“Excellent stay and helpful staff”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

We had a girls trip away with 12 of us staying here and a few more people next door at the hostel. The rooms felt really luxurious and the staff went above and beyond to be helpful. Overall had an excellent time and would definitely go back

The Lister Arms is good quality accommodation, with good service in a perfect location for exploring the Yorkshire Dales.

The Lister Arms may be a 17th century coaching inn but the bedrooms have been refurbished to a good modern standard with quality oak furniture. Most of the public areas still retain the old world charm of a country inn, although the dining room is modern.

I found service in the hotel and its restaurant to be excellent, with friendly staff.

My rooms was a family room with a single and double bed (see photo). This was a good size but double bedrooms are smaller. The bathroom was clean and modern although very small (no room for a bath, just a shower) but was nice enough. There was a flat screen TV, hairdryer and tea and coffee making facilities.

I eat in the restaurant for two breakfasts and two evening meals. On each occasion the experience was pleasant. On one night the restaurant and bar area were completely full and a table with 10 people on ordered food before I did. I expected a long wait but in fact I did not have to wait long and the food was excellent. The food it not really ‘fine dining’ but is much higher standard than you would normally expect in a pub. Breakfasts are made with quality fresh ingredients with hot food via waiter service and cold food via a self-service buffet. There was a good selection of hot food but cold food choice was limited to cereals, yogurt and fruit (e.g. no bread roles, cold meats or cheeses).

The hotel is located right in the centre of Malham which is just a perfect location for exploring the Yorkshire dales, with many good walks directly from the hotel, without even a need to drive out anywhere.

Expect some early morning noise as bedroom widows are not double glazed and the dawn chorus around here is prodigious. Price you have to pay for a 400 year old building in the middle of the country I suppose.

I find it hard to fault this hotel. It may not be up to top quality hotel standard but for a country inn it’s probably the best I have stayed in.

The Lister Arms has a lovely feel about it and we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay here. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the food and beer are both good. We ate here on each of the three nights of our stay and there were still plenty of things on the menu that we'd have liked to have tried. Breakfasts, too, were excellent: plenty of choice and everything perfectly cooked.
Our room had a large, comfortable bed and we appreciated the home cooked biscuits and thoughtfulness in providing fresh milk for hot drinks. The only slight drawback was a lack of storage space as the bases of the fitted wardrobe and also some of drawers were filled with alternative bedding. We appreciate this thoughtfulness but it would have been nice to have been able to get our luggage off the bedroom floor, even though we were only staying for a few nights. This really is a very minor issue, though. If we return to the Malham area, we would most certainly stay at The Lister Arms again and have no hesitation in recommending it as a great place to stay.

Eight of us travelled to Malham to enjoy the local walks and to generally "chill out" amongst good friends. Firstly, the weather was extraordinarily glorious. Unfortunately, the bedrooms would have ordinarily been just right, but they were like furnaces at night, so little sleep all round. The ( new) manageress made us all very welcome. The choice of ales was good and the food was "fair". The staff were very helpful, although they did confuse our orders more than once, but we didn't mind - we were too chilled to care!
Conclusion: great location, friendly staff, fair pub food, but a little pricey for an inn at £110 per night.

Room Tip: If it's sunny and hot, make sure you have one of the larger rooms, because there is no air condi...

Feeling a bit peckish after our walk to the Cove and some bird spotting, we decided to just give this place a go. The service was so laid back it was horizontal.... the menu was very well designed and there were a number of places we could have gone to... the benches at the front, the beer garden at the back... we decided on the bar, to get away from the blistering 30 C temperatures and chill.
I had a butchers platter which was essentially a collection of sausage and cheeses from the local area with some bread and chutney... EXCELLENT ! Very reasonably priced also... good to know that British food has improved so much over the last 10 years that you can actually be surprised at the quality and selection now available. Such good value.
Another plus - dog friendly also !

We had a lovely stay at 'The Lister' Everybody made us and Gizmo really welcome. He enjoyed his sausage at breakfast brought by the manager, Lisa. There is a really friendly happy atmosphere here and if you are happy with this relaxed style of service 'The Lister' is definitely for you. The room (17)was clean spacious and well equipped with hairdryer, iron (and board). It overlooked the bear garden but we heard no excessive noise. The tea, coffee, Horlicks and homemade biscuits were very welcome. The staff were happy to freeze our freezer pack for our cold bag and would have filled flasks and supplied picnic had we asked.
Bear in mind this is a pub not a restaurant therefore you order from the bar and staff are more relaxed but service was quick and friendly. we'll be back next year.

Room Tip: 11 and 17 are adjacent to beer garden, wasn't a prob for us. It's an old building windows ar...

Popped in today on a circular walk round Malham, there is a lovely secluded beer garden round the back.
Firstly the ales are very well kept and taste great.
The food however really impressed.
I had steak and ale pie, huge chunks of steak and a good cold crust pastry (not stodgy, and better than the endless servings of flaky pastry that most places serve these days).
Fish and chips had the best batter I have had for a long time and double fried chips...yum.
Son had sausage and mash, he loved it, though they had a smidge too much rusk for my taste...prefer a good cumberland. Though his onion rings looked beyond amazing, I never had chance to try them!
Daughter had burger...huge as expected and clearly good quality meat.

All the food was obviously either made on site or sourced locally.
Lastly the service from the horde of attentive waitresses was impecable and smiley.

We will definately be going back next time we are walking in this area.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks so much for the fabulous review – with Daniel Thwaites as our parent company there is a lot riding on keeping our beer in tip-top condition. So glad it quenched your thirst after your walk. And thank you for the kind comments about the food and the team too. Come back and see us soon.

Kind regards,
Lisa Penny - Manager and all the team at The Lister Arms.
