“Unique experience”

I initially planned few days and I ended up staying nearly 2 weeks. Maratua is one of the last paradise on earth, the nature speaks for himself and Jun well knows that. He is keen in creating in combining its dream without upsetting the surrounding nature. Do not expect full moon party or karaoke at night, the Nature has its own rules and if you decide to visit you need to comply with them.
The location is very nice and it overlooks the west side where you can enjoy the sunset and see below turtles or other tropical fish.
The all island is mainly made by coral, however the guest house has currently access to 2 sandy beach where you often are alone.
Accomodation is good, main huts have european toilet and a proper shower and sink, despite in Indonesia they're not common in remote areas.
Beds are nice and comfortable, they are equipped of mosquito net and fan.
The restaurant is good as well, Jun is a great chef, however due to the lack of frequent transport to the mainland the choice of dishes is quite limited to what is available, which always include excellent fresh fish.
The overall place is clean and quite I would recomend it to people who intent to appreciate the nature.

“garbage on the beach, many turtles, old accommodation”
Reviewed October 23, 2013

We had a lot of turtles and that's was very interesting for our kids but we wont recommend to go here. There are too many garbage on the beach and the accommodation was rather old and dirty. We also need to go by boat a bit far to go to jellyfish island, maybe its better to stay in maratua island, less garbage there.

“Maratua An Earthly Paradise”
Reviewed October 16, 2013

I thought I was at Maldives! No, I was at Borneo Island, Maratua.
The sand was very white and it had its own pattern. The sea water was so crystal. But, we couldn't eat at the resort restaurant since it only open for people who stayed in their resort. Luckily, the speedboat driver took us to the villages near the resort. There, we ate the best fried fish ever, so fresh. But, unlike beaches around Maratua resort which was so beautiful, the beaches around the villages was full of scattered broken glass and woods. So, be careful, wear your sandals/shoes always when you walk around the beaches. Overall, it is still a paradise to me. I wish I could go back to this island some day and stayed in Maratua resort.

“Ferangutans”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

We just got back from this region. Tourism is definitely in it's infancy here. Derawan Island and its welcoming population can be enchanting if you can ignore the burning piles of plastic bottles and used nappies in the sea.
Maratua Island is a different story. We had that 'we've found it' feeling when we finally got there. We stayed at a brand new place called the Maratua Guest House run by a great guy called Jun. He cooked the best food we'd had all trip (try his fish currys) and lent us his moped to get around (the only form of transport on the island). The dining area looks out over incredible ocean sunsets and the giant green turtles that swim below. The huts are nestled in the forest behind, the rooms are very comfortable with a fan and the toilet and shower are very modern.
As you ride around the island you will be greeted by wide eyed villages. You definitely get the impression that they have not seen many of your kind before. The only disappoinment was to discover a huge airport runway being constructed there. I think Maratua and the delicious people living there are about to get a shock. I'm concerned Maratua might go the way of Derawan....

“Maratua Guesthouse - Maratua Island”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

I stayed at Maratua Guesthouse with a group of friends in September 2013 and we all loved it. Before we even arrived, Guesthouse staff were so helpful in assisting us with information on the area and how to get there. On arrival, the staff, particularly Jun, helped us with every request and question – planning day trips to nearby islands (including packed lunches), snorkelling, diving and a range of other activities on Maratua.
Accommodation is cute, clean and comfortable, and located in quiet forest settings. The restaurant food is really good, catering to a range of tastes and preferences (Indonesian and western). The view from the restaurant balcony is stunning, with turtles regularly swimming by. The beach in front of the restaurant is also gorgeous, and has great snorkelling (more turtles!) just offshore.
While it does take a bit of effort to get to Maratua, it is well worth the effort for access to such amazing beaches, top quality snorkelling/diving, swimming and relaxation. Jun and his staff are very knowledgeable and helpful in arranging transport to and from the island. I thoroughly recommend Maratua Guesthouse and hope to visit again soon!
