“Not bad hotel, lovely location - Very Smelly!”
Reviewed October 21, 2013

This hotel has seen better days. From the outside it looks quite modern, on the inside certain things are updated, but in general, it's old fashioned.

It's a pity because the location is wonderful, right on the banks of a river and with a wonderful terrace with waterfall out the back.

There is a games room, which is a nice touch and downstairs there is a lounge with fireplace. We had an October break, which meant that the fireplace wasn't lit and there was a bit of a musty smell to the room.

Luckily it was a warm October as we had to sleep with the windows open all night! At least it was mild, as our young child's bed was next to the window. The reason we had to keep the window open was the incredibly overpowering smell of the cleaning liquid/air freshener. As soon as we walked into the room it was like being hit in the face. We had to not only open the window, but also open the door to the corridor to let the current through. We mentioned this to reception, but weren't offered a room change, only an explanation that it was the cleaning ladies.

I imagine that the smell was to cover up the smells from the kitchen, which were very mild, and would have been preferable to the awful flowery smell!

The only reason we were able to sleep there over night was because we left the blind and window open whist we were out and as mentioned before, the window open all night. my husband even wet a damp towel and wiped down all the surfaces in the room to try to take the smell away.

The corridors were immensely smelly and we rolled up a towel in front of the door in the hope that the smell wouldn't come in from the outside.

I can't believe that nobody else commented on the smell, we had it in the back of our throats the whole afternoon!

Breakfast was simple, with toast, croissants, coffee and juices. It would have been nice to have some cold meats, which are typical of the area.

I can't comment on the restaurant as we ate out in a wonderful restaurant around the corner.

The village is wonderful and has some great walks, perfect for a weekend away.

One thing I thought was very good, was the compiled brochure in the bedrooms, which was very complete with local information.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the front of the hotel. We overlooked a road at the back of the hotel.

We stayed here in order to dance at a dance festival, so were a group of 18 dancers and musicians. From the outside the hotel looks rather forbidding, but inside a different story. The staff were friendly and helpful and spoke English. The room was a reasonable size for the tariff, bed comfy and large bathroom with good shower. Glad of air conditioning. No problems with noise, either inside or out - all we could hear was the river. Good breakfast, evening meals pleasant but unspectacular. Nice little swimming pool and also small terrace garden overlooking river. We parked car at road alongside hotel. Pretty little town with large square. Not very touristy in summer. Dance festival Vall Dansa was excellent, well organised, good variety of dance and music. Danced in town and also at the Vall de Nuria, spectacular scenery.

The owners of the hotel are very helpful and nice. They offer to help us anytime, offered nice place to put our snowboards, etc. The localization on the hotel is beautiful, in front of the river, and in the basement there is a "bonfire" that kept us warm.
The hotel is very clean as well. There is also a swimming pool in the back of the hotel, very nice! And there was a Christmas decoration, very beautiful. The restaurant seemed to be nice, but was a little bit expensive and we didn't tried the food.

The bad things were that was a little bit cold in the bedrooms, and even after asking in the reception, the problem wasn't solved. The walls between the bedrooms were too tiny and we could unfortunately listen all the moves on the others bedrooms (not nice at all - some guy was snoring badly!!). The breakfast was too small, 1 croissant per person and 2 small toasts. And a couple of coffee.

I wouldn't say it is a great hotel but it is OK. Clean and as the previous review states newly refurbished. Our room was kind of small but we were 3 adults so maybe because of that. The location is very nice near the river and near the little nice cafe in front. Ribes de Freser is a very nice base for hiking in the moutains around with or without the Mountain train.

The main disadvantage is that you enter the hotel trough the restaurant.
The Hotel is very clean with new furniture & plasma TV in every room.
The staff is very polite, you can eat lunch & supper at the Hotel (it has a relatively cheap restaurant).
The prize for the room is fare, you can pay another 8 euro per person and include breakfast.
No need to pay the hotel for parking, there is a lot of parking place near the Hotel.
The Hotel is at a 10 minute walk from the railway station to Vall de Nuria. If you buy the tickets at the Hotel you get a 10% discount
On the whole I recomend the hotel

  • Liked — The location near the Cremeria (the train to the Vall de Nuria)
  • Disliked — The entrance to the Hotel
