“A (temporary) home for soldiers at the frontline”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

Visiting this house makes you think a bit further about the madness of war. This place was meant for soldiers to stay in for perhaps only one night before having to go to battle again. You are offered coffee or tea by the volunteers (we have met an Australian man). Please note the map in the hallway. You can see some worn places on it near big cities. That is where many soldiers were stationed. They showed each other on the map. I truly believe that the Talbot House made them forget about their misery at least for a little while.

“Nice place for a short visit.”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

A rather large building in what would have been a family home way back. It's now a museum dedicated to the memory of WW1. The rooms as far as I know are kept as close as possible to the original from the 14/18 World War. There is a nice cafe on the ground floor with serves lovely cake with a cup of tea. All proceeds go to the upkeep of the exhibition. Well worth a visit and you will also be doing a bit to preserve history.

“A real step back in time”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

Talbot House was is a must see for anyone visiting the WW1 battlefields or who has an interest in the Great War.

Talbot House was opened in December 1915 as a refuge for soldiers spending time in he reserve lines. It was (and still is) advertised as an 'Everyman's Club' and was opened to all ranks as somewhere to go for a much needed bath, see a show and try to forget the horrors of the trenches for a few hours.

Talbot House today retains the look and feel of he original and offers basic rooms that let you soak up the atmosphere of the day. Prices are pretty reasonable as well.

There is a resident warden who is an absolute wealth of knowledge and is always available for a chat or to offer advice and generally has teapot in hand.

A great way to help understand just what the life of a British Tommy must have been like.

“Unique place! Home feeling, an AGA cooker to use...”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

Although accommodation is basic (we knew this); the whole picture is excellent. The soul of the house and garden; the kitchen with the wonderful AGA stove at your disposal. Staying at the house lets you feel the "soul" of the house.
