I have to agree with most of the reviews here - Hopewell Lodge really is an amazing place to stay. Both the lodge's location/facilities and the fantastic people that run it make for a truly relaxing and memorable stay. This was the last place I visited on a 5 week trip to NZ and it was lucky I didn't find it early on in the trip or else I wouldn't have left. I'm already dreaming about going back....

Wow, what a wonderful place to be! Make sure you spend at least 4 nights in this beautiful lodge! Mike, Lynley and their family built a paradise from scratch. The facilities are cleaner than everywhere we've been in NZ and the kitchen is very well equipped. For very moderate prices you can use a rowboat, grab a rod and bait and go out fishing! For me a treat, because I lost so many sinkers in NZ while fishing from ashore :o)
You can also rent kayaks and explore the sound on your own. Every couple of days there is a free mussel night! Yes, totally free! Its absolutely delicious to have greenlips fresh from the sea. They even serve fresh bread to it as well! And yes, you're more than welcome to grab a bucket and collect your own oysters and cockles from the beach.

We were lucky enough to spend xmas at Hopewell. For, again a very reasonable price, we got an awesome christmas dinner and enjoyed the company of all the guests and their family and friends.

BOOK WELL IN ADVANCE!!! We've booked months ahead, and when we tried to get a room for friends of us in early October, we got the last twin!!

Thanks again Lynley & Mike for your great hospitality, it was a wonderful stay and we enjoyed every minute of it!

This is my second visit to Hopewell. The previous stay was two years ago. The hosts - Lynley and Mike are still as friendly and helpful. Accommodation is still very well maintained.

This time we choose to drive there and are able explore the area near the accommodation. In comparison, I would prefer to park my car at Havelock and take a river taxi over. That will save a lot of driving hours and winding road.

There are plenty of oysters, clams and mussels for picking at the beach. There is a lemon tree in Hopewell. You can even eat the oysters on the spot ! Good to stay for at least two nights to do some kayaking, fishing or just lying at beach.

I love their home made pizza especially the Smoked Chicken pizza :)

Tip : (1) Book the cottage for kitchen facilities.
(2) Arrange for a Kenepuru Sound Cruise with Pelorus Tours for visit to mussel farm, scalloping and fishing. They can pick you from Hopewell for the tour.

Hopewell lodge was extremely relaxing. Upon arrival we were greeted by the hosts with complementary drinks and freshly baked cake before being given a full tour of the lodge. The kitchen was very modern and tidy was well equipped. The additional charges for kayaks and fishing gear etc is well worth the cost. Fishing was good right out in front of the lodge - we caught snapper, kahawai and a few other species. The hosts also put on a big complimentary communal mussel cookup. The drive by car is rather long - but worth the reward of the isolated and peaceful location. Definately recommend it and will be going back.

It feels like coming home when you arrive at Hopewell. The owners with crew offer everything one need, relaxation (chilling in the spa pool looking over Kenepuru Sound or homemade pizzas, bread together with a cappuccino in the morning) and/or adventure (kayaking, fishing, trekking, biking, golfing etc). Our family had a very nice experience and can only say that we will come back in the future! :)
