“A Jewel”
Reviewed May 25, 2013

We have just returned from a most memorable stay at the beautifully restored manor house, Kerledan. Our stay was without doubt our most memorable and pleasurable of our four chosen Alastair Sawday recommended places to stay in Brittany.

On arrival, Peter and Penny greeted us at our car with umbrella at the ready as it was raining and help to carry our bags into their most delightful home. Fresh flowers and antiques adorn the exquisite reception room with large comfortable sofas and beautiful fabrics throughout. Penny has a great flair for soft furnishings and colours.

We chose to take dinner each evening as after our first night, where just the two of us dined on sorrel (from the garden) soup followed by monkfish wrapped in Parma ham served on baby fresh vegetables from the garden with dauphinoise potatoes. For our dessert we enjoyed Eaton Mess and coffee. The dining experience was consistent throughout our stay. A good selection of wine was also available at very reasonable price. All this in front of a roaring log fire. A menu to set the taste buds alight.

Guests are invited for pre dinner drinks and nibbles and to mingle with their fellow diners with Peter being attentive whilst Penny is putting last minute touches to our gourmet dinner.

Peter is to be found tending their beautiful garden on our return each day after exploring the beautiful Brittany coastline. There are many interesting places to visit each day whatever your interests are.

Penny makes her own preserves, which are part of a fabulous spread at breakfast. Her cooking skills are second to none, inventive, flavoursome and using vegetables from the garden wherever possible.

Our bedroom was a delight, with the most comfortable bed imaginable. The bathroom beautiful with bath and shower.

Penny and Peter ensured our stay was perfect in every way. We had originally booked for two nights, but stayed for four and will definitely return again and again!

We cannot express sufficiently well the the pleasure of staying at the Manoir de Kerledan. We spent three days celebrating our 40th anniversary and could not find fault in any way. The welcome and care shown by Peter and Penny was perfect as was the room /bathroom. The evening meals, cooked by Penny and, on one night, her daughter Hannah were a delight.
It must be mentioned that we were greeted on arrival and our return each day with "I've just put the kettle on", just what the English traveller likes to hear.

We stayed one week for a late holiday last October at Le Manoir as a base to explore Western Brittany (Finisterre) which although we’re frequent visitors to France, we’d never previously ventured that far West. As always, we trusted Tripadvisor reviews to choose Le Manoir which was a no-brainer as the only hotel / B&B we’d ever seen where every reviewer had awarded 5 stars.

Well, here’s another 5 stars as we found Le Manoir and their hosts Penny and Peter to be every bit as charming as described. Carhaix-Plouguer is centrally located to reach either the North, West or South coasts within an hour for which our hosts provided a list of the best places to visit and were only too pleased to help us choose which ones and the best routes.

Above all we really enjoyed the unusual experience of communal dining with other guests of different nationalities, ages and backgrounds. Since we normally choose hotels or gites, we are accustomed to dining out by ourselves or with family but noted that Penny is a very good cook and happy to provide meals on request which we’d assumed would be the exception rather than the norm which we hoped we might be able to arrange on one or two evenings.
However, since ours was a late holiday, we found our opportunities to dine out were limited so we were very grateful that we could dine in most evenings and really enjoyed Penny’s (and her daughter’s) superb cooking in an elegant dining room (and fire burning in a huge hearth which was very welcome even in early October). Breakfasts included their own and other delicious produce sourced locally of which Penny kindly ordered us a cheese to bring home with us.

Our only apprehension of it being more of a B&B than a hotel proved to be unfounded as Penny and Peter achieved the very difficult balancing act of being both attentive without being intrusive throughout our stay, offering tea and home-made cakes as soon as we set foot in the door after each day’s excursion.

So a big thank you to Penny and Peter for making our stay so enjoyable in spite of the weather which unfortunately was typical of a very wet 2012’

My husband and I stayed here after our wedding, with 8 of our friends. Everything about the Manoir de Kerledan is elegant, the bedrooms are beautifully decorated, the food is excellent, (both dinner and breakfast) and the owners, Penny and Peter are, quite simply, the perfect hosts. We had stayed the year before for my birthday, and thought then that it would be the best place to have a small wedding reception for ourselves and our friends, and we were not disappointed. We will most certainly be back, very soon. A very, very special place indeed.

Like many other guests we found the owners, Penny & Peter, to be perfect hosts. We ate most nights and the food was outstanding. The property has a lovely location and was a great base for walking, swimming (in the nearby public pool) an visiting other parts of Finistere.

I really can't believe this is the same place that others have reviewed. Our experience was such a disappointment. From the description in the guide book we expected a lovely home with comfortable bedrooms and superb cooking ("Legendary Suppers") At the time we did not realise that the guide book entry was written by the owners. We found the decor tacky and the rooms and bedding none too clean, the room we had was small and the bathroom cold and most certainly not luxurious. To be fair, the first night's supper, shared with a lovely French family, was good but we were the only guests on the second night and the food was not of an acceptable standard. Penny and Peter have certainly worked very hard transforming a run down old house and garden but they still have a long way to go to live up to their own opinion of themselves.

We are very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us.

However, we are rather confused by your comments as we cannot find a record of your stay with us in May 2012 or of any complaints made to us directly. We appreciate that everyone has different tastes and views and we will never tick all the boxes for every person, however, we strive to provide a high standard of country house accommodation at reasonable prices. We hope our guests leave us as friends, to be welcomed back time and again. Many do.

We can assure you that we have NOT had any input to any of the reviews or to the various inspected guide books that report on us. These are their own views not ours and are totally independent.

All our rooms are refreshed and cleaned daily with heated towel rails in all bathrooms.

Our four-night stay was an absolute delight. English hosts Peter and Penny have done a wonderful job restoring this French manoir, and provide a truly personal welcome. It is full of character, beautifully decorated and furnished, very comfortable bedrooms, and super breakfast served in a most elegant manner. The gardens are restful and full of interest. For a hundred euros bed & breakfast it was excellent value. We were not surprised to learn that The Times Travel Section (Saturday, 14 July 2012) said it was the best B&B in Brittany. We will certainly be back, and hope to sample some evening meals. A really special place!
