“Amazing and just what I wanted”
Reviewed January 28, 2012

If you're looking for a vacation that has a beautiful natural location, no pressing agendas and comfortable accomodations, this is for you. All I wanted to do was relax, do a little snorkeling, have everything taken care of for me, food, snacks, travel arrangements, and that exactly what I got. This vacation was worth every penny.

Room Tip: This is easy. Do you want air conditioning or not? All of the rooms are lovely and cared fr everyd...

Kudo's to Raf and Reiko. Bunaken Cha Cha, stunningly set along a stretch of beach on the island it is named after, is more than an incredible small dive resort. We stayed for 11 days and could easily have spent another two weeks snorkeling, relaxing, enjoying the company of Raf and Reiko, the guests who hailed from all parts of the world, and the delightful and well trained staff who made us feel at home.

We will be back! The guests were a mix of "first timers" to "fifth timers" but for many this was a return visit.

Some will say there is little to do at Cha Cha but dive. While we are not divers we went out on the dive boat almost every morning because we enjoyed the company of our fellow guests and wanted snorkel the diverse and stunning sites within easy boating distance of the resort.

During the afternoons we sat on the beach and read, played an amazing array of games with a beautiful 10 year old and assorted charming teenagers who were with their parents.

We walked to the little village 15 minutes from Cha Cha to see the new library and to see what small village is like. We read, slept, relaxed, looked up the fish and coral we had seen the Cha Cha library books. The communal dining area gave us the opportunity to get to know our fellow guests. We became "auntie and uncle" to little ones and we felt like we had arrived at a lovely party on an island paradise that went on for days. No disco music blaring in the evening - or anytime. No TV - no "constant noise of modern life". If you want internet it is available in your room for a price much less than the big hotel chains charge these days.

The food was amazingly good and varied. Raf and Reiko could always be counted on to be chatting and dining with their guests. The balcony of the dining room was perfect for sitting and looking out at the sea during tea time, before breakfast, after dinner or any other time. One evening every guest from 10 to 72 was sitting in a circle just enjoying each other's company. The small sandy beach, complete with beach chairs and towels, was great to take a shallow swim or to play with kids building sand castles or just watching them cavort in the water. We spent many afternoons in our favorite chairs right at the shore under a big tree, reading, and talking. We were barefoot most of the time!

We barely saw a mosquito or any other bug. We chose Bunaken to snorkel and it was one of the highlights of our trip. It was truly the best snorkeling we've done anywhere in the world. The coral is pristine with so many species you couldn't count them all. Fish, too!!

The ratings on Trip Advisor do not do justice to Bunaken Cha Cha. It is more than the sum of value, location, sleep quality, rooms, cleanliness and service. Our room was spacious and designed to please. It was always spotlessly clean. We loved out ourdoor shower in spite of an occastional leaf falling in during a rainstorm.

Each evening we went to sleep with the sound of the ocean and woke up to gentle lull as well. We can't wait to be "fifth timers!"

As previous reviewers have reported, this is an extremely comfortable resort on a beautiful island, with fantastic food, lovely cottages and a unique atmosphere.

We spent just under a week there recently and would highly recommend it for singles, couples or families whether you are snorkellers or divers. The reefs in the area are in pristine condition in beautiful clear water with a staggering variety of hard and soft coral, wonderful fish life and very many large friendly turtles. We did two dives most days with Yuko and felt extremely safe and well looked after by her and the boat crew. There was virtually no current during our dives, which was a bonus.

The cottages are extremely well appointed with beds much more comfortable than the rock hard "beds" so common in other parts of Asia. The beautiful outdoor bathrooms are perfect for the climate and come very well stocked with hair conditioner and body lotion. We heard the tarsiers at night but did not manage to see them.

Raf and Reiko are the most charming and welcoming hosts imaginable. We love eating family style on our trips and greatly enjoyed the comraderie at mealtimes, as well as the excellent food.

We stayed 6 nights, which I would consider to be the absolute minimum stay for divers coming from Europe, as it is a very long way away. The resort is so lovely and the diving is so good that a few extra days would have been better.

Hope to re-visit before too long !

A coordinated trip by taxi and boat to Bunaken Island, all organised by Raf and Reiko, the owners of Bunaken ChaCha, brings you to the north shore of the Island. This small resort offers a charming and inviting environment. Our bungalow was with AC, very clean and with an open bathroom and hot water. The meals offered are outstanding in quality and variation and is served by a friendly and attentative staff. It is like staying with a family. The diving grounds in front of the Resort and those visited by boat shows the whole variety of sealife in this region. Raf and Reiko are active in projects to help the area mastering the litter problem. An ideal place for relaxing.

Chacha is a lovely resort located in the Bunaken Island. It is quiet and exclusive with no other resorts nearby. If you are a party animal, then I won’t recommend to go there. However, if you want to enjoy a relaxed holiday, it will be a perfect choice. Their deluxe chalets were all well decorated and the showroom was specially open-air design. Their service was good but not perfect. It is probably good enough for you to accept. Just one remainder, their wifi service was not free and will charge you US$10 per day per computer, while other resorts were normally with no charge.
I spent 7D6N over there and dived with their guide. The diving was fantastic with crystal clear visibility. It was an excellent location for wall and drift dive. However, if you are a beginner, you may sometimes feel uncomfortable about the current. But Chacha was offering more a relaxed diving style, so they would only take you to those easy ones. Overall, it is a good resort and I have no doubt to recommend you.

Room Tip: Chalet 1-4 are all good, which are close to the beach.

Dear Felix
Thank you for reviewing our Resort and so glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay, it was unfortunate that my wife and I were not here during your stay (small vacation for us too) but happy to hear that over all our staff made your stay comfortable. Regarding the Wifi, you are correct in assuming that in this day and age wifi should be FOC but unfortunately being on an island has its limitations and we are forced to use one provider at a cost of $600.00 per month, a cost that, at least in part, we need to recover from our guests, as I am sure you will appreciate. Those on the island that do not charge use a different system that is extremely slow and basically unusable if you are used to "normal" internet connection speed.
I hope that we will have the opportunity to see you again at Cha Cha in the near future and once again thank you for taking the time to write the review.
Kind Regards
Raphael Downey

We stayed at the Cha Cha for almost a week.
During these days we really had a great time!
The diving guides Yuko and Sam showed us the wonderful underwater world of the Bunaken Natural Park. Sometimes the currents were a little strong for me as a beginner. But still it was an unforgettable!
The owners of the resort - Raf and Reiko - are very nice and funny people. Raf helped us a lot - like organizing tickets for our way to Makassar. Since, we had our flight back from Manado Raf offered us to leave our diving equipment for one week at the resort.
Thanks again for the wonderful time!
We're looking forward to come back!

If you love nature and want to get away from it all, Cha Cha's on Bunaken Island is the place for you. Best coral reefs we've seen, including Hawaii and Belize, outstanding marine life diversity. Owners and staff are very responsive to your needs and the small size of the resort, plus the fact that everyone shares meals in the dining hall, means that your experience is highly personalized. Rooms are simple but beautiful and spacious. Meals are very good with both Asian and Western cuisine.

Room Tip: All rooms have ocean views but the higher rooms have lots of steps
