We stayed at the Leoniki Residence on the second week of our holiday, having spent the first week in Agios Nikolaos. The complex is sandwiched between two busy roads, one being the National Road and the other being the old road into Rethymnon. We had a ground floor 1 bedroom unit which was more than adeqate for 2 of us. It was clean and comfortable at the end of a corridor but the traffic noise was awful. It was a good job we didn't stay in our rooms for any length of time. I daresay some units do not have as much traffic noise.
The reception staff at the Leoniki.tried to persuade us to eat in their restaurant for 5 out of the 7 days but we enjoy eating out. There are 2 pools which were clean and well maintained. The internet access was a bit expensive at 3 euros for an hour. The whole place is heaving with timeshare reps although no one approached us at the Leoniki but they were showing people round who they had persuaded to come from Rethymnon. We were approached in the town by timeshare reps but when we told them we were staying at the Leoniki they soon left us alone. The reception staff at Club Greece, which is with whom they are affilliated to are very helpful. Top marks to them.
The surrounding restaurants are mainly on the main road through Platanias, so the traffic noise can spoil the enjoyment but there are some places away form the road. There are a couple of restaurants down the path across the road from the complex leading to the beach and they overlook the sea.. We ate at one of them twice. The other one was about to open in the evenings as we left which was the end of May. Another restaurant, Taverna Garden was excellent and the owner was a very pleasant guy.
Rethymnon is definitely worth a visit. There is a fairly regular bus into the town for 1euro 30 cents. The old part of the town has narrow streets with some amazing architecture. and lovely restuarants, one being Taverna Vassos. We had lunch there a couple of times.
Chania is another interesting place with harbourside tavernas and narrow winding streets. The buses are modern and cheap and we went to Chania on the bus which is just over an hour's journey along the coastal road.
If you are feeling fit , the Samaria Gorge is amazing. We went on an organised trip which means a very early start but worth the effort. The Imbros Gorge is much shorter, only 8 km downhill but again with amazing scenery. There were spring flowers everywhere. We also took the green and yellow road train from near the Leoniki on a 5 villages tour. We were taken into the quiet villages a few miles away which to us was the real Crete and very enjoyable.
We do not usually go back to the same place twice as there are so many other places to see. We may go back to Crete sometime in the future but would not stay at the Grand Leoniki as the trafic noise spoilt it for us. If you do not mind the traffic, thats fine. Platanias did not have much to offer us but we enjoyed the overall stay in Crete.

Through RCI was booked for the week before Greek Easter. Front office does not have enough written info nor clerks knowledgeable enough to steer you to a good exploratoin of Crete or the other islands. We got our info from Stsvros the owenr of a vcery authentic greek restaurant a block from Leoniki across from the supermarket. Stavros informed us about the city of Rethymnon, how and where to get to the main thoroughfare and just about everything. The front desk clerk when asked just told us to buy a guide instead of giving us information of basic things. Leoniki change sheets twice in one week and also gives you a very old towel every three days. They do not allow you to eat at their restaurant unless you pay for the weekly meals (breakfast and dinner) which menas you can not eat anywhere else since you have to subscribe to their meals. There are a lot of other things to do other than eat at one place every day.Their internet service is spotty, If you are going to Crete on off season then Leoniki is the only hotel open in Platanias. If you go during high season, there will be too many of us tourists and the traffic will be horendous, parking is going to be a problem.

Four of us stayed in Leoniki Residence side of Leoniki Hotels for a week in April 2008 (www.leoniki.com). That side is at the front of the property, where the lobby, restaurant, bar, and main swimming pool are located. The hotel is actually located in Platanias, a coastal suburb of Rethymnon. It is affiliated with the RCI time-share exchange program.

