A fantastic day out in the Lot Valley would really not be complete without a visit here. Prehistoric cave paintings make this a very special place.
Great for families or just couples, well worth a visit.

Fascinating tour of the cave, both from an archeological and a geological perspective. Although the tour was in French; they provide non-speakers with a translation booklet to follow along. In addition, our guide made an extra effort to make sure that we did not miss anything, and would pull us forward to show us the highlights. A real treat! Do make a reservation (simple to do on-line), so that you don't have to wait around.

This was well run, and even though our Guide had only the two us that spoke English, she did give us a satisfactory explanation of this underground prehistoric series of caves.

The groups are fairly small in numbers which enables you to get a good look at everything.
We decided not to prebook even though it was early summer time and the lady at the entry gate was most helpful and let us join the next group.

Well worth a visit for the historic qualities and paintings. But the guide was clearly bored and could not have cared less about doing a good job of explaining the cave.

To understand where we come from and to awake one's imagination everybody shoud see at least one paleolitic cave with drawings and paintings. The most famous, Lascaux, can be visited only with special permisions but you can see the contemporary copies in Lascaux II. So to feel he atmoshpere of original prehistoric art it's best to go to Pech Merle. People who painted the animals and left their footprins in these cave where amazing artists. To catch the spirit of the animal and to show it with the simple sketch, sometimes with only one line, they must have been truly intelligent! That became a source of inspiration for XX-th century artists, like Kandinski or Max Ernst. The experience will be fantastic and unique also for you.
I recommend booking the tickets by Internet. It's for free, you pay when you collect tickets and you can avoid long cues and often dissapointments since the number of visitors is limited. Warm clothes is necessary. Taking pictures is not allowed at all, so don't bother to carry your camera, you will have to leave it outside anyway, so it's better to keep it in the car.
