Beautifully situated close to Shaftesbury is a very cosy pub, they had a great selection of ales and wines and to our bonus were dog friendly!

I had lasagne with chips, which was perfect, nice and hot and chips cooked to perfection, partner had salad, with goats cheese, they pride themselves on locally fresh produced food which shows, very nice, will definetely
Come again!!!

I love coming here and indulging in a spot of beer battered fish and chips or sampling the amazing terrines that are always on offer. The atmosphere is lovely, especially on cold wintery days or nights, and with the roaring log fire, its easy to stay here and completely forget the outside world. The service is top notch and the added bonus of it being a dog friendly pub, means that every member of you family can come in and enjoy themselves. Have been coming here for over a year and can't complain about anything, keep up the good work!

We went for lunch on a busy Saturday between Christmas and New Year, so were glad we had phoned and booked a table. Parking isn't the easiest here, but having driven further along the lane we managed to park easily enough. We were shown to a table near the log fire, very welcome on a cold, rainy day!

Unlike previous reviewers we found the service to be very good - prompt, cheerful and friendly. You place your order at the bar (it is after all a pub rather than a restaurant), choosing from a printed menu plus two specials boards. This covers a range of foods, including starters. Main courses include burgers, steaks, curries, fish and chips, pies, pasta and specials of the day (e.g. Halibut on grilled vegetables).

Our table was already laid with cutlery and cloth serviettes, also fresh flowers, a nice touch. The food arrived promptly and all four main courses ordered looked and tasted delicious. Accompaniments were offered and we were left to enjoy our food. Plates were cleared in due course and dessert menus offered. There are about five pudding choices, all delicious sounding, as well as a cheese board and a choice of around a dozen flavours of local ice cream. We were quite full and ordered just ice cream, but this was very good indeed.

Real ale (incuding Palmers of Dorset) is served in the Fox and Hounds, and was much enjoyed by the beer drinkers in our group. We lingered over tea and coffee and eventually were politely reminded that the pub was closing (in fact it already had, but we were so comfortable we hadn't noticed!)

Would certainly recommend a visit to this pub, but probably best to book a table if you want to eat.

Typical english pub with stone floors and wooden tables, very clean and welcoming
Visited for a birthday dinner and also because they advertise a good understanding of gluten free.
Nothing was too much trouble, owner/chef ran through the menu and specials board explaining the gluten free options and we ordered confidentally.
Although it was a Monday night they were fairly busy but we did not have to wait long at all for our starters to arrive. Food was excellent, served hot and plentuiful.
A plus was they allow dogs inside so our 2 border terriers were allowed to join us.

We were pleased to finally find this pub, it has a beautiful setting. We initially were just going to stop for a cold beer on our way back home, but after hearing other customers comment that the food was delicious, we decided to order dinner.

This turned out to be a big mistake! We asked if we could have a table and to order some food. We were told to sit where we wanted and to stay at the bar whilst ordering. We were offered no menu, nor were we shown to a table.

I ordered the ricotta and basil pie, which turned out to be nothing more than a extra thick omelette with some sort of basil sauce on it. My partner ordered a steak which arrived cold.

We ordered a bottle of Sancerre which was offered to us warm. The barman served it in a wine cooler but seriously.......room temperature, white wine at £25 a bottle on a day that's scorching hot?

I emailed the pub directly the next day to pass on my concerns. To date, they have ignored me.

The only positives I can pass on from this place are: the view is extraordinary, the ale is yummy and the chips are nice. The pub fails on every other aspect! I will never return there, nor will I recommend it to anyone I know!