There are separate buildings each with a few units on the ground and first floor. Our one bedroom unit is on the first floor overlooking the pool. The BR is large, with queen bed, cabinets and a desk. The small living room has 2 built-in sofa benches arranged at L-shape, with long seat cushions. We found that they are too narrow for adults to sleep in, but may be ideal for kids. The small open kitchen is on the other side. The gridless cooktop is modern and nice. There are fridge, microwave, coffee maker (get your own filters), toaster and very limited number of utensils/plates. The kitchen table can seat 4 but crampy. The bathroom is really spacious by Euro standard, with double vanities. The whole place is not plush, but clean, pleasant and comfy. You are not expected to spend lots of time inside anyway.

The semi-covered balcony is large and very useful. We sat around the outdoor table for breakfast and snack/wine times. We saw distant mountains on one side, and part of the ocean on the other. The pool and surrounding landscape below the balcony round up the resort ambience. We also dried our hand-washed laundry in the balcony since there’s plenty of tropical breeze and sun.

It was a pleasure to stroll around the premise and enjoy all the gardening around every corner. The main swimming pool is large and nice (if you don’t mind unheated water). The Grand Leoniki is towards the backside and connected by a trail (a few minutes walk). There are 2 other pools, indoor hot tub, gym room and massage center. That side seemed to be noisier due to more kids and families.

The hotel restaurant looks nice and has extensive menu, but on the pricey side after exchange rate conversion. Dinner entrees cost around €20 (US$32) and breakfast €10 (US$16). We found many choices of budget eateries on the main street within walking distance. Beware that not every restaurant is open in the off peak season (from winter till May). We saw many places just started to get cleaned up and repainted before opening in a few weeks. Read my pieces on Crete Summary of Restaurants and Restaurant Review.

The front desk was very helpful and hotel service was up to our expectation. We got info on restaurants and driving directions. The staff always greeted us whenever we saw them indoor or out. There are 2 computers in the lobby for internet access (prepaid at €5/hr) . There are 2 local supermarkets nearby, which prices are reasonable and affordable.

During the stay we realized that the hotel’s location is not exactly ideal for our touring needs. Although it is somewhat central on the north coast of Crete, we still have to drive to go anywhere else each day. Driving time to Rethymnon was 20 min, Chania 40 min, Heraklion 1-1.5 hrs. Platanias itself is a seasonal tourist town with nothing much attractive. Even the beach is quite a walk from the front door and not too appealing or special. An alternative would be to stay closer to a major town, where one can live like locals and within easy reach to local attractions, e.g., Chania. But Leoniki definitely offers a resort-like setting away from local residential areas.

We booked our stay in Crete at this hotel through RCI, and found our accommodation to be in the right place to explore Crete. The hotel is a short walk to the sandy and long beach which one could only imagine would have thousand of beach lovers in the summer. We had a unit on the top floor overlooking the large pool, the unit was clean and well maintained. November is out of season and most of the surrounding properties were closed but not to far is the city of Rethymnon which has a history and lots to see and do as well as excellent dinning. We toured Crete on our own and found this hotel handy to get to and from and parking was not a problem. The hotel staff really tried to provide the guests with a quality time which I think we all appreciated.

We stayed in a 1 bed appartment, my husband and I, and found the accommodation very comfortable and roomy (even if our son and daughter-in-law had been with us there would have been ample room), we overlooked the main pool and main thoroughfare through the grounds, which we thought would be noisy but wasn't, even with all the Easter festivities going on.

We found the hotel staff very pleasant and friendly. The maid service was excellent and the linen and towels were changed more regularly than most Greek hotels (every other day, except Sundays). The grounds were kept clean and tidy at all times.

We ate in the Hotel restaurant quite often, taking advantage of the special rates for the Easter meals and entertainment, we found that even without these rates the meals were value for money and very well cooked and varied. We did venture to a few other eateries that were open and found the food quite varied.

We also holidayed there in May, this year, and found that the hussle and bussle tended to distract us from the enjoyment we had when out of season, but to be fair, we like the quieter resorts anyway.

It is a nice base from which to travel to other locations on Crete, especially if you have a car.
