“Awesome trails”
Reviewed January 30, 2013

The hotel is located deep in the valley, so prepare your car to go 800m down from the main road which is at elevation of 2900m. We spent 2 nights in Savegre which was pretty enough, because mornings and nights were cold indeed.

The food in the restaurant was plentiful and delicious. Room has nice wooden interior and big bathroom. Heater in the room was a great solution when feeling cold.

Most of the time we spent walking along the scenic trails. Trail to the waterfall was amazing and a bit of challenge. The grounds of the hotel are lovely, with lot of flowers and trees, avocado tree, and full of various birds singing their songs.

Savegre hotel is is in a beautiful location in the mountains. The road down from the pan-american highway is steep and twisty. You can make it with an ordinary car but a four wheel drive is more appropriate. There are several trails in the area, some shorter and some more challenging. The area is very good for bird watching. We hired a guide through the hotel reception. He was very nice and knowledgeable and helped us to spot many birds including the quetzal.

There are not many places to eat in the area so we had all meals at the hotel. The breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets were all very good. We had a family room for four persons. It was basic but ok except for the bathroom, which was in great need of renovation. The beds were a bit too hard to our taste.

Mornings and evening were a bit chilly so bring an extra sweater. There was a small heater in the room that we could use to stay warm during the nights.

All in all a great experience at the Savgre Hotel.

Summary: great place if you like birdwatching, but others likely would be less impressed.

Last week we spent 3 nights here and came for its justifiable reputation for birdwatching. Though the total number of birds in the area is not very great, there is a high percentage of endemic species. The gardens are beautiful, and a highlight were the always-filled hummingbird feeders by the main office which regularly attract several species of hummingbirds.

The buffet meals were very good, though relatively expensive per Costa Rica standards at US $20 per person per meal.

We did a half-day (morning) birdwatching tour with a guide Marino who took us on La Quebrada Trail, a pretty dirt trail in the woods that in part goes by a small stream. There are also many small side trails. Marino is excellent at identifying the birds and very enthusiastic and makes a special effort to have us see each bird.

We later do the night tour and though we do find the Dusky Nightjar and Bare-Shanked Screech-Owl, we find this less rewarding. On a previous trip to Costa Rica we had done the night tour at Monteverde which revealed numerous types of wild life, whereas the night tour here is only for birds, and there aren't many that one can find in the night.

The staff were always courteous and very helpful. The area is very beautiful, with large hills nearby and a mountain stream going right by the hotel, but there's little to do in the area except for birdwatching.

I have been here three times over the last decade or so. It is amazing to see how it has grown and evolved. It is a great place for birders and nature lovers. It is quite remote, in keeping with its focus as a cloud-forest eco-destination, and a challenge to drive to. An 8 km drive takes about 35 minutes. The food is fine, served buffet-style. You can always find something to satisfy you, especially at the dessert table. If you are a novice birder, it is worthwhile to go with a guide (extra fee) so you can spot the many beautiful creatures that live in this special place. Recently they added a full-service spa, and a lovely lounge area, as well as a new terrace. The staff is terrific, warm and friendly and always looking to help you. However, some of the rooms really need to be updated, so check before you book.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the newer rooms.

San Gerardo De Dota, Costa Rica is a special place in Costa Rica, but also in the Americas, or even in the world.
It is an ecological marvel, with its founders having a vision of what they want for their future. Meeting the owner, Efraín Chacón was a special treat. Everything is green. It is Spring Time year around, with flowers, birds, the famous quetzal, and water.

To keep things this pristine they have a road in and out that is one lane with very rough gravel for 10 miles and has an altitude change of 2500 feet.

Our rooms were cabin groups of four. We were in a room in the middle, in the far border of the Lodge property.
The room was well appointed and comfortable and clean. However the pillows were not at all full and the bedding was old and rough.

The bathroom was large, with a enormous shower. Unfortunately, the shower came on when one turned on the water with no way to control it.
During the day, the room was warm, lots of thermal heating.
When night came, the room cooled and by bedtime the room was 60 degrees with a space heater full blast.
With such an environmental emphasis to use a space heater is so counter productive.
The room also had a small desk and chair, not enough room for my wife and me to prepare our reports that we had to submit every night.

Our walk to the our transportation, the dining room and reception was 5 to 10 minutes. In the daytime, this was fine, but at night the dark walk from the lodge through the parking lot and over the bridge was pitch black - very unsafe.
The walk was great as we saw all of nature around us.

The dining room serve great food in buffet style.
There was a salad counter in the middle and a dessert area by one of the windows.
The bar was the location for the meetings.

Everyone in the staff was very friendly and available.
After one day most knew us by first name.

The one issue I had was the lack of internet.
It was available at the bar ONLY.
As I need to file my reports to the USA every night after 9PM, this was very difficult.
With the money spent on this hotel, why not have multiple Wi-Fi connections throughout the bar, restaurant, reception, in the least.
What made it so much worse was the speed.
Wi-Fi is dependent on the number of people trying to access.
When people were in the bar with their iPads, computers, phones, etc. it was worse than dial-up.
When no one was present, it was still slow.
On a whim, I checked with Speakeasy Speed Test and found that my download was .712 MBPS and upload was at .24 MBPS.
I could not send SMALL videos to the USA.

Room Tip: As all cabins are remote, check where yours is located on the master map at reception. Walking is g...

The trip along the unpaved road through this narrow valley is incredibly beautiful, and the lodge, located by a rushing river in the valley, is a lovely place. Amazing bar with a freestanding fireplace, beautiful restaurant with an excellent buffet, small gift shop, a spa we didn't try, and rooms with either a fireplace, wood and fire starter cubes or an electric heater. We finally got a roaring fire going, which was really nice. The next day we did actually see a quetzal, albeit far away. I'd really recommend a local guide for this, since they can spot the most likely places near their favorite trees, all of which do not produce fruit at the same time of year. I would have loved to spend more time here. Rainbow trout is a specialty of the region.

We stayed during October at the hotel in a junior suite and everything was wonderful. The service and food were very good. The only thing is that we traveled with an old person that had difficulties to walk so it was difficult for her to get a shower because it was inside of a tub. The hotel should warn people traveling with elderly or disabled this limitation.
