“Big pool, close to beach”
Reviewed October 21, 2012 via mobile

Located Out of the main area, but very close to beach and restaurants and easy to get around by taxi. They didn't clean our room on Sunday. They have a really big pool and an option of buffet breakfast. Rooms were big with nice balcony

Second time in the Axos Hotel...not the last
If you want a family run haven away from the 'all-in' melee then you've found it
The family and staff are all lovely and make your visit a joy
The Hotel is in a great position for the town and the beach so you can just relax
Already dreaming of when we can return !!

Room Tip: If you want a quieter more peaceful room..day or night choose a garden view room

We chose Axos for a first visit to Crete in September 2012 after reading many great reviews on the internet and I must say that every single positive review we’d read was fully justified. From the moment we arrived we were greeted by friendly and helpful people - particularly Yanis, Manos, Natalia and Sophia – who made us feel very welcome and did everything they could to make our stay a happy and relaxed one.
We had requested a pool side room (a tip we’d picked up from the reviews) and sure enough we were assigned a lovely little apartment (253) with it’s own balcony overlooking the pool area. It was pretty compact, but then we’d booked a standard studio deliberately because we had no intention of doing much more than sleeping in it. It was well kitted out and impeccably clean when we arrived and kept so throughout our week by Axos’ keen and helpful staff. Despite it overlooking the pool area I don’t recall hearing any noise from the bar downstairs once our balcony door was closed.
We ate plenty of bar food during our stay which generally was excellent – grab a pizza, or try one of Sofia’s burgers (better still, pray you’re offered some of her delicious beef stew as we were). We also pre-booked breakfast on arrival so every morning came down for a more than adequate continental style buffet breakfast.
In the evenings the bar was pretty busy given the lateness of the season, but still Yanis and Manos always made time to stop by our table and have a chat, asking us about our day, chatting about music or family, teaching us a little Greek or just having a dig at each others’ football teams. Always though, they were keen to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and that we were happy with everything. We always were.
The musical entertainment one night (Polka Dots) was superb, but most evenings were spent just chilling with a beer or a cocktail, listening to Yani’s music selection and chatting or playing cards. There were things going on elsewhere if we’d wanted, but to be fair we were more than content to just stay where we were and let the world go by. We did go out a few evenings, but always ended up back in the relaxing atmosphere of the Axos bar.
What else is there to say about the Axos other than we’ll definitely “see you next year”...

Room Tip: Try to get a poolside room

I would endorse all the other very positive reviews. Manos and his family make all their guests feel very welcome. The hotel has perhaps the cleanest pool we have ever swum in. The appartments are very well appointed and the location of the hotel is perfect - close to all amenities.

This is a lovely, spotlessly clean, small family run hotel. The afternoon we arrived our room wasn't available yet so we were shown to an adequate room in the hotel next door and offered free dinner and breakfast the next morning by way of recompense. This seemed like a good deal to me, and our bags were ready for us in our proper room shortly after breakfast the next morning.
Our room was a good size and was nicely decorated. The beds were very comfy but it was a shame that the sheets were too small for the bed and wouldn't tuck in. The bathroom was clean and had a great powerful shower. The drawback being that it was over a small bath with a step in the middle. I don't know if you're meant to sit and shower but i like to stand and it was a bit uncomfortable/dangerous. The room was well equipped with the usual, hair dryer, fridge and microwave. Our room looked out onto the pool which was mostly quiet. The double glazed doors and window and the blinds kept out as much noise and light as we wanted. Maids came every day but Sunday.
The pool was nice but smaller than it looked in the pictures. There were plenty of Sun beds.
The bar was nice and usually busy with live entertainment a couple of times a week.
The beach was great and just a 5 min walk away.
I would definitely go back!

The Axos Hotel was a great location for the beach, bars and central for trips into Rethymno. The self catering apartment was very good, large and good facilities. The bar was a fun place to be, Happy Hour for residents was a good time to sample the many cocktails on offer. Thursday was 80's night with lots of dance music from a DJ that got people up and the affro wigs and Manos the Manager dressed as Elvis added to the atmosphere. A family run hotel that provides very good accommodation.

Stayed here 6th-13th Sept 2012 and I have to say it is the best self catering accommodation I have ever stayed in on all the greek islands I have visited. Myself my husband and our two friends stayed here in rooms 213 and 214, The studios are so spacious, lovely decor and a lovely bathroom.Check accommodation on their website you won't be disappointed. The superior studios and apartments on the upper level have huge balconies so if you want to sunbathe on your balcony book one of these. The family who run the Axos are the most beautiful, happy, helpful ,people you could meet . Anything you want to know about the area just ask them. Oh and Manos I think this is how his name is pronounced, is an absolute gem. This guy works so hard in the bar in the evenings making sure all the guests are looked after, He is also very friendly and takes time to chat with the guests. A group called the Polka Dots were on one evening and they are excellent, only young people too. If I return to Platanes in the future this is the only place I will be staying. So close to everything and for the folks who love the beach it's only over the road with a two minute walk.
