“Absolutely stunning view, almost hard to believe.”

My friend and I stayed at Allan's Birdsong Villa last week during our last place we visited in Costa Rica. He is a hoot and a great host. We upgraded to the upstairs loft upon arrival, it was an easy decision. The inside of the loft is spacious and beautiful, and the bed is quite comfortable. It's an interesting space in that it's all very open, including the shower, which while being tucked away in the back part of the loft space, doesn't have a door, so there isn't a whole lot of privacy. Just tell people to stay in the main room while you shower and you'll be fine. The cook that comes in makes a great breakfast, and Allan is happy to offer advice on excursions. You definitely need a 4x4, the drive up there is pretty bumpy but fun in a twisted kind of way. Also, there is a great restaurant in walking distance down the hill called "Tres Cabras," my friend and I ate there one night because we literally ran out of options and didn't know where to eat, and it was lovely.

About the view, it's literally the most beautiful thing I've ever seen! It was almost hard to believe. You can see the lake, Arenal Volcano (which you can't climb up, but you can climb up the one next to it), and another big hill in front with lots of rainforest. We didn't get a chance to take the hike that is nearby as we climbed up the volcano you can climb up (located down the road, at the Arenal Observatory Park).

The only thing I would note, is if you are interested in having a very romantic getaway where you were never disturbed, keep in mind that the manager does live on the premises. Granted, my friend and I were very open to chatting and being friendly with him, as he is a great host, so it was no big deal to us. But if you are staying with a partner, you'd have to maintain a good sense of humor in that there might be some interruptions during your stay, such as the cook, though I suppose you could opt out of that perk. Since the layout is all open, there is no door between the main room and the kitchen. Otherwise, it was a beautiful place to stay, well worth the money, with a helpful and affable host.

This place is awesome - large, comfortable, incredible 270-degree views of jungle, lake, volcano. Host is extremely nice, helpful, good guy to be around. Breakfasts made in your room are really excellent. This is NOT like a hotel experience - this is not even quite a B&B experience - its almost like renting a house (with benefits). It is WAY off the beaten track/ It is QUIET (except for the birds and howler monkeys. You MUST rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle. It's about 40 minutes from the nearest large town of La Fortuna, about 30 minutes of which is on dirt roads that folks from the US would consider very rough. You REALLY don't want to try to make that drive at night for the first time. You really know you're not at home anymore.

Directions in Costa Rica tend to be a little sketchy - signs and directions tend to lack distance information. Suggest you get there with help from GPS. It's also difficult to put in addresses in many GPS systems, so use the lat/long coordinates:
Lat: N10.418061, Lon:W84.7431060

“Fabulous, total tranquility, spectacular views - this is a must if you want to get away from it all”

Birdsong is a "MUST" - a spectacular house perched high in the hills with panormaic views over the volcano and the lake. It is hard to imagine a better location. The views are quite breathtaking. If you want to get away from it all then this is the place to go - and yet it is only 30 mins by car from La Fortuna.
We stayed here in July 2013 as a family of 6 and loved every minute of it. you do need a car and the track is steep - but that adds to the excitement! Breakfast is included and is fabulous!!

“Beautiful Views”
Reviewed April 13, 2013 for a stay in February 2013

A very congenial host. The property, toucans, lake, and volcano are spectacular. We liked it so much we bought a lot next door. The road to Bird Song requires a four wheel drive unless you are like us, really dumb and adventurous to a fault. Next visit will be with a 4x4.

“Wonderful!!”

Our family of 6 - 4 kids ages 16,15,13 and 11 stayed at Allan's place for 2 nights and loved it. It is a long bumpy ride from the main road, but worth it if you would like to experience a beautiful, natural setting. Shortly after our arrival, Allan took us on a great hike to a waterfall and swimming hole which we had all to ourselves. We had a great time, climbing under and up the waterfall and then swimming in the creek. Later that night we sat out on the deck and heard, then saw Howler monkeys and many birds including toucans and parrots. Allan took us to Hotel Margot for a great buffet dinner which pleased even my picky eaters! We had a delicious breakfast the next morning and then took the short drive to ziplining at Sky Trek. After a day visiting La Fortuna and the hot springs we had one of the best meals I've ever had, prepared at the Villa by Allan's cooks for a very reasonable cost (although I would suggest modifying the quantity for kids). We rose early the next morning to catch more wild life and got to see more birds and a very accomodating toucan who sat in a tree and talked to us for several minutes. Allan is a wonderful host and his place is beautiful and comfortable. Our kids especially loved the outdoor shower that is also home to the resident parrot. I highly recommend staying at Bird Song, especially if you prefer to be away from the touristy areas.
