Spent 3 nights at Savegre Hotel and it was fantastic. The cabin/Lodge was beautiful and the surrounding grounds were magnificent. The food was good at all meals and the bar was great and had good prices. Watching the humming birds was fun fun fun. Walking the river was worth the entire trip. Do take a jacket; it gets chilly up there.

This hotel was a big disappointment. The gardens were very nice and the surrounding trails good for walking, birdwatching and flora and fauna. We found the service to be poor, staff knowledge was lacking and the room was a great disappointment. The twin room had reasonable beds, but the bathroom was hardly bigger than a broom cupboard, there was no plug in the small washbasin and the shower was icecold at 9.30pm after a 14 hour day of activity in the surrounding forest and paramo.
The starter choice at dinner was good, but the main course was appalling. A bottle of ordinary wine cost US$32, and a small bottle of beer was US$4.50
The management seem to be relying on the fact that they have got a combination of a great location, alongside a captive audience of birdwatchers from Europe and the USA who will put up with a poor quality of accommodation, food and service because there is not much else to choose from in the immediate vicinity

Room Tip: Don`t be too surprised if the shower is cold. Bring a travel plug for the washbasin

There is no doubt that the Savegre Mountain Lodge is in a beautiful setting, surrounded by beautiful birds. We spent 4 nights here in a basic room with our friends next door.

We enjoyed the trails (Sendero La Quebrada was spectacular) and the hummingbird feeders were always kept full of sugar and thus always hopping! The plantings around the lodges were wonderful too.

We still rate our experience as very good, but the basic room was only okay with a cold water sink, so-so towels and furnishings, and barely-adequate portable space heaters. The early morning coffee station for birders is a nice touch, but lacking one morning in enough coffee and another morning in milk.

The food was good, not great. The salad bar and deserts were really good, but the main courses and breakfasts mediocre.

One last good note - your odds of seeing a Quetzal here are near 100% if you hire a guide.

We had a 5 hour journey to this hotel from Monteverde with an excellent driver with good English. We arrived just after lunch and quickly got the impression that this is where the serious bird watchers aim to be. The grounds were lovely and the reception staff very helpful. We had a junior suite at this location which was very spacious with lovely views of the gardens. We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring and watching the humming birds on their feeders. The bar area was very pleasant with a central fire which made it welcoming. We sampled our first Tika Sour from the bar, the local cocktail which was delicious. All meals here are served buffet style and on our first night was very disappointing when comparing it with the other lodges/hotels we had stayed at. Our guide, Melvin, who collected us at 7 the next morning, was absolutely brilliant and gave us a really wonderful day. He knew exactly where to go to find the Quetzal and in fact we saw 3. We spent the morning in the national park on the mountain where we saw so many species of birds and with Melvin's telescope, lazer pen and bird noises on his mobile phone, the birds seemed to come to us. Had lunch at the hotel, the one occasion during our stay that lunch was not a buffet but a restricted menu which was actually quite poor.

In the afternoon Melvin took us along the river to see many other birds and animals, as well as sharing his considerable knowledge of the plants and trees. We told him we were disappointed with the food as we would prefer the option to have proper Costa Rican food. He then telephoned the chef and when we went into dinner we were given a delicious meal of rice and beans, chicken, fried egg, fried plantain, etc. This was so much better than the European buffet they were endeavouring to provide. Be warned this location is some 7,000 ft above sea level and is chilly to say the least. In our opinion if we had not had Melvin as our guide we wouldn't have enjoyed our time at this hotel nearly as much. Now ready to go down to the coast for some warm weather.

The bar/lounge area appeared to be a newer addition and was nice, the grounds were beautiful, and the reception area was pleasant.

We stayed in a 'standard room' that had a small sink with only cold water, small shower, threadbare towels and linen, musty smell, a portable electric heater, and depressing furnishings. I did look at some 'suites' and they appeared newer and better.

The restaurant served edible but poor cafeteria food at $30 per meal for dinner - bland and uninspired. By contrast we stayed at another lodge in this valley for an excellent experience and less money. Savegre Lodge was the most disappointing stay of an eighteen day Costa Rican journey.

Room Tip: Paying more for a "suite" may help; stay away from the 'standard rooms' but there...

This hotel has a mountain setting at an elevation of 8500 ft. Our room had it's own fireplace with wood and accelerator gel. Serious bird watchers come here and gather in the hotel lounge at night to notate their bird journals. Meals are included buffet style and there is a magnificient salad and dessert bar. The hotel owners own a trout farm and have fish as one of the selections every evening. Birds abound with hummingbird feeders around the property. We went out on a hike to the waterfall, and after we passed the trout farm, a pair of Quetzals appeared in a tree near where 3 nesting boxes had been placed for their use. What a resplendent sight! We watched for nearly an hour while they took turns flying to the nest to feed their young. The male Quetzal had a 4 ft. long tail which did not fit in the nesting box, so it waved in the breeze as he regurgitated his food into his offsprings' beaks. On the way back from the waterfall, we saw the pair again on the other side of the trail eating insects from a dead tree. The hotel, the flowers, the birds - Magnificient!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a fireplace since temperatures drop down into the high 40 degrees fahrenheit at...

I stayed here for two nights with a tour group. It is a beautiful drive to Savegre Lodge high up in the cloud forest. Although the actual Savegre Lodge (and others) is located down a long and steep gravel road. We stayed in the standard rooms, which were of a very good size. The bathroom was reasonable size, hot water and hairdryer. Given the high altitude it is very cold at night, and in the older rooms, there is only one small heater. (no heating in the bathroom so keep the door closed!!) There are chairs outside the main door facing the beautiful well kept gardens. The main buiding houses the large restaurant - all meals are buffet style with plenty of choice (food was delicious, service very good), coffee/tea available from early morning. There is a seating area outside so you can watch the hummingbirds as they bicker over who's turn it is to drink at the feeders! There is a good sized bar (happy hour is 4-6 daily), and there is a fire burning. Expect to get up early to find the Resplendant Quetzal - (as in pre-breakfast,a nd wrap up warm) and then upon success (some more than others) you can relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings walking/birdwatching for the rest of your stay. This may be in the cloud forest, but we had warm sunshine during the daytime. I treated myself to a massage at the spa - a seperate building, good facilities which didn't appear to be used often - buy a treatment get use of the sauna/steam room/ jacuzzis or use them on their own. A wonderful place to stay, remember your binoculars and camera!
