“Best meal i had in Sri Lanka”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

We stayed here for 1 night in August 2013 before setting off to World's End the next morning. The dinner we had here was the best meal we had in Sri Lanka. We had a huge spread of curries, vegetables, salad with fresh lettuce from the garden and awesome papadums. Note: If you want to have dinner at the guesthouse, you'll have to order beforehand in the afternoon.

The elderly couple who run the place are welcoming and warm. We had a little problem with our shower's water pressure which made bathing tricky but it was something we could overlook on account of the delicious dinner!

Because we had to set off early the next morning, the guesthouse prepared sandwiches for us to takeaway for breakfast. Even those sandwiches were delicious!

I stayed for two nights and felt very much at home in this lovely, welcoming place. The food was excellent, the atmosphere in the dining room was very homely (important for a solo traveller!). There were books to borrow, a selection of seating available in the lounge area. The owners are very helpful. It is a little bit 'out of town' but there's a short cut along the top road at the back, which makes a pleasant walk, and gives you a chance to admire local gardens and the magnificent view. The rooms all have balconies and a pleasant view, but it isn't actually the 'big' view!
Wifi is quite weak in the rooms, but you can find good signal downstairs in the restaurant area.
Just one slight criticism; there was no furniture in the room, apart from the bed and a towel rail. This meant I had to open up my bag on the floor, and spread my things out around it. This could be a problem for anyone with a bad back. For a very low cost, the owners should put a table in each room!

We are close to the end of a 5 month trip around South America, India and Sri Lanka and this is one of our favourite places we have stayed in all that time!!

As advised by other reviews we called ahead and got picked up at the station. I cannot recommend this highly enough as it would be very difficult to find walking from the station by yourself.

Still on location; the location is good, once you have found it. A little further out of town than other places, but still only 10-15min walk from train station and everywhere in haputale. Nice enough view of the balconies, but a bit blocked by trees (I'd much rather this than they were cut down simply to please tourists).

The guesthouse itself is really lovely. Nice dining area downstairs and also lounge area with sofas, widescreen tv (perfect for watching the ashes cricket) along with a bookshelf and magazine shelf full of 2nd hand stuff.

The room was also lovely. Nice and large, good bathroom and a small balcony with chairs. Very clean.

The best part, however, was the dinner. For Rs300 you can get their rice and curry. We did this both nights we were there and whilst the first nights was good, the second night we had one of the best meals from our entire 5 month trip - the jackfruit curry was particularly fantastic.

Mr amarasinghe and his wife were both very friendly, I really highly recommend this guesthouse!!

Only slight downside is the wifi signal is very weak. Have to be right next to the router, but wifi has been poor throughout all of Hill Country.

Would also recommend going for a walk in the tea fields you see directly in front and to the right off your balcony, you get brilliant views!!

Travelled July 2013, as a couple.

Old couple run very good this hotel. We stayed 3 nights and pay 1500 rupies for 1 night. It was clean and silence room with hot water but nothing special view from private balcony. Close to Dambatenne tea factory, Word´s End and Lipton seat. Good simple food (rice and curry, noodles, eastern and western breakfast). Contact number: +94 57 226 8175 or +94 777 763 397. Address: Thambapillai Avenue.

Rooms are big and clean, also a big bathroom. The rooms have a small balcony with 2 chairs. The food here is great, and not so expensive. Very friendly staff. Breakfast is only 200 and diner 300 rps. It's not far from the railway station, and a bit out of the town, so very quiet.
