“A very friendly welcome”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

Having hit, yet again appalling weather just as we scrambled off the bus in Haputale, I have to praise a warm welcome at the Sri Lak and lots of care taken to ensure that we had a good stay despite the howling gale.

The room was very comfortable (not the most expensive and definitely not damp) and this was probably the best bed we had in Sri Lanka. The hot shower worked, we got extra cosy blankets and the staff were really helpful, knowledgeable and jolly. We enjoyed the food, although it is a bit expensive but they rang the changes on the vegetable curries which were properly spiced and served by a very nice waiter who was very knowledgeable about the area.

We would have loved sitting on our balcony for the amazing view if it could have been seen until the morning we were leaving. Only downside was the 5am call to prayer from the nearby Mosque but, that said, mostly you do want to be up to go walking before the mist comes down.

My room was great - best in Sri Lanka. The water was warm, though not powerful. The food is definitely overpriced. Go to the restaurant over the bakery in town for good and cheap food with friendly service. The problem with this guest house is they are pretty agressive about arranging tours. Any time they see, they ask about it. They try to prevent you from meeting up with other travelers to share a tuk tuk and if you arrange a tuk tuk from town for a fair price, they try to convince you they won't show so you'll take one of their connections. Current rates- 700 for a drop at liptons seat, 2000 for a go & come (with wait) at worlds end. The hostel will try to charge you more.

The room was reasonable for the price 1800Rs in the new block. The bed was soft, the room clean and views wonderful. However, the water was warm at best (hence I didn't shower in 3 days...) and the room was somewhat damp. The resturant was pretty expensive for dinner and breakfast and i got the feeling the management were all about the money. Tip, arrange your rickshaw to Lipton's seat from a tuk tuk driver in town and your taxi to Worlds End directly through a driver and not the hotel. We heard some stories from other travellers about them being charge extortionate prices thought the hotel.

The Sri Lak view Holiday Inn has accommodation to suit all budget wallets! We choose the cheaper of the 3 rooms, as it wasn't the delux ($$) and the cheapest room looked airier than the middle budget rooms - also all the rooms had that damp feeling, so no matter where you slept you would notice it. The hotel itself has amazing potential - maybe we just didn't see it as the weather wasn't great while we were there! However, our room was quite big and quite clean as was the bathroom (with hot water)
We had dinner and breakfast here and both were OK. The biggest put off was that the staff and tuk-tuk dirvers were quite pushy about booking a ride. One driver came up to us while we were eating our dinner to see if we wanted to book anything...
This place is OK for a night or two....

Two nights booked very quickly became one after we checked in. The room was quite damp, the walls were blackened with the mould. It did have a warm shower though. Unfortunately we never saw the view a the fog was quite heavy.

Dinner was good, but we had this in the old section as he new extension is just awful. The charm some reviewers speak of is nom existent. This was confirmed by a German lady that stayed here 8 years ago.

The village has nothing to offer really. If it weren't or the tea plantations.......

We returned here having stayed at the Sri Lak 9yrs ago. Like our visit visit, the best thing was the view and the service from the young wait staff. We stayed for three nights.

The rooms are clean and beds comfortable and warm. The pots of tea were large and the view amazing. Early rising is a must, to see the escarpment before the cloud rises, and is ensured anyway by the 5am call to prayer from the nearby Mosque. Not a place for a sleep in. But most guests are rising early anyhow for trips to Horton Plains, World's End or Lipton's Seat. The clouds roll in by 10am, so you do need to head out early to get the full impact of these gorgeous places.

The breakfast is omlet, fruit and toast. The lunch/dinner menu is fairly ordinary guesthouse choices. The layout of the hotel is odd, with dark corridors and strange sitting areas. But the point of being in Haputale is being out and about anyway. The service from the young waiter was warm and attentive. The management was stand-offish and there was a collection of 'middle management'??? whose purpose I couldn't quite workout. There wasn't a female employee in sight, which I have to admit made me a little uncomfortable. The service and decor could do with a 'feminine touch'. Everything seemed to be done by the same young fellow...

SriLak seems to have booking arrangements with large tour groups and hosts the occasional local wedding party. They confidently organise tours and tuk tuks at fair prices. In general, a functional place to stay. Haputale is a sweet little village waiting for someone to open up a mid-sized guesthouse with a 'bit of heart and atmosphere'.

Room Tip: There is a family room on the ground floor corner. Large and has easy access to a table for breakfas...
