We returned here having stayed at the Sri Lak 9yrs ago. Like our visit visit, the best thing was the view and the service from the young wait staff. We stayed for three nights.
The rooms are clean and beds comfortable and warm. The pots of tea were large and the view amazing. Early rising is a must, to see the escarpment before the cloud rises, and is ensured anyway by the 5am call to prayer from the nearby Mosque. Not a place for a sleep in. But most guests are rising early anyhow for trips to Horton Plains, World's End or Lipton's Seat. The clouds roll in by 10am, so you do need to head out early to get the full impact of these gorgeous places.
The breakfast is omlet, fruit and toast. The lunch/dinner menu is fairly ordinary guesthouse choices. The layout of the hotel is odd, with dark corridors and strange sitting areas. But the point of being in Haputale is being out and about anyway. The service from the young waiter was warm and attentive. The management was stand-offish and there was a collection of 'middle management'??? whose purpose I couldn't quite workout. There wasn't a female employee in sight, which I have to admit made me a little uncomfortable. The service and decor could do with a 'feminine touch'. Everything seemed to be done by the same young fellow...
SriLak seems to have booking arrangements with large tour groups and hosts the occasional local wedding party. They confidently organise tours and tuk tuks at fair prices. In general, a functional place to stay. Haputale is a sweet little village waiting for someone to open up a mid-sized guesthouse with a 'bit of heart and atmosphere'.
