The house is charming, very clean and comfortable, well equipped and cosy. It is situated in a beautiful location with views across the Flanders fields and enormous skies above. It is in the perfect location for exploring WW1 cemeteries and locations of great interest, but there's also lots of other activities and great places to visit too.
We arrived after a difficult journey with car problems to a warm welcome and a delicious box of breakfast goodies the next morning. Then our host accompanied my husband to the local garage, whose owner had come out specially to fix the car despite being closed for a public holiday weekend. What more could you ask for?
Located just 10 mins drive from the centre of the wonderful old Flemish town of Poperinge this beautifully furnished barn conversion is a great place to stay. The friendly and welcoming hosts - Chantel and Peter provided everything we needed for our stay including a welcome drink (local Hommel beer- rocket fuel!) and a wonderful diy breakfast basket of local eggs, cheese, ham, bread etc each morning. There is a great patio area with barbecue (charcoal supplied!) if the weather is good and a large bar/ dinning/ party room with log burner when it isn't. Like many old houses in Belgium the stairs to the bedrooms are very steep, not a problem for us but could be if you are less able.
Poperinge has many good restaurants and bars and the surrounding area is easily explored by car or bicycle, there are some wonderful old buildings, canals and WW1 sites to visit. Hope to return soon!
Maison Marie is everything it says in the description above and more.
A lovely, clean, smart and modern property where no detail has been overlooked. The kitchen area has everything you would need and have at home, i.e. no skimping by providing just the basics. The lounge area was very comfortable and cozy with a large TV with endless channels. The bathroom although downstairs which perhaps isn't ideal, was spacious and had the most fantastic walk in hot shower. Very agreeable when you've been cycling all day!
During our visit the weather wasn't great so we didn't make much use of the outdoor area but the patio would be a great place to spend a warm evening - using the hot tub, sauna or barbecue while gazing at the open fields with a cold beer.
Maison Marie is about three miles from Poperinge down a very quiet country lane, so if it's peace and quiet you want then the location is perfect but if you do prefer to go out for food and drink a car would be necessary. The only walkable bar option remained closed throughout our visit!
Finally, the owners of Maison Marie definitely deserve a mention. As well as providing a lovely house to stay in, nothing was too much trouble for Peter and Chantal. We received a a welcoming couple of drinks and guidance on where to visit and maps to help. Chantal served us a splendid breakfast daily including local produce and even gave us milk when we had used up our own. When we needed a taxi one evening, Chantal not only called the company for us (we speak no Flemish\French!) but also waited until the driver arrived so that she could issue precise instructions.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Maison Marie to anyone wanting a comfortable base for a visit to the Ypres and Poperinge area.

Couldn't fault the accommodation, in a nice quiet rural setting, clean and modern, everything we needed. Peter and Chantel were great hosts, nothing was too much trouble.
We went for the cycling and had some great rides over our 4 day stay, because of that we didn't get chance to use the hot tub or sauna.
As the property's location is so rural, you will need a car (unless you cycle) to get into Poperinge or Ypres, we didn't see any public transport.

The cottage is brilliantly located in the middle of the best cycling network I've seen. It's ideally located for WWI-related tours, being 5 min from Poperinge and 15min from Ypres.
Amenity-wise it has everything you need - good kitchen, comfy beds, a well stocked bar, and a hot tub and sauna. Ask the owners nicely, and you can use the pool too.
The owners... Peter and Chantal are fantastic. Very hospitable, very keen to make your stay as enjoyable as possible, and they'll help with guides to the local area.
The bedrooms are up a steep set of stairs - anyone with limited mobility or very young children will want to check suitability before booking.
A week at Maison Marie relaxed me more than a month of weekends at home. It was brilliant.

A fantastic holiday home situated in the Belgium countryside. Our children absolutely adored the animals: the two beautiful horses and the cows who would pop over to say hello at every opportunity were the highlight of their holiday. Aside from that, the house is delightful but more so the generosity and hospitality of the hosts who live in the adjacent property. Breakfast is delivered every morning containing a tantalising range of local products and the owners are on hand to provide for your every need, from beer and wine to excellent local knowledge. The bonus of the hot tub provides a splash of luxury and ensures a truly relaxing experience. A great position for exploring the area, particularly the WW1 sites, and a respite from the armies of tourists in Ypres. A car is essential and the stairs could prove difficult for anyone with mobility issues but I would have no hesitation in recommending this property.
