L'Tur highly recommended this 'luxury 4 stars' hotel to us. But it turns out, this crappy hotel should be rated no more than 2 stars. This hotel is not a good choice neither for the backpacker nor for those who would like to enjoy a luxury vacation. If you want to visit Heraklion and other cities in Crete while staying this hotel, it takes you at least 2 hrs to the major transportation station in Heraklion, and from there, you have to take other buses or ferries. Therefore you just waste all your time coming back and forth between bus stations. If you would like to just spend whole day on beach, trying find a decent hotel in the downtown of Rethymon instead of here. The beach in front of hotel, and acturally in front of all the hotels in this neighbourhood, is like rural area. The sand are not soft at all. It was almost killing my feet when I was trying taking a walk before sunset. The room are very small. If you keep the aircondition working at night, it is so laud you can not even get to sleep. If you want to sleep with the balcony door opened, it is so hot in the room, that you can not even breath. There is also a weird noise in our bathromm, which kept us almost all night awake. The travel agency said it is all included. Anyway, we have to pay all the drinks during our dinner and have to pay for a seat on beach. The guest toilett are the worst. Do not use them!

My OH and I have just returned from our holiday staying at the Golden Beach Hotel. We stayed here last year and booked again for this year. We were not disappointed! lovely relaxed hotel, stylishly decorated and the staff are very approachable and helpful. The buffet breakfasts and meals were very good, lots of fresh Greek salads, fruit, olives, feta cheeses and yoghurts as well as cold meats and hot food. The teas, coffees, water and juices are included in the breakfast but drinks are at a supplement in the evening. It is a nice family run hotel and Michael gave an amazing evening talk about Cretan mythology and history as well as running a mosaic making class. They also have a Greek night with dancers and barbeque once a week which was very good. I htink the rooms are different layouts depending on which block you are in, we were at the front near the main road and the room was a good size but I have read that other rooms have been smaller depending on the situation in the hotel. The downside of this hotel is that the beach is stoney/sandy and the sea was rough causing it to be red flagged most days. Also there are big boulders in the water making swimming very difficult so we gave up and used the pool thereafter. The resort itself is not that exciting but ok, there are enough bars and restuarants to visit but for more then you really need to go to Rethymnon. We hired a car and were able to visit Knossos and other places in Crete. I would stay at the Golden Beach again as I really enjoy the ambience of this hotel.

My wife and I have just returned from a 2 week holiday to the Golden Beach in May. Altough the hotel is lovely and clean and the two ppols are well maintained.
Unfortunatley, the rooms themsleves are very small, especially the bathroom area. I could sit on the toilet, gave a shower and clean my teeth without moving. Also the shower curtian was a complete waste of time.
The food in the restuarant is definatley german oriantated, however there is lots of it, especially around the salad bar area.
The beach is very long and quite nice and also kept very clean by the guys who look after the sunbeds, however swimming in the sea is very dangerous as there is big underwater rocks which you cannot see until you hit them about 10 feet under. BEWARE DONT DIVE IN
The hotel itself is out on the limb, so there is not many places to visit in the evening unless you go into rethymnon so it gets a little boring at night. Taxi fares to rethymnon cost 8-10 Euros each way.
Lastly, beware of the greek barman in the hotel at night as he tries to charge you double the price, especially on the Greek entertainment nights. Also he does not like being told.
One other complaint is that they charge 5 Euros for the sunbed around the hotel pool, the same as the beach which i feel is a bit of a rip off as you have already paid for the hotel facilities.
All in all, the weather was good and it was a good break but i wouldn not recommend this hotel. I definatley would not go back.

Room Tip: Book a room in the middle block and not the side block as theyre is a disco at the sider of the hote...

Travelled in June 2012, And flew late at night so didnt arrive till the early hours in the morning but check in was easy enough & had food saved for us. We had a sea view which was in a different block to the main hotel. It seemed to have three different blocks, all part of the same hotel. The breakfast had good options with cold & hot choices, With fresh baked breads, Cheese & meats with a selection of juices & water included. The sunbeds on the beach were a good price of 5Euros a day for 2 beds.

The food in the evening wasnt anything special, there was a good choice of hot & salad choices though & the option to pay for your drinks at the table or add it to a tab which i thought was a good choice.

The hotels location was good with things in the local area, with a fair choice of bars & shops. The hotel was only a 10 minute bus journey to the old town & the harbour and for only 2.40 return. The bus stop was just outside the shop next door and came every half an hour. We also hired a car though to travel around the island & the hotel had plently of spaces to park with no charge.

Room Tip: The sea view rooms were worth the money, but had a very small balcony

I went on this holiday as my first abroad for many, many years (25). This was a clean, beautiful Island to visit. You need to go there to appreciate all there is to discover!!

Room Tip: Try to get a sea view room - you will appreciate it more

My OH and I stayed at the Golden Beach June 2011. We had such an enjoyable experience that we've booked to go back this year too! I thought the hotel main areas: foyers and bar were stylishly decorated and the flower petals and lokum were nice touches. Our room was comfortable and maid service each day - nothing was too much trouble for the staff and Litza the bar lady was so friendly.

We thought the range of food on buffet was good, esp the breakfasts with Greek yoghurt, honey, oranges, cereals, halva, feta, tomatoes etc. There were cooked options but tbh we never really bothered with them as we enjoyed the cold buffet so much. The evening meals were pretty similar (except the cereals) with cold meats and hot options and good choice of desserts- . The hot food was just ok but again it wasn't a big issue for us as we loved the cold buffet. We had planned to go out for a few evenings to restaurants for a change of scene and had souvilaki and pizza. I've noticed a few reviewers have found the food to be orientated towards the German guests. I never felt that as I thought it was more Greek with the range of salads etc but if you prefer more Brit food this might not be for you. The Greek night was amazing and was beautifully laid out with an amazing range of choice. I'd say the downside was that the drinks were expensive .

Just returned refreshed and relaxed from golden beach. The hotel has a strange lay out, lots of corridors and ways out.The food was good, think the variety was being scaled down as coming to the end of season, but when you holiday late in season it is to be expected. The staff were polite and friendly, rooms clean and beds very comfortable. The hotel is situated on the beach in the center of the village which was nice having somewhere to walk and shops to look around.,ideal for travellers who have walking difficulties and cannot do hills as the street is on the level just need to take care of some of the high kerbs . The bus stop just outside hotel takes you into Rethymnon, journey time around 15 minutes, can be crowded on the bus, often standing room only, so may not be suitable for the not so able guests.

Room Tip: would suggest booking a sea view as there were a few rooms tucked away which did not look very nice...
