“Friendly and helpful staff!!”
Reviewed May 11, 2013 via mobile

My husband and I just came back from a 1 week stay at Golden Beach. The staff are absolutely incredible, cannot do enough to help. We arrived at 9.30pm and some dinner had been held back for us. We then went to the bar. The barman (I think his name was George) is a real character! We spent most nights at the bar chatting with him. He's great with all the guests, giving out shots of Raki periodically to those sitting at the bar. The drink prices are similar to home, €7.50 for a half bottle of wine, €2.40 for a large bottle of Mythos beer. The room was a decent size, with a small balcony and a very compact bathroom with a bath with shower over, toilet and sink. It was cleaned daily, there were a few marks on the sink on the night we arrived but these were gone after the room had been cleaned the next day. The local area has shops, bars and restaurants. We ate at one place, I think it was called Alexandrios, which I would recommend but don't order the cheap wine! We also ate at the sports bar, it's alright, pretty cheap and cheerful but shows a variety of sports. There is a supermarket on the right of the hotel as you walk out of the hotel, make sure you buy your bottles of water here, miles cheaper than the water in the hotel. Also sells crisps, sweets, playing cards, flip flops, etc. this is also where you can buy tickets for the bus to Rethymnon, €1.20 each way. The bus stop is a little beyond the shop. I would not recommend the walk unless you have suitable footwear (not flip flops!). We did this one day on the advice of the owner after 2 buses had passed us full and there was awful traffic. Over 4 miles and an hour and a half later...! The food in the hotel was fine for our requirements, breakfast is some sort of eggs (fried or scrambled. There are also hard boiled eggs), cooked tomatoes and either bacon or frankfurter style sausage. There are cereals with various dried fruits, Greek yoghurt and honey. Then there are breads and cheese and cold meats. Tea, coffee and juice are available, although I didn't think much of the tea and was glad of a tetley of the plane home! Lunch is ordered at the bar. Pizza, pasta, cheeseburgers, salads, omelettes and cheese toasties are a few of the dishes available at very reasonable prices if you just want a quick bite before getting back to the sunbed (€5 a day for 2 sunbeds and a parasol). Dinner is salads, and then usually a pasta dish, lamb, turkey, pork or something, there was pizza one night and vegetables. Dessert was a bit hit and miss for me, but there was melon which was fine. No drinks are included in the evening, but the girls in the restaurant will take your drinks order and bring them over. You can pay on the evening or start a room tab. One day we received a huge BBQ style buffet at lunchtime instead of the evening meal because it was Easter over there, including music and traditional dancers. The pool is lovely and refreshing on a hot day, not heated, but you soon get used to it! There have been a small changes over the winter from what I can gather from previous pictures. There is a beautiful light display above the bar, and they have created a lovely atmosphere in the lobby by putting rose petals, flowers and candles everywhere. It was Easter while we were there, so it may have had something to do with that. I will try to add some pictures to show this.

Just returned from a week of planned relaxation 2/11/2012 at the Golden Beach Hotel, we stayed on a half board basis. The hotel is clean, spacious and comfortable, the decor is unusual, and gets people talking. All staff are polite and keen to please. The rooms are basic and do not provide coffee making facilities. A sea view room is a must. The beach is sand and shingle; sunbeds are available at 5 euros per day (for 2)at both the pool and the beach. The hotel buffet can only be described as adequate , lacking in taste and presentation. Flies were a minor problem in the dining room.
The area was on the whole deserted given that it was season end, this was actually pleasant and made you relax more. Rethymon old town is a short taxi or bus ride away for a walk around the harbour, the old fort, shopping or coffee with friends.
This holiday was booked as a no frills get away and that is exactly what we got and was on the whole enjoyable.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a seaview.

Hi
just returned 26/10/2012 from a weeks stay there.Just as advertised ,idea location on the beach and near bars etc.Rooms good .if you were lucky to get a sea view even better.Buffet breakfast and evening dinner ,we could not fault it.The hotel was clean and the staff were so helpful,.We arrived late but a hot meal was available if needed.A bus stop outside the hotel to take you in to Rethymnon, you can buy tickets at reception ,also ask for a map of the city.As a late flight back we kept our room for a small charge. In other words we would definitely go back to this hotel,as mentioned a larger shower would have been better, but that's a small thing

Room Tip: sea view if possible ,no sun on though ? rooms over entrance have sun

Nice hotel for the money. Rooms clean. The staff are very attentive. Not much to do at night, particularly for kids. This may be because we were staying at the end of the season though. We had terrible weather for most of our week (obviously not their fault) which limited our options. We went into Rethymon several times, which is only a short bus ride away. You get the tickets from hotel reception at €2.40 return and is well worth going. The beach is good but not for swimming as there are very strong undercurrents all along this part of the coast. If you chose a sea view room, you will only get a shower cubicle which is a little on the small side. The side rooms have a bath with shower.

We booked a holiday with Thomson at short notice when there were not many rooms left for our time-slot. We went for the last room available at Golden Beach, the least pricey hotel on offer.

