We also had a liitle dog with us who loved the big garden, so big that we could choose several places for our lunchtime picnics, when the sun was just warm enough. Gill and Cai ( the owners and next door neighbours) have cats, but with all that space canine and felines hardly ever met. The gîte has been furnished with a lot of thought and is practical, yet cosy. Both rooms are a good size. There is a nice selection of books and a snug sitting room. Gill and Cai are very "au fait" with the area and will give good advice on shops, restaurants, walks, visits etc, but also on any questions you may have about the local flora and fauna. Caunes is quite well located to visit the "pays des cathares" and the Minervois and Cabardès wine regions... Ideal for a holliday!

Stayed in this gite in July 2012 and had a wonderful time. The gite is well-equipped and tastefully fitted out and was perfect for the four of us. It has a south-facing aspect across the beautiful garden of the owners who live in the adjoining house. You can sunbathe or sit in a shady corner according to choice or use the pool which is nominally shared with the English owners, though they are rarely seen there. However, they are helpful in every way and have an extensive knowledge of the area that they will share.
The gite is situated on the edge of the village where the road starts to rise into the hills north of the plain. A boulangerie, supermarket and a typical cafe with a terrace under plane trees are within a short stroll and there are several eating places to suit a range of tastes and pockets.
The area has many things to do - ancient cities, beaches within an hour's drive or swimming in rivers and lakes, well-marked walks in the hills or across the plain and many other places of interest.
One word of caution - the gite is accessed by a flight of stairs so wouldn't be suitable for the very elderly or infirm. Otherwise, perfect for a rural French holiday.
