“Nice hotel, good food and service, poor child care.....”
Reviewed February 27, 2011

We travelled in half term week with 4 families and associated children ranging in age from 19 months to 8 years on a package through Crystal.

Pros:
We received great service in the restaurant and bar(s), the rooms were a very good size and had stunning views over the valley. Food was great (and abundant) and wine well priced. (Lunch for family of 4 was €40-€55). The spa and pool were also excellent and the golf simulators a refreshing post ski family/group alternative activity.

Cons:
For a family hotel this just didn't work for our group. The crèche facilities were poor (in comparison to previous Austrian hotels) and consisted of 2 "nannies" in a small poorly equipped room who supervised the non-skiing children but provided little entertainment for them; result, bored toddlers who would not stay and parents who had to give up skiiing time to look after children....

For the skiing children there was an additional charge of €18 per child to take them to ski school (100m from hotel), collect them at 12 for lunch and return them to ski school at 2. Previous hotels in Austria have provided this service as standard. We also had a serious incident when our children were left alone at the bottom of the lift without being handed over to their ski instructor resulting in the ever eager 7 and 8 year olds thinking it OK to go up the mountain on their own.....

As a family hotel the lack of acceptable child care facilities is simply unacceptable and a major flaw in what was otherwise a very nice hotel.

I Stayed five days at the Hotel Riml in Hochgurgl. Allready from the arrival the service was a pleasure. The car was taken care of and and parked in a closed garage, bags was carried to the room and a welcome drink was served.
I stayed in a Double Room on the north side, overlooking the Ötztal valley. The room was nice, quite big and very clean. There was both bathtub and shower. Only minus was the slight distant noise from the Afterski bar below the room, but I didnt find that it was annoying to me at any point. Wifi acces was free of charge, to acces you needed to obtain a ticket from the reception .In the hotel there was a ski storage with a separate locker for each room.

Breakfeast and dinner were included in the room rate. Breakfeast was served from a rich buffet, with almost everything you could ask for. Dinner was served at your table. The dinner menu consisted of 4-5 courses every night with a choice of at least two soups and 3 main courses (meat, fish and vegetarian). Food quality was god and the staff was very kind and observant too the guests needs. Drinks were paid for seperately by signing a reciept before leaving the table and charged on the hotel credit system. At the departure all the signed reciepts were stapled to the bill, so there was no confusion.

The hotel had a very nice wellness and pool area overlooking the town and valley. Of other indoor activities there was golfsimulators in connection to the in-hotel After-Ski bar.

Skipass was provided in the reception. The Intersport Rentalshop was located in connection to the Hotel. The shop also sold different equipment, and had a small section with different magazines, soft drinks and snacks and personal hygiene items. Be aware that there are no grochery shop in Hochgurgl!

The Hotel was rigth at the slopes which was accessed by climbing a narrow steel staircase. Skiing in Hochgurl/Obergurgl, was a great experience. Snow and piste conditions were extremely god, due to cold weather and the high altitude. There were no queues at the lifts, and the area didn´t at any time feel crowded.

Hochgurgl is perfect for relaxation and are very quiet. If you are looking for party and afterskiing you would need to go somewhere else! I found the area perfect for my needs and I did not miss the afterskiing experience.

Best location, excellent facilities (aside from the rather voyeuristic spa area!), and amaxing food. Thanks to the Riml family, great time.

Before you ask the answer will be " for sure, no problem." from the bell boy to the Boss that is the answer! ski in, ski out, could not get much closer to the snow. Hire all your gear from the on-site Ski shop, all new hire stuff each year, collect your lift pass from reception and your gone, that easy. Rooms perfect, very clean bright and airy. Refreshingly Stylish and smart and that was just the starter, the half board food was a culinary delight, all enjoyed with a superb wine list. Not forgetting the indoor golf, play on any of the world's best courses while sipping a cool beer. Not only the highest 4 star but the BEST 4 star in the Alps! The Spa and swimming pool ....pure luxury after a day on the slopes.

The only complaint I would have is that the hotel is to hot ( well I do live in Ireland! )

I will be back DC

Had a fantastic week at this hotel. We went with our one year old baby and the hotel were very accommodating regarding his food needs. We utilized the hotel nursery, nanny very friendly and seemed capable. Swimming pool too cold for a little one but he had good fun crawling around it. As long as you are not looking for a night life would recommend for excellent skiing conditions, good food, excellent spa (as long as you're ok with mixed nudity!) and friendly staff.

