“Excellent location, well maintained but some aspects annoying”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2010

I would stay at this resort again but only if I had my own car, as we did this time.
We chose to stay in the longhouse rooms only because the chalets were ridiculously over priced.
Let me say that most hotels/resorts in Sabah had bumped their prices up for June/July and some were no where near the prices being quoted by Tripadvisor. What made this peculiar was that most were nearly empty and wouldn't budge off those inflated prices.
The Long house rooms were clean and well ventilated with the fan providing enough coolness for comfortable sleeping at night. The bathrooms were large and clean without any mildew or stuffy smell you get in a lot of Asian hotels.
Wanting 10 ringitt extra per person to use the small spa was a bit steep and I refused to
pay it as did my daughters.
The food was expensive and below standard if not insulting. My daughter ordered a murtabak but was given a roti...........like, we didn't know the difference !!
The beer and drinks were strangely very expensive. We had dinner at the Nature Resort down the road and was very impressed with the selection, price and quality. The beer was nearly 3 ringitts cheaper.
One very positive aspect of this place is that the manager's husband owns the Kinabatangan Jungle Camp so you can organise a trip out there directly with her.

We realised that the budget option was going to be noisy with cubicle walls not quite reaching to the top and no air con. It is really stifling in this part of the world, because it is inland. So we upgraded to a chalet because we were only there one night, but the whole thing cost us nearly 300 MYR including food and the load of washing which cost 65 MYR for no more than 3 or 4 kilos. That is more than I pay at home. The room itself is really comfortable and nice, that I am not commenting on. The power felt as if it was struggling and the air con kept surging and almost stopping. We had no alcohol at all to keep the price down also, but food here was expensive. They can charge what they want once you are there. The food is quite nice, as are the staff. Yes they sit around and look at the TV, but there is not much else to do. It is also not their fault that the visitors are cash cows. The owners are seriously cashing in on the Orangutans near by. I really hate giving it the thumbs down, because the locals need this job. But how on earth do you justify 65 MYR for a load of washing? The going rate in Sandakan and KK was about 8 MYR for a similar amount. In short, we should have stayed one more night at the May Fair Hotel and caught a local bus or taxi out to the Orangutans. It is only about 25 MYR by taxi and will save you some cash. I would not stay in Sepilok again.

I stayed at Sepilok for 1 night and really regret booking my first night at the awful London hotel in Sandakan. On my arrival to Sepilok I was greeted by the smiley and friendly girls who work there. The location of this place is simply breathtaking....no words can describe the tranquil and lush jungle around the chalets, reception/restaurant and the main guest house.

I've booked a room in the main house as most of the time was dedicated to visiting the orangutans and proboscis sanctuaries, plus being a solo traveler a chalet wasn't really needed. The room in the main house was very clean and reasonable size for a short stay. There is a fan on the wall, which saved me from the heat for a few hours in afternoon. Although you can hear people walking down the corridor and opening/closing their doors - it really wasn't a problem, as by around 10-11pm everyone was asleep, so don't be put off by that. At the end of the day - you paying only 14 GBP/night for staying in the middle of the jungle!

Food: Ok, the choice of food is a little limited, BUT the food is all fresh and delicious. You do need to 'order' your evening meal in advance by about 5pm, which isn't a problem at all. Since I'm trying to avoid meat when I can - my favourite food at Sepilok were a big plates of fresh fruit salad with mango, papaya, watermelon, bananas, etc...yuum, dribbling even now when thinking about it :-))

Staff: I cant praise them enough for their hospitality, smiles, advice on where to go and what to see, help with arranging taxis, tours, etc. The girls even helped me to save some money by organising a tour to the proboscis monkeys sanctuary with another solo guest, i.e. we split the taxi fare between us. After staying there just over 28 hrs I felt like being part of their little friendly 'family'.

Would I recommend this lodge to others? ABSOLUTELY YES!!! Should I ever end up going to Borneo - I will make sure to stay at least a couple of night at Sepilok lodge to unwind from a hectic big city life, enjoy the nature and friendly smiles :-)))

Whoever wrote a few negative reviews below maybe should analyse their perception and attitude to others first, before leaving negative comments as they did!

To the girls: THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR THE GREAT TIME AT YOUR PARADISE! :-)

Accom was great, with humming birds and huge bees joining you on the flower edged walk to breakfast.

Staff were so friendly, they must have known you in a previous life.

Annie was very supportive and willing to help arrange any tourist trips.

Mr Azemi of 'Borneo Star Holiday' really looked after us on the tours and was a lot cheaper than you would find without Annie's help. Normal taxis for tours are expensive.

We stayed in 2 different standard cabins both were of excellent quality. Food here is good and an easy walk to the orang centre( we went in the afternoon twice once dry once raining and far better viewing in the wet so don't let rain put you off) I cannot recommend the rainforest discovery centre enough, barely mentioned in guidebooks it deserves at least half a day, preferably a whole one. Masses of birdlife easier to see here that in most of the country, lots of nice walking trails and an impressive canopy walk, we were sorry we didn't have more time there.
We also did a 2night kinabantangan trip at the jungle lodge owned by Annies hisband - fantastic - see separate review

We stayed here for 2 nights while visiting the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Great place to stay within walking distance of the SORC. As I booked quite late, we did not get a family room but we were offered a basic chalet (180MYR) with 2 extra mattresses in for 20MYR each which included breakfast. That worked out absolutely fine and the chalet was suitable for the 2 nights.
Huge grounds, beautiful setting. You are surrounded by birds, beautiful plants and jungle sounds. We felt the place had a really nice atmosphere - laid back but really friendly. The staff seem very happy there. Other reviews have noted that the service was not good but we weren't looking eg. to have our bags taken to our room, etc so did not notice anything lacking in the service. Food was good - not gastronomic, but absolutely fine. Menu a little limited but as most people stay just for a couple of days, it's fine. They have a very small pool there which was great for us and the kids to cool off for a while, after a day's wildlife watching.
Booking process with Annie via email was very efficient. She also arranged our transport to and from, plus our next stay at the Kinabatangan Jungle Camp as they are linked (she seems to manage the SFER, her husband seems to manage the KBC!).
