“Very friendly diving resort”

The fully renovated bungalows are great, have both a fan & air-conditionning. The partly open-air bathroom has hot (real hot) shower.

The restaurant -not that much a bat-cave- provides a good variety of food, including corn flakes & real milk for breakfast, and soups, fish & meat as well as excellent vegetables for lunch and dinner. A light afternoon snack is also included in the full board.

The diving is just great, the equipment was brand new when we stayed (and you do not need to worry about it: all your gear is kept in a box - carry to and from the boat by the staff).

Service is excellent. Laundry is free. Management is taking great care of the guests' comfort (it is nearly the only place where someone did actually care about our well-being). Thanks to Benny (manager) for all this!

I chose Froggies after the first reply to my enquire, when I was still in Lisbon. The answer was thorough, to the point and still transmitted a kind of enthusiasm that gave me the feeling this was the place to go. The experience did not let me down. Benny (the manager) goes out of his way to help you in any thing you need, either it’s getting information for you to choose your next destination, or helping you coordinate the transfer with your next diving center.

The dive guides have hawk’s eyes, and after the dive they meet you in the lounge area of the resort and go over all the pictures and pointing the specimens in the books, so you can get all the info you need to complete your log book.

More details and photos of my stay can be found at http://lifesauntering.blogspot.com/2010/09/bye-bye-froggies.html

stayed here in may 2010, they are in full renovation, noise of construction work, messy, not a paradise atmosphere at the moment...
Rooms are finished allready, nice rooms, views, clean, wifi in the rooms.
Restaurant, no good at all, food very basic, very simple. Dive boats need to be updated or replaced. Diveguides are ok, find a lot of stuff !
So for now i will not recommend it, wait after the renovation! I think it will take an other 4 months.

In the near future it can be nice, the planning looks ok, the restaurant will be built on new location with great view / terrace and a new kitchen ( building this right now ). new diveshop / reception. There is already 1 new dive boat, looks very good, personally didn't go out on this boat. Planning is for more new boats.

Froggies focus on serious divers. The very friendly manager, Benny, took over from Christiane with panache in May 2009 and is now Froggies GO (Gentil Organisateur in ClubMed jargon). The staff is absolutely friendly, and rooms have a nice balcony overlooking the sea. Don't expect luxurious rooms as the main occupation here is to do serious diving and talk about it, Not To Waste Precious Diving Time in Bed!

As a diver and travel lover I was so disappointed by my time at Froggies. The resort is situated on a dirty stretch of beach, rubbish is washed up from Manado and when the rains hit the sand is coated in debris. There is a concrete sea barrier which makes the beach even less appealing to visitors.

The diving instructors admitted that they require more training and sadly myself and my husband discovered that our dive guide was only trained to Advanced Open Water level by PADI! This is terrible considering the currents in Bunaken are strong and varied - professional dive guides are a must here. We paid good money for our dives and expected our guides to be trained to higher standards - be warned! No proper dive briefings were given.

The resort is under new management and is extremely over priced. The meals were really poor, considering the abundance of food available in the supermarkets just a short boat ride away in Manado. Over cooked white rice begins to get boring after a few meals!

Apparently the island is cleaner the other side and resorts offer better value for money.
Apart from that..the rooms are quite nice, good views over the sea but in our opinion it is not worth the prices charged per person per night.

We stayed with Froggies for ten days and enjoyed it thoroughly. Although the bungalows are a bit spartan (no airco, no shower but only water from a container to wash yourself with), the staff is so friendly, you feel at home immediately.
Because of the small size, everybody (staff and other guests) know your name immediately. You feel like you are part of a small Indonesian/European community.
Although the food is not spectacular, it is decent and with enough choice and variation to satisfy most people.

The diving is very good. We got our own personal dive guide that accompanied us on our 30 dives in 10 days.

