Did not have many alternatives here, but were positively surprised by quality of food (short focused menu helps here) and attentive service, so we went twice in as many days. Both fish and meat dishes were excellent - and the selection of top-end cognacs truly impressive. This being Norway do not expect this to be a budget meal, but here at least what you get may well be worth it.

We had a great dinner experience at Kast Loss with a group of 9 people, invluding kids. The food was very, very good - the deer medalions and veal were both great quality meats and cooked perfectly! Highly recommend it!

We chose this restaurant because of positive reviews (on tripadvisor). It seemed to be the best in Risør and has a good location.
A few tables were occupied when we arrived at about 7pm on a Tuesday. Candles were lit. The atmosphere was nice and the mock maritime decor works quite well.
The menu was a combination of standard Norwegian fare like pizzas and burgers with more eclectic choices like escargot and hare.
We asked for recommendations. The not-too-interested waitress suggested the halibut and the hare. We ordered those two dishes.
The wait was not too long.
The food, however, was disappointing.
Overcooked halibut drowned in store boight Bearnaise with soggy broccoli. Tough fillets of hare with liver flavour and a decent mushroom sauce. Even the plentiful potatoes were disappointing and overcooked.
Maybe it's better during the summer?

Kast Loss restaurant have had a new management during the last year. They have gradually improved the service and some of the interior. They have kept the nice maritime elements from the past. The restaurant serves a limited a ’la carte menu with both local fish and game. The food was well prepared and very tasty. During the last months I have had several meals there and they have all been to my satisfaction. Price level on the wines are on the lower end referring to Norwegian pricelevel.
They have also a nice floating restaurant outside serving a good selection of beers and drinks.
