My husband and I just came back from a 1 week stay at Golden Beach. The staff are absolutely incredible, cannot do enough to help. We arrived at 9.30pm and some dinner had been held back for us. We then went to the bar. The barman (I think his name was George) is a real character! We spent most nights at the bar chatting with him. He's great with all the guests, giving out shots of Raki periodically to those sitting at the bar. The drink prices are similar to home, €7.50 for a half bottle of wine, €2.40 for a large bottle of Mythos beer. The room was a decent size, with a small balcony and a very compact bathroom with a bath with shower over, toilet and sink. It was cleaned daily, there were a few marks on the sink on the night we arrived but these were gone after the room had been cleaned the next day. The local area has shops, bars and restaurants. We ate at one place, I think it was called Alexandrios, which I would recommend but don't order the cheap wine! We also ate at the sports bar, it's alright, pretty cheap and cheerful but shows a variety of sports. There is a supermarket on the right of the hotel as you walk out of the hotel, make sure you buy your bottles of water here, miles cheaper than the water in the hotel. Also sells crisps, sweets, playing cards, flip flops, etc. this is also where you can buy tickets for the bus to Rethymnon, €1.20 each way. The bus stop is a little beyond the shop. I would not recommend the walk unless you have suitable footwear (not flip flops!). We did this one day on the advice of the owner after 2 buses had passed us full and there was awful traffic. Over 4 miles and an hour and a half later...! The food in the hotel was fine for our requirements, breakfast is some sort of eggs (fried or scrambled. There are also hard boiled eggs), cooked tomatoes and either bacon or frankfurter style sausage. There are cereals with various dried fruits, Greek yoghurt and honey. Then there are breads and cheese and cold meats. Tea, coffee and juice are available, although I didn't think much of the tea and was glad of a tetley of the plane home! Lunch is ordered at the bar. Pizza, pasta, cheeseburgers, salads, omelettes and cheese toasties are a few of the dishes available at very reasonable prices if you just want a quick bite before getting back to the sunbed (€5 a day for 2 sunbeds and a parasol). Dinner is salads, and then usually a pasta dish, lamb, turkey, pork or something, there was pizza one night and vegetables. Dessert was a bit hit and miss for me, but there was melon which was fine. No drinks are included in the evening, but the girls in the restaurant will take your drinks order and bring them over. You can pay on the evening or start a room tab. One day we received a huge BBQ style buffet at lunchtime instead of the evening meal because it was Easter over there, including music and traditional dancers. The pool is lovely and refreshing on a hot day, not heated, but you soon get used to it! There have been a small changes over the winter from what I can gather from previous pictures. There is a beautiful light display above the bar, and they have created a lovely atmosphere in the lobby by putting rose petals, flowers and candles everywhere. It was Easter while we were there, so it may have had something to do with that. I will try to add some pictures to show this.