We spent 4 days on the live-aboard the Sanny that is operated by Froggies. During this period we could keep our bungalow for free so we could store unneeded luggage. The Sanny is in dire need for some paint and small repairs, but overall our stay on it was also very pleasant (with air conditioning and real showers).

  • Liked — The friendly staff and the diving
  • Disliked — The lack of airco and shower

Froggies April 29 – May 4, 2005

It is more than a year ago since we left for Manado and I just never found the time to write this report. Haunted by my bad conscience, I finally sat down to do so.

Jacques, my partner has found Froggies in the internet and after having bombarded poor Christiane with my millions of questions (which she always answered in a kind way with lot’s of patience), we reserved two weeks at Froggies in the Morish Idol bungalow.

Pick-up at Manado airport was perfect and the transfer from Manado harbour to Bunaken Island was already quite an experience. Christine and her crew took over and our holidays started.
Out bungalow was simple but comfortable and we had a super balcony with view over the trees and the sea. No need for air-con – the ventilator was quite sufficient. Our open-air bathroom with the traditional Indonesian bathtub was a good reason to splash around and behave like kids.

Lunch and dinner buffets have enough choice, simple, traditional and very tasty food, always freshly prepared. Christine made us taste many types of fruit we did not know.

And the diving !? Well, just extra! Hence was our dive guide and we shared a boat with another very nice German couple, Kirstin and Torsten with their guide, Vitro. A fantastic team with fantastic dives in a still unspoiled underwater world. We had long, slow dives, just how we like it. No stress at all ! We even saw the tiny, white ‘Pontoh’ hippo! Very exciting!

After every dive, the two guides sat down with us to discuss what we had seen. We never felt that we bothered them with all our questions. Both of them are very experienced, patient and trustworthy guides.

Nevertheless, we decided (or better myself – Jacques just agreed after a while!) to only stay one week as I was missing one thing – a comfortable sun chair where I can just relax, read a book or sleep. There are two or three sun beds placed just before you enter the main lounge at Froggies but you feel a bit ‘exposed’ and at the beach all the boats are parked. Would be nice to have one sun bed on the balcony or why not a hammock ?

Anyway, Christiane was so kind to accept our changes and perfectly organised a 3-day ‘adventure’ tour through North Sulawesi for us with our own guide. We stayed one night at the Gardenia Country Inn, Tomohon – a beautiful garden with wooden bungalows – a must if you head towards the mountains. I never regret having spent 3 days travelling through North Sulawesi. There is so much to see: climb to the rim of a steaming volcano, experience the rainforest at dawn to search for the tiny tarsier (Tangkoko Nature reserve), see how clove, cocoa, rice, peanuts etc. are growing, experience a ‘real’ weekly market in a small town (fish, meat, fruit, vegetables)… on a rainy day ! All in all , an unforgettable experience !

We continued to spend another week at Gangga Island Resort but this is another story. I can only say that we did regret Froggies after all !

I will close this report now as I could go on for another few pages. Myself and Jacques would like to thank Christiane for the fabulous stay we had at Froggies. You can be proud of your team, be it dive guides, kitchen or service staff. Staying at Froggies made us forget our daily worries, let go and enjoy every day, … and realise how little one needs to be happy! We will return one day – please keep it the way it is !

Froggies Divers is a small dive resorts and eco-friendly PADI operation on Bunaken and Lembeh Island. We try to make it a home away from home and many of our guests also become friends. Our main concern is to offer a very personal service and exceptional diving. The groups are small, no more than 4 guests per guide . We take good care not only of our divers but also of preserving marine life. All our boats are equipped with Oxygen, First Aid and safety standard procedure. With the help of our experienced crew and our Indonesian English speaking dive guides we try to make the operation run as smoothly as possible. In order to show you all the riches of our underwater world we choose long, slow and relaxed dives; no need to go very deep, most of the beauties are well above the 30m, and we like to take long long safety stops, while admiring the upper part of the reef. Your dive time is limited by your air consumption, you will be underwater for at least from 60 - 75 minutes on most of your dives. ... more   less
