This hotel has seen better days. From the outside it looks quite modern, on the inside certain things are updated, but in general, it's old fashioned.
It's a pity because the location is wonderful, right on the banks of a river and with a wonderful terrace with waterfall out the back.
There is a games room, which is a nice touch and downstairs there is a lounge with fireplace. We had an October break, which meant that the fireplace wasn't lit and there was a bit of a musty smell to the room.
Luckily it was a warm October as we had to sleep with the windows open all night! At least it was mild, as our young child's bed was next to the window. The reason we had to keep the window open was the incredibly overpowering smell of the cleaning liquid/air freshener. As soon as we walked into the room it was like being hit in the face. We had to not only open the window, but also open the door to the corridor to let the current through. We mentioned this to reception, but weren't offered a room change, only an explanation that it was the cleaning ladies.
I imagine that the smell was to cover up the smells from the kitchen, which were very mild, and would have been preferable to the awful flowery smell!
The only reason we were able to sleep there over night was because we left the blind and window open whist we were out and as mentioned before, the window open all night. my husband even wet a damp towel and wiped down all the surfaces in the room to try to take the smell away.
The corridors were immensely smelly and we rolled up a towel in front of the door in the hope that the smell wouldn't come in from the outside.
I can't believe that nobody else commented on the smell, we had it in the back of our throats the whole afternoon!
Breakfast was simple, with toast, croissants, coffee and juices. It would have been nice to have some cold meats, which are typical of the area.
I can't comment on the restaurant as we ate out in a wonderful restaurant around the corner.
The village is wonderful and has some great walks, perfect for a weekend away.
One thing I thought was very good, was the compiled brochure in the bedrooms, which was very complete with local information.
