Arrived at Axos at 10pm to be told they had no record of our booking but not to worry as we could stay in the hotel next door and it would all be sorted by the next morning. As you can imagine, we didn't get much sleep and the hotel we were put in was very basic and not what we had paid for. After a stressful night, went back to Axos and were told we could have a free breakfast as they were waiting for an email regarding our booking (how that worked when it was 6.30 UK time, I don't know.) After breakfast, we were told that everything was sorted and our room would be ready by 12.30. Very disappointed as had a stressful night and were now losing a morning of our holiday.
Once sorted, we had an enjoyable week and no further complaints. The cocktail bar is one of the best and all the staff very helpful throughout the hotel.

The rooms are gorgeous - after staying in 6 properties around Crete this year alone, trust me! - and super affordable.

Perfect location if you like a great party at their bar -- which is almost the only place you can get a cocktail made WELL! -- and near Rethymno city and its beaches.

BUT THE PEOPLE ARE THE BEST PART!!!!
All of the staff/family staff are amazing. We fell in love with the hotel, the bar, and all the familz members.
You will have a blast after exploring the island and coming home to happy hour with Yiannis and Natalia!

(And if not, you're doing something wrong!)

Stayed here for a 2week young couple vacation in July 14. Usually wouldn't go 3*, but took a chance based on the reviews and very glad that we did!!

On arrival we were given a warm welcome by the friendly staff, our room was very clean and the free air con is one of the best we've experienced. Bed was large and comfy, spacious balcony area with nice view of the pool. Kitchen was fully equipped with everything you needed, although the great location of the hotel gave you easy access to over 20+ tavernas.

Its only a short hop on a bus to Rethymnon, which runs every 30mins into the early hours @ 1.20 Euros, or 8 Euros in a taxi.

Pool area was clean and well maintained with plenty of sunbeds to go around. Pool is a good size for the hotel.

Axos Hotel has one of the best cocktail bars in the area, Yannis, Manos, Natalia and Maneos made us feel very welcome and were happy to take us through the menu, or 'off-piste', whilst playing a great selection of music and providing friendly banter into the early hours. (Just beware when they call out Raki or Tequila time, as you'll probably miss out on breakfast the next day!!).
The last night was especially memorable, as my partner was reliving his youth behind the bar creating his own concoctions.

Breakfast - good selection of hot and cold food/drinks, although as the above applied we only made breakfast for half of the holiday ;o)

Would like to thank all the family & staff for a great holiday and will definately be seeing you again in the near future.... YAMAS!!

Lovely room, hotel, cocktails and pool! They gave us a friendly welcome even when we arrived at midnight with tired and crying children! All four of us had a fantastic time at a friend's wedding whilst staying at the Axos Hotel.

Room Tip: The room was spacious and quiet and overlooked the pool

We stayed here for 2 nights in July 2014. The hotel is located in a good place with plenty of bars/restaurants nearby and about 15 minute bus ride from Rethymnon. The hotel is quite small, the rooms are big enough but ours had a tiny bathroom, you could hardly swing a cat but it did us for the 2 days that we were there. The pool and pool area is large enough for the hotel. The rooms werent quite as clean as i would have liked, the bathroom could have been cleaner and the bedding had a strange smell, the noise levels would have been a problem had we been staying here longer as we were right next to reception and on the way to the restaurant. The breakfast for me left alot to be desired i'm afraid, a toaster would have been nice for people who struggled to find something to eat. I really dislike not giving hotels a brilliant review but i like to be honest and say it how i found it, the staff were really lovely and its in a fab location but i'm afraid it was disappointing for me, it was fine for a short break but any longer would not have been any good for us.

Room Tip: Try not to be given the room which is next to reception on the left as this is very noisy

We were a group of four adults and one 2,5 years old child and we stayed in Axos hotel for two weeks in July 2014.

Reservation & Rooms

We made our reservation in January for two studio rooms and we had a special request to have the rooms by the pool side and next to each others. When we arrived we were given one room by the pool side and one room just opposite the other room. This is fair enough in my opinion and worked just perfectly for us.

Our room was the one in front of the pool and it was just perfect for us. Just keep in mind that if you like to keep the balcony door open, there is quite alot of noice (naturally) during the time when people are swimming. But when closing the door the room was quiet during day time so our child could sleep in the day time without problems. Rooms in front of the pool have a nice morning sunshine and are lovely chilled in the afternoon.

Two things that I didn't like was that the noise from the bar reached our room several times but I guess this was a problem in any hotel in the world as it was FIFA 2014 time :) Another was that the room facing corridor wasn't that noise proof and there were quite many times when we woke up during the night when someone talked or yelled abit too loud. There is a sign in the reception telling that keep quiet in the corridor so you can't really blame the hotel for the noise, but perhaps the sign could be abit larger or more visible? And anyways it is the drunken tourists to blaim for the noise, not the hotel :)

The kitchen equipment were ok, though those are in need of renewing abit in my opinion. And for some reason the cooker couldn't heat up the water as fast as we've used to. This was a problem in both of our rooms.

Air condition is free (Yes!) which was a big surprise for us as we are used to the fact that it costs everywhere.

Wlan is free and is supposed to work in the reception and in the bar, but it also worked most of the time in our room and in the balcony.

Breakfast

Breakfast in the hotel cost 5 euros per person (2,5 years old child ate free). It was a lovely breakfast with everything you need to start a day, but I dislike the coffee machine. We tried the breakfast for 3 - 5 times and on the other days we just made the breakfast on our own. It is easy just to pay for the breakfast in the reception whenever you like to have it ready instantly.

The staff

I guess this is what Axos hotel is really all about, the staff! Each and everyone from the staff were so lovely and kind to us. Always ready to help and serve, always smiling, so full of energy and they so enjoyed their work. The small problems with the nightly noises or other small things were forgotten when just seeing the staff in action.

During the past year i've been staying in 5-star hotels such as Leela palace, Marriott, Manila hotel etc. I like them, but in my honest opinion those aren't even close to the luxury of Axos hotel. Really, who would want to spend time in cold and soulless 5-star hotels with "fake" atmosphere from the staff when you could spend your time in a family owned hotel with warm atmosphere and wonderful staff?

In what 5-star hotel can you find the manager swimming with his children in the pool or working with the bar staff, working in the reception etc.. I guess nowhere.
But in 3-star Axos you can find this and the manager has all my respect. By working in the reception and in the bar the manager is very often close to the customers which is a really really good thing as then he gets the feedback directly from us.

Thanks for the great holiday in Axos hotel! Will definitely come back if we return to Rethymnon/Platanias :)
