I would give this hotel 3.5 stars if TripAdvisor let me.
A hotel built in the ?1960s? Located a couple of rows back from Calella de Palafrugell's front line, about 10 minutes walk to Calella's several (small) beaches the and numerous restaurants and a steep walk back, that's no reflection on the hotel it's just the way Calella is made. Guest population mainly Catalan / Spanish with a smattering of English and French.

Generally clean hotel, all public areas are easily accessible and airy.
Can only comment on one room which was large enough for me, my wife and teenage daughter but the bathroom was in need of TLC due to its age. Very small balcony overlooking roofs and car park but understand bigger balconies with better views available at greater cost.
Lovely, mature, well tended gardens with plenty of trees providing shade where necessary
Good size main swimming pool with small kids pool adjacent. Main pool was usually clean but the amount of chlorine dumped in the main pool the day before we left was literally eye-watering!
One large, light and bright, restaurant on sub ground floor overlooking pool area, meals can be taken outside.
Breakfast choice is very extensive and few people should feel the need to pay the supplements for extras such as fried eggs and bacon or omelettes.
Half board is mandatory (at least during the season) default is dinner but lunch can be taken instead as long as reception advised by midday. Food VERY hit and miss, seafood rice and noodle dishes were far too salty. For the rest of the food the chef(s) seem to be trying to do nouvelle but end up doing it quite badly, the best food was average and the rest far from it.
The general (working) staff are a credit to the hotel and almost always have a smile on their faces.

I cannot understand the mentality of people who go to a typically Spanish resort and complain because there are no English channels on their television or the staff cannot speak English very well. I have not noticed when staying anywhere in England that we cater for the Spanish. We have always found this hotel superb in every way and will be returning again this year. Also if people consulted the hotel website instead of booking through an agent they would see that you pay extra for the rooms with terrace and sea view and should not expect these facilities at the cheaper price. Perhaps Benidorn would suit them better and leave this part of the Costa Brava for those who really appreciate it!

Room Tip: Book through the Hotel website where you can choose and pay for the best rooms.

Spent 6 days here half-board. Room was one with a small window, facing the road, not too large, but kept very clean. One drawback of the room was the design of the one chair, with such a low back that it gave me a dull backache, and another minus was that the television had only Spanish-speaking channels, and the reception of these varied. Also the internet connection in the room was weak at times. However, there were 3 laptops in the foyer for use by guests, free of charge. I didn't like the 7 Euros per day charge for using the hotel car-park, so opted to park on the road outside, saving myself 42 Euros over the 6 days, (around £33.)
On the plus side, the breakfast was very good, lots of choice, although if you wanted eggs.bacon etc there was, disappointingly, a 4 Euro surcharge. The evening dinners were excellent, cordon bleu standard, with a choice of four starters/main/desserts.
The gardens are lovely, well-kept, and the staff are very friendly without exception. Children are well catered for with swings, their own shallow pool, table-tennis and so on.
Will probably return and opt for a room facing the garden.
The beaches close to this hotel are in the main small coves, and can become quite crowded, so for a lovely, long 3 mile stretch of sandy beach, I recommend Platges de Pals, around 6 miles away, but worth the trip.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the garden (and the sea in the distance). I did ask, but was told they were all taken by non-internet bookings, a strange excuse in my view, but do try anyway.

We have just arrived home from a weeks stay at the Alga and I have to say it is what it says on the tin, Three Star. After making preferences with Flight Line for a garden or Sea room, we ended up with a room with a view of the car park and a very noisy road. The room had just been refurbished and in fairness the shower and bed were very good. However the room was tiny with one chair no balcony and a small window. The smell of urine was overpowering at night in the shower/toilet area and when I asked for another room, I was told the hotel was full. There was no evidence of the hotel being full in fact at times it looked empty. Three days later I asked again to be moved because the smell was making me feel sick at night along with the noise of the traffic. We were given a room with a lovely view but with no fridge or safe on the condition that we moved back to the other room one day before we were leaving. We paid over £1400 for 1 week HB and had to pack and unpack 6 times. There are NO english speaking channels on the TV and the staff struggle to understand what you are saying so brush up on your spanish. The food in the evening is served luke warm and nothing to write home about. The positive things about this hotel are the lovely staff, waiters/ waitresses and maids who do their best to make you feel welcome. There is a nice garden area and the fresh fruit and bread at breakfast is delicious but no eggs unless you pay extra. The rooms are kept very clean but not so sure about the pool. No entertainment in the evening and very litle music is played throughout the hotel. This hotel is a steep walk up from the beach but so are most of the hotels in the area. Would I stay at the Alga again? I doubt it.

Really nice Hotel, we spent only one night there during our motobike-trip. The room is big and clean, the bed was good, everything was nice decorated. Big breakfast buffet, really good stuff! nice Hotelgarden and pool, and frendly staff at the reception. we got a great price through booking.com, so there is definitely nothing for us to complain about.
5 minutes walking-distance to the sea and to nice restaurants.

Thank you very much from Germany
