4 wonderful nights at Durn House & we wished we could have had more, on arrival we were warmly greeted by our hosts John & Sandra who gave us hot drinks and biscuits in the beautiful lounge,& told us the history of the house & about the renovation work they had done, the house is amazing the rooms are warm, inviting with a fantastic Scottish theme.
After our drinks sandra showed us to our room, my actual word was WOW, the room was huge an extremely comfy four poster bed, chaise, beautiful antique furniture, pictures and decorations, the bathroom was the same huge free standing bath with fab view out of the window, working fire place, which i have told my hubby he has to take me back in the winter just so i can have the fire on while in the bath.
Breakfast was brilliant, we had a full breakfast, eggs benedict, the kippers which were excellent, and also a choice of cereals, toast, and warm pastries, so plenty of choice to set you up for the day.
There was a gentlemans club with huge chesterfield sofas & pool table, and also a lovely guest lounge again with comfy sofas, lots of reading materials & also the chance to have a wee dram totaly free.
We have stayed in many places, and rate this one of the best, a wonderful country house retreat in a secluded location but also within walking distance of portsoy, at Durn House there was everything we needed, a warm welcome from our hosts, outstanding accommodation with lovely little touches that made it special from bathrobes, sweets & biscuits in our room, nothing was too much trouble for John & Sandra, my kids rang the retreat to arrange a surprise in the room for us, which sandra did for them, a beautiful bouquet of flowers, box of choccies and a card, and i also got to have a cuddle with Ben & Levi the hosts lovely spaniels.
We strongly recommend Durn House it is a little gem in a outstanding location of natural beauty.
Many Thanks John & Sandra for making our stay amazing
All the best love Barry & Benji Walker and we hope to stay with you again soon.

Our family stayed at the lovely Durn House a couple of weeks ago on our whirl-wind road trip of Great Britain. The Durn House was one of the highlights of our trip! We were graciously welcomed by our hosts, John and Sandra. We were not sure of our dinner plans as we arrived late in the afternoon and we were offered to stay for dinner at the Durn House. What an excellent decision! The onsite chef prepared us an amazing meal. After dinner the hosts invited us to the drawing room for a night cap and we learned the history of the Durn House. We had great conversation with our hosts, the chef and the other guests.
The home and rooms are grand and beautiful. The rooms were set up with wonderful amenities. Breakfast was also an enjoyable meal. We wished we could have stayed more than one night. We highly recommend this beautiful manor.

Like a previous guest I read the reviews on here and thought, ok it looks good and as it was dearer than normal I mistakenly thought that would be a good guide as to the quality, how wrong was I.

Upon being greeted on arrival I was ushered into the lounge area, although I had already declined the offer of tea or coffee the host sat me down with two equally uncomfortable looking businessmen who had obviously taken her up on the offer of tea before being led up to their respective rooms. Ok, so it was a nice if not welcome gesture however I then had to wait for her to come down from delivering the two previous guests, upon returning i was asked to follow to my room, as we walked into the hall the hostess promptly disappeared into a door marked no admittance and closed it behind her, how rude!

Upon returning I was taken to the attic room where I was advised on the idiosyncratic ways in which the shower operated, What? At £125 a night for a B and B this was kind of taking the preverbal. Anyway I thought I would give it a go before going down to dinner, yes you've guessed it I shouldn't have bothered. The bed was also uncomfortable, read the previous review on the quality of the bed and you will see what I mean.

Dinner on the other hand was superb and I have to say so was breakfast. To sum up, overpriced and needs a good clean as there were quite a few cobwebs around the place, house rules are in your face re. Lose your keys and it's £25... Don't park here, don't park there .. All this and a note that says we want you to relax???? The plus to this venue is the food, it is outstanding. The hosts were friendly enough despite the rather brusk welcome I had received. Last but not least the wifi can only be described as useless, can I suggest that if you want to tap into the business market then this will most certainly need to be sorted!

It was the glowing reviews on trip advisor which led me to book this B&B so I feel duty bound to review it after a somewhat disappointing stay and maybe others will not have such high expectations and not feel let down.
The main thing was that the bed was extremely uncomfortable. I have a firm mattress and I'm not normally fussy, but it was rock hard. (We were in Culloden suite so avoid that one!) Other issues - when the room was freshened up mid stay the bed was never made for us, no flat sheet on bed ( down duvet extremely hot so a sheet to use as a cover would have been great) a party at night which was loud and cigarette smoke in the whole place, mouldy bread at breakfast, sweetie wrappers in room when arrived- again I'm nitpicking but it wasn't the luxury we hoped for and I think would have had a comfier more pleasant stay in an ordinary (cheaper!) Hotel or B&B.
The house itself is in s Pretty setting, fancy interiors, nice walk down into town and surrounding area well worth a visit, but I would definitely stay somewhere else next time.

Room Tip: Avoid culloden- rock hard bed!
