“Great New Additions to a Fine Favorite”
Reviewed June 13, 2010

Some things just keep getting better. So it is with the Chacon Family's venture along the scenic Rio Savegre in the high country of the Cordillera de Talamanca. Over the past twelve years I have seen several stages of development at this mountain lodge known as the most reliable place in Costa Rica to see the well-named Resplendent Quetzal.

Each of these stages has surpassed earlier ones in quality without compromising the charm of the place. The newest rooms, Junior Suites, are commodious and architecturally appropriate for the mountain environment. Moreover, the lodge has added a new bar and comfortable conversation hall that would hold their own in upscale resorts anywhere in the world.

Most astonishing of all, however, is the new spa. Tastefully decorated in minimalist style, the spa's relaxing views coordinate with the work of the staff to accomplish the perfect accompanyment to the peak experiences available outside: a morning of outstanding birding on the resort's trails can be followed by a treatment for sore muscles in the spa. This year, a pair of quetzals was nesting within view of the spa!

The cuisine has always been good, and continues to improve. The resort's friendly service staff never fails to work hard to satisfy every visitor's needs.

A visit to Savegre Mountain Hotel, always a high point of my trips, now offers superior facilities and services in an enchanted cloud forest environment.

Our room at Savegre was great - overlooking the garden, and at the back, overlooking the river. Big room with wood-burning fireplace with seating area, comfortable beds, good bathroom. Also a private seating area outside.

The birding is excellent as are the walks and hikes. The guides (Melvin and Raoul in our case) were great. We were surprised at how many people were on the trails without guides. First rule of Costa Rica: the guides are fantastic and make any walk memorable. Get a guide!

We were surprised that there weren't more birders there. We met some, but there were a lot of more general Costa Rica tours, with buses coming for one or two days so people could see quetzals then rush off. Most of the tours were fine - small, with people clearly on ecotours and respectful of the environment.

However, on our last day, American spring break began. The dining room (buffet style) turned into a high school cafeteria. Large groups of kids on the trail could be heard coming 10 minutes before they arrived and 10 minutes after they stormed passed us. DO NOT STAY HERE DURING SPRING/MARCH/SCHOOL BREAK.

This hotel is far, far away-- deep in the land of Resplendent Quetzals and Volcano Hummingbirds. There's a great trail along the river. Beautiful. You will need to eat here-- and the food is really quite good. Great coffee, of course--fun to sip coffee and watch the hummers at the feeders..

The rooms are fairly roomy, with a small couch and coffee table at one end. Beds are comfy enough. Clean.

Our friends were in the fireplace rooms (around room #135) which was great, but they were really, really smoky. If you have any sort of breathing problem, you should not get a fireplace. This wing of rooms is along the river-- so they have nice views.

Our room was #117. Do not take this room. It's right by a little bus pullout and our first morning, from 4am to 445am they were loading a bus... luggage, passengers, more passengers, missing passengers... all the while, they kept the bus running. for 45 minutes-- i'm not kidding. (wish i was.) We begged them to at least turn off the engine-- but no way. I am not a light sleeper at all-- but this was RIGHT outside our window... and the bigger problem was actually exhaust streaming straight into our room, full steam, for almost an hour. (48hours later, i was violently sick in bed all day with a migraine and it didn't dawn on me until i got home that they were surely connected.) It was really a nightmare. No sympathy at all in the office-- but it did not happen on the second morning.

This is a beautiful place on earth-- but my feelings about the hotel are marred by our morning experience. Too bad.

I went to Savegre with four friends during a week of birding around the country. Coming from San Jose along the Inter-American, we made an hour long stop at Paraiso del Quetzal to view the fiery-throated hummingbirds before turning off on the road to San Gerardo de Dota. This lovely valley high in the cloud forest is a remote, quiet piece of paradise.

Savegre Mountain Lodge exceeded our expectations - large, clean, modern cabins up the hill, huge bathroom (tub with rocks and candles on side), excellent food in the restaurant, friendly and helpful staff.

This is the best spot in the country to view quetzals and each day they could be found in the trees outside of our cabin. We booked Melvin for a 1/2 day birding tour and had a great day hiking along the stream with him.

There are numerous species of hummingbirds at the lodge feeders and we spent hours sitting on the patio watching and photographing them.

November is the off season and there were very few guests during our stay so we often ordered meals off the menu. When a group did arrive, meals were then buffet style with a very good selection.

This is a wonderful place to explore the high altitude cloud forest and I will return!

I stayed at Savegre Mountain Hotel for 4 days/3 nights. I was with my wife and her parents. We each had our own cabin suite; ours with two double beds and the in-laws with a king. We had chosen the all inclusive package that included our meals. Accommodations were good. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Cabins could be a little chilly at night if you are used to a room temp of 73 deg F or above. However, each cabin had a great fireplace and a plug-in heater. Food was buffet style and was also good, but not great. The lodge and grounds were beautiful and the birding was fabulous. The men who attended the reception desk were very friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful guide on two occasions, Melvin, who was fantastic. We would have never seen the number of birds we had seen if not for him. Long story short, we all had a wonderful time hiking and birding and recommend Savegre for the same.

We drove to Savegre Mountain hotel to and from San Jose for a 2 night stay prior to our return for the third time, to Lapa Rios Ecolodge at the far southwest of Costa Rica. The goal at Savegre was to photograph the holy grail bird of Central American birding, the resplendent quetzal. ( Bird and wildlife photography is my excuse to get outdoors, photograph colorful and interesting wildlife and hike about in rain forests, jungles and other natural venues.) The drive to Savegre was 2.5 hours as advertised, but for getting lost in Cartago(which is closer to San Jose than it is to savegre), the slow moving trucks and the general lack of signage on Costa Rican streets and highways. Instead of a low key lodge with a few cabins(the former name was Cabinas Chacon) we were greeted by a nicely designed, much expanded and updated spa like retreat, set tastefully among well planned and kept grounds that led to trails and detours that begged to be explored. We found the rooms to be modern, clean and designed with a rustic aesthetic that fit nicely with the cool evenings and spring like days. The food in the restaurant was good, frequently excellent, and the staff were incredibly friendly, thoughtful and helpful. Papa Chacon , a living legend in Costa Rica, was a constant presence and we enjoyed hearing his take on matters local and otherwise. But we made this weekend detour for birds-one in particular, which i had come to believe was guaranteed to be present. To insure and guarantee a photo of said bird, I engaged the services of one of the 11 Chacon offspring-resident birder/naturalist/conversationalist Marino Chacon. Emily and I spent a day and a half birding with him and enjoyed every minute.Marino is exceedingly enthusiastic and is highly recommended for anyone interested in birding-whether a novice or experienced "twitcher".Photographing quetzals became a ho hum deal at Savegre after 2 hours' effort, (see sample photo attached)and Marino was able to put us on other birds we had hoped to see and photograph. Savegre is not a 5 star luxe resort by any means, but is comfortable, well run and in an incomparable setting.(It is at 7500 or so feet, so if altitude bothers you, I recommend a course of Diamox to offset headaches and other ill effects).I am happy to offer further details and suggestions and my general two cents' worth about Savegre to anyone contemplating a visit there-simply contact me through the Trip Advisor link. If you want to see some of the best of the Costa Rican cloud forest, see quetzals and other colorful birds or hike along the streams and on the trails there, while being well fed in comfortable surroundings, I highly recommend Savegre .

We stayed at the Savegre Mountain Hotel. It was wonderful. We were with a tour group that set up all of our activities for us, however the lodge itself has numerous activities and will help plan and arrange them for you. The birdwatching was terrific.