We have just returned from a weeks skiing holiday staying at the Riml. We booked through Inghams skiing holidays as part of a package but also emailed the hotel direct before we arrived to clarify our requirements. I received a very prompt reply saying all had been understood and would be actioned.

We arrived just before lunch and were greeted by Frau Riml bearing a tray of sparkling wine to welcome us and orange juice for our two boys. The hotel is family owned and run and this standard of service was to continue for the whole week.

As good as their word, we had been given two interconnecting double rooms with south facing balconies. Each room had Austrian double beds (a double bed with single mattresses and duvets) with bed side tables and a sitting area with sofa, sofa bed and table. There was ample cupboard and drawer space for storage. The Balcony was accessed through large picture windows and had two deck chairs for enjoying the sun. A perfectly good en-suite bathroom with bath, powerful over bath shower with a good screen rather than a flappy curtain, wash basin and WC. All toiletries were provided along with bathrobes and slippers.

There are a number of dining areas but we were allocated a table in one of the Stuberl type restaurants. The main dining room is bright and airy in the day and nicely candle lit at night. The main buffet area is off this. there are also various stuberl around the ground floor which are cosier or more romantic. All serve the same food/menu which was quite fantastic. A set 7 course menu with choices for each course and a selection of salads from the buffet. They had themed nights on several occasions with Italian, French and traditional Austrian nights. The food was quite delicious and could not be faulted. A children's menu was also provided, which was only three courses and essentially a simplified version of the adult. Our two boys of 10 & 12 often mixed and matched the two. They could have eaten earlier at 6.00pm if they had wished but they are now of an age that they want to stay up with the adults and are developing a quite sophisticated taste.

There is an excellent wellness area which includes a fair sized swimming pool along with a spa pool. There are also saunas, ice rooms, sun beds and massage areas. The latter are in the nude area so with two youngsters in tow we hardly ventured in. There is also a play room, pool tables and a video games arcade all tucked away down in the cellar so they do not intrude on the hotel atmosphere. There are also excellent ski and boot storage rooms down in the cellar along with access down to the hotel owned ski hire shop. Special mention should be made of the indoor golf range and putting area along with the "Putt - In" Bar. This is an excellent facilities with video driving ranges and a 9 hole putting course. The 19th hole is right there with table service as you drive!!

I was in the unfortunate position of incurring a skiing injury on my second day so my skiing was cut short. The hotel were excellent at assisting both my wife and I with the aftermath , contacting doctors, surgeries, etc and provided ice packs and appropriate room service on demand.

My one outstanding impression was how friendly and efficient all the staff were without exception. They all made an effort to get to know us and our likes and dislikes and were quite happy to go the "extra mile" to see we had an excellent relaxed time. We were sorry to leave - even with one of us on crutches - and would definitely return.

  • Liked — Excellent friendly service but not over bearing.
  • Disliked — No Tea & Coffee making facilities in the room.

I've just returned from a fantastic family holiday at The Riml.

Location: the highest hotel in Hochgurgl with easy access to the lifts.

Staff: all friendly, english speaking & very efficient.

Facilities: had 2 bed apartment with lots of space & ++storage. large bedrooms & spacious lounge with big balcony.
Lovely spa area (nude, but you soon get used to it) smallish pool, virtual golf (££). The food was a highlight for us. Several courses, beautifully presented with plenty of choice. I could see that it would be hard for small children to sit through several courses, but my older ones loved trying everything. Good wine list too. There are massage/beauty treatments but I didn't try them.

Skiing: fantastic resort for all but the most advanced skier. Plenty of off piste powder, we were lucky. I imagine it would be a bit bleak & cold in Dec/Jan as it is so high.

What made it for us was the incredible efficientcy of the Austrains. No queues for anything- lift passes, lifts, loos or lunches. It makes for such an easy holiday.

Would highly recommend the Riml for a family holiday.

  • Liked — The wonderful food & the efficient Astrians
  • Disliked — The pool was busy early mornings & smoking allowed near eating areas
