this is our 2nd time returning to Calella and staying at Hotel Sant Roc. We finished up 3 weeks of travel here to recover before getting back to reality. We simply love this hotel and town and cant wait to return. The hotel is beautiful. Breakfast on the Seaside Terrace is just a perfect way to start the day, not to mention the breakfast itself is AMAZING!

The staff here are incredibly friendly and helpful. the hotel is owned/operated by a lovely couple who are there daily and are constantly seen clearing/setting tables, chatting with the employees, makings coffees, etc. Really great vibes from everyone.

free parking is available outside the hotel which is nice. lots of beaches around, with the closest being about a 3min walk out of the hotel. we like the Lefranc beach the best, which is about a 25min walk (younger legs) along the coastal path.

Enjoyed our stay immensely. Was so sad to leave, but cant wait to return. Not alone with this either as many people we met and spoke with along the way had been coming to the area, as well as the hotel for 10,20+ years. Its easy to see why.

Have thought long and hard re this review and agonized on its content and rating. We may have been unlucky, but certain issues totally spoiled this stay.

First of all the positives - we were lucky with the parking and didnt move the car all week. The check in procedure was easy and quick and the daytime front desk staff remained good throughout ( the evening staff were hopeless ).

Nicely appointed room , the hotel has a great position and we lucked out with a double balcony that unfortunately looked directly over the main dining area and because we were only on first floor the other views were restricted. The sound proofing in the room was excellent so we had no noise issues.

Housekeeping were absolutely brilliant - among the best , very quick , super clean and the laundry service was exceptional - best part of the hotel.

The main issues were with the food and service ...the hotel includes a 'fine dining experience' that basically seems to be their entire focus. Breakfast was served from the small and congested bar area ( product quality seemed high and an egg boiler was a nice touch ) ...the restricted layout , one single width toaster , a single coffee machine that regularly broke down was completely inadequate ...it caused long delays at peak times and it was quite obvious that the staff ( who tried very hard ) were also frustrated . Management seemed oblivious to the issues and totally failed to alleviate the issues.

Next is lunchtime - here there was effectively no real options other than a few left overs from breakfast in jars and a handful of bread options - BUT there was a fully functioning fine dining restaurant with a massive menu for fancy dining ( and most of the time less than 20% used ) . Basically they abandon those who are staying in the hotel for their chef inspired offerings. It would have been a simple option to have a limited menu for guests....as a result you were forced to navigate several flights of steep steps to walk to a supermarket or further afield to Callela.

The evening menu was also just the fine dining option with no option for simpler fare ( this was not a $$ issue rather than completely indicative of not attempting to cater for the hotel guests - further highlighted by the restaurant hijacking the tables and chairs in the outside terrace area meaning that guests often had nowhere to sit while staring at empty tables at the fine dining experience.

On the outside terrace bar service was basically awful with normally one person serving up to 40 people over 20 tables ! He would take an order, walk 30 yards back into the bar , walk back with someone elses drink as a single bar tender worked on the back log, Normally it would take 15 minutes as minimum to get a dribk, there were no table napkins provided so the tables were often awash.

The standard of drinks varied enormously , from good to terrible ...the same drink ordered the next day would be completely different and when watching the bartender he obviously had no real clue.

All the guests observed this debacle over a week and most decided to go elsewhere...one night in particular the drink orders were taking almost 30 minutes , yet 3 members of staff ( including 2 managers ) spent an hour moving around chairs and tables in the 'appropriated' fine dining part of the terrace oblivious to the lack of service - the phrease MOVING THE DECKCHAIRS ON THE TITANIC came to mind.

On night 2 we decided to try the dining and made a reservation for the first sitting. We arrived on time and were seated. The server did not provide menus or ask if we wanted a drink or water. After 15 minutes of inactivity our seat on the fringe of the empty restaurant was at the end of a ramp where non guests children were loudly playing and steering toys and other items under our table.

We found the server who said he couldn't do anything about it although at this point the 4 or 5 children were causing mayhem. At this poit , with no menu or drinks ordered we decided that this entire experience was so poor that we left and had to walk half a mile with many flights of stairs both ways to get a meal.

On the way out , the hotel receptionist ( who had made our reservation ) asked how our meal had been - we explained in detail and he seemed genuinely concerned , and actually asked who the server was - we told him and felt that we would receive some form of apology or explanation - TOTALLY wrong - we heard nothing ...no follow up...zippo..

This was really the final nail in the coffin ...the hotel is we think family owned and maybe operated ...maybe the managers are family members , but IF this hotel is going to survive they need to bring someone in who can both manage and mentor the staff and bring some service into the place.

We would probably have spent so many more $$$ if the bar / lunch / dinner had been more accessible and efficient ....we spoke to a lot of guests who had simialr experiences...

The lack of response from the hotel to our experience, the shambles at breakfast , the focus on fine dining to the cost of guests and the terrible bar service lets the Roc down...

We suggest to give a wide berth until it attempts to address these fundamental issues...

Room tip: Pick another hotel !

The reception was casual; no offer of help with luggage. The room was very pleasant but small. The bathroom was tired and grubby - mould around the bath and bath handles. The floor was old with worn and grubby terracotal tilesThe terrace was comfortable with an excellent view. Aircon worked well. Note there is no parking associated with the hotel. It is on-street and pot luck. Breakfast is OK but coffee machine is very slow, unpredictable and causes queues. The only hot option is a boiled egg. Terrace bar service for drinks was unfriendly and slow. Our first night dinner failed but, after a dispute, was not charged.

What a wonderful experience. A great choice. It is a third generation run hotel. Great helpful staff clean and neat. The outside patio area has spectacular views.Breakfast was lacking a little but the outside dining area and views made up for it.

Room tip: The higher you go the more expensive it gets.

We stayed here for six nights, the hotel is friendly, relaxed and in a stunning location. Calella de Palafrugell is an unspoilt small seaside town with lovely beaches all of which are walkable from the hotel. You can also walk along the coastal path to the lovely town of Llafranc or the other way to the botanical gardens at Cap Roig. We had booked with Expedia which I think means you get the only rooms in the hotel without a sea view but at a much cheaper rate. The rooms were immaculate however and cleaned every day and you still got the view at breakfast or any time you went to the bar. The staff in the hotel are excellent. There is no car park which means there is a bit of a fight for a space a peak times but it was never really an issue for us - we drove from the U.K.
