I was so disappointed in this place! First of all... the people who work at the front office are extremely rude, except for one gentleman who was very helpful with restaurant information! The activity director couldn't give any advice on anything to do on the island. It was like asking information from a tourist! All she could do is read out of the book! Then send us somewhere and we were even able to participate
The breakfast was horrible, the staff was worse in that place!! Continental Breakfast was supposed to be included and if you didn't order anything else they wouldn't even refill your coffee or get you more bread!I Over the 8 days we stayed there we ordered full breakfast maybe 5 of the 8 times but did not want it everyday. Our family has never been treated so bad and we were paying close to 500 dollars a night over the New years Holiday! Don't get me started on the ants and bugs at the restaurant continental table and in the room. We brought some Christmas candy and it was infested with ants in a matter of a few hours The cleaning staff and handy guys were the only friendly people on the property! I would not even spend my worst enemy's money here! Do your self a favor and pay just a little more and stay at the Radisson down the street!

Room Tip: Just Don't

This resort is not what you would categorize as a 4 star, however the rooms are large and spacious and it is a 2 minute walk to the best beach in St Martin. The staff are very friendly and helpful and it is ideally located if you wish to visit Grand Case or Anse Marcel (by car) and there is a supermarket and other amenities very close by. The path from the hotel leads you directly to the Coco Beach bar, where the sun beds are complimentary for hotel guests in exchange for drinks. It is by far the best service on the beach and everything can be charged to the room, which is very handy.
Each group of 4 rooms has a small pool attached to it, we didn't see anyone using these, everyone was on the beach. Although this might appeal to families with small children, we found that it broke up the hotel as there was no communal meeting or gathering place.
The restaurant on site, L'Astrolabe is small, but the service is great. The food for dinner is excellent but quite pricey. However their Continental breakfast (included with the room)is the bare minimum. It was exactly the same cereal (Corn Flakes), bread and croissants everyday as well as the same fruits in the fruit salad. A bit of variety would have been very welcome, but i guess they wanted you to buy something off the breakfast menu at an additional charge!
One thing to note is that the French side of the island is a lot more expensive than the Dutch for eating out. As an incentive, a lot of the excursions and restaurants are offering 1 to 1 on the exchange for a euro to dollar. This is essentially a 35% saving so worth paying in dollars.

Room Tip: Definitively opt for an ocean view, if you are not an early sleeper go fro something nearer the beac...

I visited St. Martin in November, just before things start to pick up for their peak season. The resort wasn't nearly full, but we were put in a room as far from the beach as possible. Our villa room was very spacious and was clean, but overall the resort is starting to look a little tired. The semi-private pool was nice, but the filter didn't work most of our time there. When we asked the hotel about this, they said it cycles on and off, but it was off for a couple of days. The "free breakfast" was pretty bad, really just a teaser to get you into the restaurant and order and pay for additional food.

Definitely NOT the 4-stars they advertise. The property is in great need of maintenance: rust everywhere, the sliding screen door sticks, lots of rust, feral cats living under our lanai and marking same (stinky). Staff NOT helpful--would not change a 20-Euro note, would not check us in to our departing flight, would not give directions to off-site restaurants. Restaurant on site is extremely expensive and snooty, beach restaurants not open for dinner. Esmeralda claims that "a dozen" beach restaurants will put your meal on your room, but we found only two--the others demanded payment on the spot.

My first visit to St. Martin (previously a Turks Caicos guy). I was nervous going to St. Martin for a lot of reasons buy my week at the Esmeralda could not have been nicer. The staff: all very nice. The rooms: very large and upgraded. The private pool at each villa: not where you'd spend your day but perfect for that "after-beach" swim. Astrolab Restaurant: Awesome!! Thomas and Christopher are excellent hosts and the food is very good!! Coco Beach Club (the beach club where you get the free chairs): very nice! Yohan and Tony will treat you right! The beach is excellent and you are at the quiet end of Orient Bay but close enough to the more "party" sections. Orient Village (about a 2 minute drive): has a about 5 great restaurants. I'm already thinking about coming back!

the room is nothing special. seems old, doors stick, bath tube doesn't hold water but it worked as a place to get some sleep. The semi-private pool was very nice and the location on the beach was perfect. Not close to much else but was exactly what we wanted. The employees were all fantastic, very helpful and eager to assist. We accidentally left a tablet on the beach and was put aside for us to recover. Everything you need is close enough to walk to except nightlife. There were some beach bars open a little later but not what you would call "night life". Was perfect for what we wanted.

My wife and I have stayed at the Esmeralda several times. The quality of stay at first was great but fell off 3 years ago or so. The property now has new owners I think and everything has been refurbished, the security is good and we had a blast like the old days.

We will go back again now because of the upgrades. We even sent our son and his new wife there on their honeymoon.

Room Tip: Some pools are better for skinny dipping than others. Check out a property map. Don't stay nex...
