Els Cacadors de Ribes
Ranked #1 of 5 Hotels in Ribes de Freser
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 29, 2010

This was our third visit to El Cacadors for a week of hiking in the ‘Val de Nuria’. We have always enjoyed this hotel which is handily situated near the center of Ribes de Freser and is a 5 minute walk from the cog railway station to Nuria. It is a small family run hotel with very modern well appointed comfortable rooms, and a restaurant which offers a tasty simple robust local cuisine in a very informal atmosphere. The staff is friendly, welcoming, enthusiastic, very hard working, and always willing to help out.

The lodging area of the hotel is decorated in a very modern 'boutique' manner and all the 'gold' rooms we have had feature the latest in baths, showers, TV etc etc. Luckily they also featured plenty of odd fittings for us to hang our wet hiking gear on!

If you are on half board there is a menu which changes every day offering 4 or 5 choices for each of the three courses and also includes a fresh mixed salad as well as wine or water. They have many interesting local dishes including bean or vegetable stews (which also contain sausage, ham etc), and some really good fish and meat.

The hotel guests seem to come from all over the world, but gratefully the Spanish dominate, especially at weekends and for lunch. Service is very efficient and the noise level is considerable at times due to the large number of families or groups of enthusiastic ‘adventurers’. If this atmosphere is not refined enough for you they also have a small adjacent ‘a la carte' restaurant.

The breakfast buffet is very comprehensive, from cereals to anchovies, bread to chocolate cake, and tea to wine…you really have to watch your waist line!

As is usual in mountain hotels the atmosphere is very informal so leave behind you suits or frocks as the case may be and join the great unwashed carnivores, hikers, birders, bikers etc that come to the Val de Nuria and enjoy a stay at El Cacadors. … in spite of the weather we have always done!

We chose to eat here rather than our well-reviewed hotel based strictly on internet reviews in 3 languages. It's a short, pleasant walk from the heart of town but absolutely conceals from the outside what awaits one on the inside.

We arrived precisely at the 20:30 opening time. By roughly 21:00 the restaurant was full and there was a small queue to get in. The octaves reached their crescendo around 22:00, by which point we were deliriously delving into our dessert.

We've just returned from a 7 day trip through the Garrotxa and Costa del Maresme and the meal here stands out far and beyond anything we had, including in Barcelona. You can forgive the almost riotous atmosphere for the extraordinary ambiance and impeccable, hospitable service. Service was rapid but never hurried. We were amongst the first to arrive and amongst some of the last to leave but we were never rushed through our courses, despite waiting guests. No course was whisked away or heaped on before one or the other was terminated. And it was all very gracious and patient and tasteful.

Dinner is strictly a la carte but they do offer more than a half dozen house specials on the a la carte menu. I would strongly urge the specials for copious, homemade, Catalan cooking.

We found the value to be excellent, the house wine exceptional (bread and one litre of house wine is 1,95 euro per person), their 'green salad' the best with shrimp, olives, alphalfa sprouts!!! (we live in France now and they're a rarity, indeed), a delightful, picante banderilla, egg, tomatos, grated carrot and mixed greens... My husband had spinach canelloni that was delicious and hearty but the outright star of the evening was my roast lamb. I honestly have never tasted anything quite so delicious. It was absolutely, delectably melt-in-your mouth and I am still thinking about it today! However, if we thought that was the end of it, we were in for a delightful surprise: dessert. A warm chocolate cake beautifully presented. Excellent cafe solo rounded it all out. All of this came in under 40 euro before tip.

Hardly congruous but necessary to mention were the immaculate Art Deco, beautifully scented and clean bathrooms (ladies).

I will try and book further in advance the next time so as to be able to stay in this hotel as well as just eat here.

We stayed at the hotel in order to be close to the special train that goes to the Vall de Nuria. We stayed in the silver rooms in the 3-star section of the hotel. The rooms were lovely, spacious, clean, modern and cozy. Lovely dining room and had a deliscious dinner. Breakfast was a bit disappointing as there were no eggs and lots of store-bought cookies/donuts and even candy (?) instead of some home-made pastries, which would better suit a place of this quality. The kids liked the jacuzzi on the roof at night and the lounge with Internet connection and a computer. Very helpful staff. Water in jacuzzi and shower wasn't hot enough, not sure why. Convenient little grocery across the street and train station one street away, drive to Queralbs for a beautiful ride, not much else to do in town.