Arriving at 10pm we found a meal had been kept for us. Our room was clean and comfortable and surprisingly spacious. We were delighted to discover in the morning that we were on the side of the building, having both a sea view and a great view of distant hills. We slept with the balcony door open except on the few occasions when the hotel next door had late-night music. Door shut and good air-conditioning dealt with that.

The food was well-prepared and there was considerable choice. Buffet style, there was never a shortage. For breakfast the cold meats and cheese we have often found around the Mediterranean were there, but so were continental and British style breakfasts, though bacon was often replaced by sliced frankfurter-style sausage. There were several cereals, muesli, dried fruit: raisins, prunes and bananas. There were sliced peaches, milk, yoghurt and honey, a wide selection of bread. There were coffee, chocolate, tea and camomile; there were grapefruit, orange and sour cherry juices.

At dinner there was always a spaghetti dish and then pork, meatballs, chicken or lamb, usually a fish dish and occasionally squid, with various vegetables: peas and carrots, beans, sometimes greens, usually aubergine. There was a wide selection of salads and cold dishes. The sweet course ranged from various fruits, melon and glace cherries, to puddings and gateaux.

The hotel has an extensive shady bar area next to two of the three pools and beyond that it has a large number of loungers and sun umbrellas on the beach - not strictly "golden" and including shingle and coarse sand in bands near the water. The beach and sea are very clean and the safety flag was usually green, only briefly red. The loungers cost €5 for 2 loungers and an umbrella from early morning to 3pm, by the sea or the pool. Most days we used the free patio-style white chairs by the pool. The pool and the whole area were very clean.

The staff, several of whom are the owners' family, were patient and helpful, switching smoothly between Greek, German and English. Bar, restaurant and room staff work exceedingly hard and always courteously.

Having to be out of our room by 12 noon and not leaving by coach to the airport until 5pm we did consider the advertised option of keeping the room till 5 for an extra €20 but then were offered the option of keeping our luggage in their baggage room and having free short-term use of a room to change (and optionally shower) in before leaving. The only requirement was that we keep our previous room's towels.

Thomson's rep was in most mornings and we took up two of the Thomson coach excursions, not cheap but with very helpful guides. There were many local shops, bars and tavernas in easy reach.

Altogether a very pleasant holiday and good value.

Some of the negative reviews tell us more about the reviewer than the hotel or the holiday.

My wife and I have just returned from a relaxing week at the Golden Beach. The rooms are basic, but exactly as we had been led to believe and we stayed in room 624 which was on the second floor and looked right out onto the beach, although a larger shower cubicle would have been nice but we managed and it certainly didn't spoil our stay. The food was excellent with a good variety to suit all nationalities and the staff were all really friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again when we return to Crete.

Both my partner and I flew from east middlands airport on the 16 August 2012 and it was a late afternoon/early evening flight so by the time we got to The Golden Beach Hotel it was about 2.30 am local time, but the gentleman on reception was so helpful and friendly it was a pleasant surprise to be greeted in such a manner at such an un-godly hour. He even said there was a surprise for us in the shape of some food laid on for us but we were far too tired and just unpacked and went straight to sleep.

Our room over looked the main beach and was more than big enough for the two of us. It had a color tv and two large single beds and was very clean and tidy, the only draw back was a very small bathroom and a tiny shower cubicle. There's a safe (Twelve euro's per week) in the room, inside the wardrobe just as you walk into the room. There is an excellent air conditioning system in every room too.

We booked our holiday through Thompson on a half board basis and we found the food was both excellent and varied, at breakfast and in the evenings. There's a menu on the bar during the day time if you wish to eat outside and the food is very reasonably priced, four euros for a large tuna pizza. The choice of food on the day time menu is not massive but what is there is very tasty and filling. The portions are quite large.

The drinks in the hotel are again very reasonable but be aware a large bottle of water was two euro's twenty cents where as if you bought the same size bottle from a supermarket it was only forty five cents but when its 3.30am and all the shops are closed and your partner NEEDS a bottle of water to take some headache tablets what can a person do?

The staff at this hotel are excellent they can't do enough for you, we requested to keep our room on for a full day and it was no trouble. Our flight home wasn't until late at night (00.40 hrs) and the return coach wasn't picking us up till 21.30 hrs. They only charged us twenty euros for the whole day so we where able to spend a full day by the side of the pool and then able to freshen up before setting off back home.

The bar woman who works in the outside bar and serves drinks in the dinning room for the evening meal, works so hard from around 9am till around 9.30pm seven days a week, is a treasure, she always has a smile and a friendly greeting for everyone. she speaks four different languages fluently and is so helpful.

The only very slight complaint is the bin at the side of our toilet was left for two days before it was emptied but we know that was our fault as we came back early one day as the maids were in our room so they left without emptying it so we feel it was an oversight on their part as my partner and I interrupted their cleaning duties. We just went down to reception the next day and requested it to be emptied, which it had been by time we had finished breakfast.

Crete is a magical island and The Golden Beach Hotel is a part of that experience. My partner and I SHALL be going back, soon I hope......

Room Tip: The best rooms we found are the one's overlooking the sea, it's worth [paying that little bi...
