“Very Picturesque hotel next to Orangutan Sanctury”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

Beautiful hotel built around a liake 2 minutes from the Sepilock Sanctury. Rooms which are all individual cabins are nicely furnished, with comfortable beds and private bathrooms.

Food was very nice, mixture of local and European. Staff were very helpful.

We stayed at Sepilok Nature Resort for 2 nights mainly because of its close proximity to the Orangutan Sanctuary and we were not disappointed. The resort is only a 5 minute walk from the sanctuary so easy to access. The chalets and communal buildings are built around a lake (muddy) and accessed by a wooden boardwalk which meanders through the gardens to each chalet. The gardens are lovely with heaps of orchids growing everywhere and are well maintained. The accomodation consists of individual wooden "chalets" which are comfortable and clean with plenty of room. We were lucky to have a chalet that backed onto the jungle so were blessed with wildlife right on our back door including some lovely little Red Leaf Monkeys playing in the trees. There is nowhere close by to eat so you have to settle for a very limited menu at the resort where the food was eatable but uninspiring although the view over the lake is pleasing and it is an open air restaurant and the staff are very willing to oblige. I will make some allowances for the restaurant as they are in the process of rebuilding it. There is a tour guide who services the resort and met us on arrival which was very handy. He filled us in on how everything ran including the Orangutan Sanctuary and took us on a wonderful trip to see the probiscus monkeys.

So very close to the orangutans you can walk in minutes! Chalets are so very lovely. Exactly want you might imagine a luxury jungle lodge would look like. Lush. Beautiful ...and the wide open eating area was a pleasure to dine in. Food is only okay here but you dont come for the food! You come for the wildlife and Sepilok does not disappoint!

Room Tip: There is no pool here!

We visited the resort as part of a package tour with the purpose of visiting the Orang rehabilitation project 5 minutes walk down the road.
The resort is primarily of wooden construction and initially we had some problems with the air conditioning but this was fixed by the staff.
The food was rather a disappointment and represented the lower end of the quality spectrum that we had come to expect from Borneo. meat was tough and not very well flavoured, however we were only there for one night. Breakfast was equally uninspiring. The surroundings were peaceful with well laid out chalets and boardwalks around a central lagoon
Leaving aside the accommodation the visit to the Orang centre was amazing especially the night walk we arranged with one of the guides. ( see other reviews)

Room Tip: All chalets identical

We stayed in this hotel for two nights late last December. The reason for choosing this particular hotel was the close proximity to the Sepilok Orang utan centre. We checked in late afternoon after viewing the afternoon Orang utan feeding. We were surprised to have arrived at the feeding on time only to find they had already started so a good tip here would be to arrive 20 minutes or so before feeding time. We would have also arrived well in time if it hadn't been for an "impossible to fit it all in" tour of Sandakan City we had taken from the Myne resort. First impressions of this hotel are good visually and a very friendly & genuine welcome helps to make you feel as if they really value their guests. You enter through the reception and out onto a deck where the restaurant is. The deck looks out over a pond with large fish & monitor lizards in it to the chalets beyond. They are building another restaurant at present up on an adjacent small hill. I am guessing that when completed this new restaurant will be able to be accessed from the Sepilok Orang utan centre as well as the resort. The rooms are spaced out around the outside of the pond which meanders around the area. Some chalets are up a large number of steps and some are not. The wooden boardwalks that you walk along to get to the rooms can be extremely slippery & even being aware of this we nearly fell over several times. So please be very careful walking along these boardwalks especially if you do not have shoes with a lot of tread on them and especially when you are turning a corner on the boardwalk. The chalets themselves are spacious and quite comfortable. We found the bed very comfortable. My wife was delighted one evening as she took a shower and a small green frog jumped out of the bath waste onto the side of the bath. Unfortunately we found it dead on the floor of the room some time later and we think it must have ingested some pyrethrum that may have been sprayed around the rooms to keep bugs out. We never saw any bugs. The Air conditioning unit in the room is extremely powerful to cope with the very high humidity of the area and we ran it on low fan speed only. This created a pool of water on the floor under the A/C unit which wasn't there if you ran it on medium or high fan speed. This wasn't a big issue but worth mentioning. We had 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch & 2 dinners here and whilst it definitely isn't a gourmet restaurant the food is plentiful & tasty. I had tired of Malaysian cuisine and enjoyed a simple plate of french fries & Tomato sauce. We did have a problem with people smoking in the restaurant, we detest cigarette smoke & are not used to it. They have signs up around the restaurant that say no smoking but will bring you an ashtray if you want to smoke. One evening people were expressing their disgust at a very selfish individual that continued to smoke throughout the entire meal. The hotel should inforce the no smoking better. On the full day we had here we visited the Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary at Labuk Bay and we found this so worthwhile. The road leading to Labuk Bay is nearby. As far as we are concerned it is an absolute must and beats the Sepilok Orang utan center hands down. The only other place in the world you can see the Proboscis Monkey is in the Singapore Zoo and at Labuk bay you get an incredible close up view of them. It pays to arrive early here too & you can sit through quite a long film that tells the story of how the sanctuary came to be. Even though it goes on a bit it is well worth sitting through it and when you have finished they call the monkeys and they eventually come for their food. There are also other small monkeys here and they sit along the handrail and play with each other. You can even go right up & touch these smaller monkeys; one of them jumped up on a ladies head!! It is rare to be able to get such an excellent view of a primate as you can get here and the Proboscis Monkeys are absolutely fascinating. It is only a 30 minute drive from the hotel & you can arrange a visit there with the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms near to the Restaurant could be noisy

Three of us stayed here for two nights. What stood out most for me were the lush and extensive gardens. It was such a calm and relaxing setting. Loved the open restaurant overlooking the lake. It was also so close to the orangutan sanctuary and made attending both feeding times easy, and this was the main reason for us staying here.

The accommodation, as has been said before, is quite basic but perfectly adequate. We heard fascinating insect and bird sounds in the jungle, which was just behind the chalet. There isn't a lot of choice in places to eat in the immediate area, so we ended up eating all our meals at the resort. The food was only average, but on par with what we experienced throughout Sabah. The breakfast was best because of the egg chef who prepared eggs to order. The staff was okay, not overly friendly and service was patchy. The small bar was limited in choice but we managed to get a reasonable bottle of white wine for dinner.

Overall, we felt we got good value for money and I would stay here again.

We spent 1 night in the Resort, the rooms are spread out around a man made lake or dam with a rainforest garden all around. The garden gives the resort a unique steamy appeal, the lake/dam offers a unique view fron the open restaurant. The Rooms (cabins) are made from timber, timber floors, walls and ceilings and the rooms are spacious. The noticable absence were chairs to sit in the spacious room, we laid on the bed to watch the small TV (tip: bring your binoculars if you want to watch TV from the bed). The bathroom was disappointingly small with a shower/bath with no screen thus showering the toilet as well, the bathplug was jammed shut so you showered ankle deep in water. Like most resorts in east Sabah all are poorly maintained.
The restaurant served good meals and the Resort was next to the Orangutan Sanctuary.
I would stay here again as the room was clean and the room quality is the normal for east Sabah.
