We spent 7 nights at the lodge and it didn't disappoint! The staff is so helpful and they welcome you with open arms! We would have wished that we had booked a car but they were so kind to give us a ride to tamarindo or otherwise they would arrange taxis for us. They have a very sweet dog and a cat so it's a plus if you like pets! We can highly recommend El Sabanero - we would love to go back another time! Oh, and Donald makes an excellent mahi mahi dish!

Things to improve: maybe some yoghurt and freshly baked bread for breakfast would be nice, it takes 10 minutes to make the dough in the afternoon and the bread can be put in the oven in the morning? It would be a good idea to hang op a bus schedule for those without a car and maybe write a note with the taxi prices to the different beaches and towns.

Stay warm down there, we enjoyed our stay! hope to see you again!

Lars & Camilla

We spent our first 7 nights in Costa Rica at the JW Marriott Resort. We thought that making the transition to an "Eco Lodge" might be difficult. It was NOT! We were met at our car by Donald (more to come) who got us squared away, even taking our luggage to our hillside cabin. While the room was spare, we grew into it by that night, taking in the intention of being in the country (more than at just another man-made luxury "resort").

The grounds are clean, and the food DELICIOUS (the aforementioned Donald is also the evening chef). Breakfast was good too. As we took in the views (horses and cattle below, and there is an ancient volcano across the small valley) sitting on our homey front porch, and after taking walks along the road amongst "the people", we truly felt like we were experiencing the true Costa Rica.

Lastly, the owner Kurt is a delightful man and responsive host. Tell him what you need and he does his best to accommodate quickly. If you are looking for a quiet getaway with friendly guests, affordable lodging and great service, this is the place to go. We will again!

Room Tip: If you want to hear/see Howler Monkeys in the morning, ask for a cabin on that side of the property.

Great place to kick back and relax, if you want to. I went for a week of family vacation after so many years we did not take one. While they did not have room for us the day we wanted to arrive, they arranged for us to stay at a nearby B&B. It was totally hassle-free. Kurt, the owner, is very polite and always there if you need him, but always respectful of your privacy. The cabins have a small refrigerator, that is great to keep your beer cold. It is 10 minutes away from Tamarindo, and just a little longer from many other beaches that you will want to visit. Would surely go back, great value for the price.

The place its just amazing... Its located on a hillside near Tamarindo beach (one of the top 10 beaches in Costa Rica) Driving its only 4 hours from main Airport (SJO) at capital city (San Jose) or 1 hour from Liberia Airport (LIR). As you drive towards the hotel you'll begin to fall in love with the surroundings, the landscape, the nature!!! Everything looks green and the Sabana its just outstanding!! but the best part is hotel's staff beginning with Donald, the manager and his Dog April (which I particullary named "coyotiina" 'cause she looks like a coyote :) ) KUDOS to Donald, Kurt, Suzzie and Harold!!! (as well as wilberth -->gardener, Coyo--> security Guard, and Yamileth -->House keeping!!) see ya soon!!!!

Room Tip: what ever room you get its absolutely fine!!

We loved staying here, but feel some warnings should be made for certain types of travelers. This is at least a 10 minute drive from Tamarindo on a gravel road that is poorly graded. The cabins are more than sufficient, but not luxurious, but have great views of the countryside. Overall the location is not wheelchair accessible and probably not a great choice for older travelers. The breakfast was fantastic with toast, coffee, tea, fresh fruit and eggs could be ordered for a small charge. There is wifi in the louge/lobby area. The pool is great, we saw many lizards come out to sunbathe next to us as well. Also, because the hotel is surrounded by farmers there is a family of roosters that begins to make noise at 4:30 am.
