“Beautiful location, light on comforts”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2011

We had no idea where we wanted to stay, we used the Lonely Planet Malayisa guide to pick this place. We wanted to stay down the road but they were booked, so this was the next best option. When we arrived, we were greatly warmly and give a key to our "chalet". The room was clean and tidy but the bed was hard and the bathroom (if you can call it that) was tiny! The shower is not a shower, it is a hose head that you have to wait for hot water to heat up for, and even then it was not hot. You have to hold the hose ubove your head and the unit sits above the toilet. There was a small drain, so everything got wet and water trickled out into the bedroom. If the bathroom had been better and perhaps the bed a little more inviting, we could of stayed there for days. The location is beautiful and the staff are very friendly. The restaurant is gorgeous and the small menu has all you need. We recommend the Mutabak!

We stayed 3 nights in a Deluxe Family room with Aircon. It was low season (monsoon) and we paid $320 per night including breakfast. The normal rate I think is $400. Yes it is expensive for Malaysia, and therefore not fantastic value for money, but once you get over that it is a great place to stay. The grounds are very pretty and the room was actually a little self contained house on stilts with a nice balcony overlooking the rolling hills and forest. We turned off the aircon and slept with the windows open to enjoy waking up to the sound of the forest. The people running the resort were very friendly and the free breakfast was good. We enjoyed dinner there too. The choice is a little limited but the setting and relaxed atmosphere were great. Free wifi in lobby area. Short walk to Orangutand sanctuary. We will stay here again.

The perfect location for the Orang Utan sanctuary and the much less well known Proboscis Monkey sanctuary. The Forest Edge Resort is a quiet and relaxing place with about a dozen wooden chalets distributed around the grounds. The bathroom in ours was rather small, but otherwise the place was lovely.

The manager, Annie, was really helpful and a mine of information and useful contacts. The Resort is quite a way outside Sandakan, but Annie arranged a car and driver for us for the evening so that we could eat at a seafood steamboat restaurant.

We stayed in a deluxe challet for 2 nights... i found their website when i googled places to stay in sepilok... i have just read a few reviews on here now and i am very suprised!!

The chalet was gorgeous, the breakfast and use off outdoot jacuzzi was included in the deluxe room rate.

We found the food to be really nice, and alot cheaper than we were imagining it to be.

The staff were all so lovely and very informative, Annie came and sat with us, and gave us great info, and even drove us to the bus stop one day when it was raining.

I honestly didnt want to leave here, what u see in the photos is what you get. The gardens are gorgeous, and its so lovely to sit eating and drinking listening to the animal noises.

There is also free wifi and the orang utan centre is a 10 minute walk away

i would def come ere again, and with air asia flights so cheap... hopefully soon!

Stayed here for two nights in November 2010 in a double en-suite room in the Long house.

Room was basic, was clean and comfortable and at RM70 per night for two people including breakfast was great value for money.

Had a walk around the site and a nosey at the chalet type accommodation and i have to say, at a minimum of 4x the price of the longhouse rooms i didnt think they were worth it, they were all a fair trek from the main restaurant area and the paths not well lit at night.

The only drawback of the longhouse rooms were that they had a row of windows along the top of the wall into the hallway. It wasnt an issue privacy wise as they were well over 6ft from the ground, but on the first night we had a tour group also staying in the longhouse and they came back very late at night and switched on all the hallway lights waking us up.

The pool is small, slightly bigger than a hot tub, but not big enough or deep enough to swim. A welcome feature after arriving at the resort when we were all baking from the taxi ride none the less.

Food choice at the restaurant was limited but good quality. Beer price was on a par with other similarly priced hotels we've stayed at.

Good location, only a 15-20min walk to the orang utans sanctuary. RM40 taxi ride into Sandakan (approx £8) which is quite expensive, but if your funds are limited this is a better hotel for your money than similar priced backpacker hostels in Sandakan centre and i would prefer to stay here and take a taxi into town than stay in the town itself.

After reading all the glowing review i was a little disapointed for the price we paid. It wasnt all bad for the location is good there are other places on the same road which I didnt check out but may be better. The setting with the garden and animals was good ..theres no pool just a small round jaguzzi with no bubbles.
the beds where very hard , The toliet and shower where clean and the restaraunt was ok.
But it is very difficult to get any information from the owner or her staff as for where to go or the best tours. we said we wanted to go to the jungle to go down the river. She booked a tour for us, which was good of her but it must have been her friend as we where not given any choice. we where not informed that it was 2 and a half hours away. we spent most of the time listening to what the people that where staying overnight at the jungle where going to do when we finally got to our destination.
The jungle tour was great once we got going but we left at 12.30 got back at 9.30 and the tour was 2 hours down the river. so alot of time was wasted it was for the overnight people not day trippers. but obviously they didnt want us to stay overnight somewhere ealse. In saying all this It was ok just not what I expected and maybe I should have looked into it a bit better...It is close to the orangatungs but if you stay in the jungle you would see them and others animals for the same type of accomadation

After being told so many different things that were all pretty disapointing about our intended travel to Sepilok Orangutan Centre (one person told us that there would be about 800 people queing up to view the Orangutans!) we almost didn't go. However, having said that - I usually like to check out a place myself before writing it off so we jumped on a direct flight to Sandakan from K.K (no problem rocking up to the airport and booking with air asia) and took the fourty five minute fiight across the top, passing right over the top of Mt. Kinabalu! (much easier way to get to the top if you ask me!) Caught a taxi out to the Centre with no booking and only a vague sence of where we were thinking of staying. Driver dropped us off at the resort which seemed to be in the middle of the jungle (i spose it sort of is) and booked into the Sepilok Forest Edge Resort with no problems at all. Chose to stay in the little Chalet at the very end of the path so we were totally private and felt like we had the whole place to ourselves! The chalet was lovely, daily housekeeping and breakfast included, and it was only a 10 min walk to the front entrance of the Rehab Centre. Only cost about $35.00 Aus a night and I wish that I could have travelled all over Borneo by day and gone back there each night. The owner "Annie" I think her name is, is lovely and full of useful information. Highly recommend it for value for money, cleanliness and ease of access to the Rehab Centre - which by the way WASN'T packed at all - about 50 people at the most. Meals were a bit light on, but it's so damm hot that you really don't want all that much anyway. There are no shops or much else of anything but the other two resorts have "resturants". The food at Forest Edge was much better than the joint next door though.
